Series 10 stuff, you're welcome:

> Next teaser will broadcast during Comic Relief (Friday 24th March). It'll be a short clip from episode one starring Capaldi and Lucas, with a brief shot of Mackie at the end

> Saturday 1st April will see the entire list of episode titles revealed (and there'll be a Twitter meltdown because it's April Fools and nobody's quite sure if they're real or not, mainly because a couple of titles are just plain weird).

> BBC idents (akin to the one below) will then start to air throughout April, leading up to the premiere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN1Vn_43eyk
>>
>>80105926
6 didn't need redeeming, he was great on TV as he was. All Big Finish did was calm him down a bit.

>>80105031
Neither is the metacrisis Doctor. I'm looking forward to Kris Marshall's Doctor going on missions for the Time Lords again in exchange for a new regeneration cycle. The whole "13 lives" thing has real story potential and I hope it isn't squandered.
>>
>>80106078
I doubt he'll be doing shit for the Time Lords after Hell Bent.

More likely we'll get Rogue Rassilon hunting down the Doctor for sweet Revenge of Rassilon
>>
>>80106207
The best thing about Hell Bent is that we should be able to get multiple not necessarily evil (but sometimes evil) rogue Time Lords again instead of just the Master over and over.

I'm sure Drax found himself a nice safe job to ride out the Time War, until he managed to get in a bit of trouble with certain members of the castellan's squad, and now that they're out of their hot pocket he'll be finding himself a few odd jobs around the universe until the heat dies down.

But, better than that, now they can invent new ones and actually show them to us instead of just talking about them like the Corsair.
>>
>>80105964
Bullshit. We'll have a proper trailer before 24th March.
>>
>>80106472
They may release a re-cut version of "I'm Bill, I serve chips" but as for a different one, no.
>>
>>80106468
>But, better than that, now they can invent new ones and actually show them to us instead of just talking about them like the Corsair.

Tbf, they could've done that pre-Hell Bent, and even at any point since 2005 if they'd really wanted to. Especially after they introduced the fobwatch.
>>
>>80105423
>Another one
>What does it mean
>What's the mad fool talking about now

Clearly most of them had no clue what he was writing and only figured it out when other Time Lords who spoke English told them, or after someone used a translation matrix.
>>
>>80106557
If the BBC don't release the official trailer this month then they should slap themselves because their marketing for series 10 has been horrific so far. People will forget the show is even coming out.
>>
>>80106844
i imagine it'd take months to blast gallifreyan circle text into walls but it'd be hilarious if he did
>>
>>80106557
Source? or GTFO!
>>
>>80106937
Horrific? Nah. They gave us a specially-shot trailer, which is better than 2015 at least. The trailer and marketing will go into overdrive during April
>>
>>80105558
I liked the 'shock value' of 11's sudden change to 12. Just seemed perfect at the time, and Clala's stunned reaction.

Will Moffat or Chibnall (or both) write 12's regeneration? Moffat the goodbye, Chibnall the hello to 13?
>>
>>80106611
But using the fobwatch again would have been pretty cheap; now they don't need any extra plot device.

Similarly, while they certainly could have explained why a Time Lord either deliberately fled the War or somehow couldn't get back, now they don't need any such explanation.

For example, imagine someone like Rodan from Deadly Assassin, who was inspired by the Doctor and bored of being a Time Lady and considering going off to explore the universe and right the wrongs that the Time Lords ignored, but then the War happened, so she stayed behind to do her duty managing the transduction barriers, and now she's finally free.

Now take that same story and add an explanation for why she left her post on Gallifrey and hid out as a human, without changing her character. It's not impossible, but it's a lot harder, and it takes time and focus away from just introducing the character as someone interesting.
>>
>>80106972
Moffat has said in an interview that he'll work/chat to Chibnall and find out where he wants him to 'park the TARDIS'. So I imagine, like End of Time, Moffat will write up til the moment 12 regenerates (his last lines plus "VFX: Regeneration") then let Chibnall take the last scene/s
>>
>>80106966
People want to see FOOTAGE as in actual series footage. That is what gets the attention of the masses. The series starts literally two weeks into April, series 9 had great marketing via two very well edited cinematic trailers released months before series 9 aired.
>>
Chibnall will bring back multiple Time Lords and invent a tone of new ones I guarantee it.
>>
>>80107031
They'll get a clip during Comic Relief. Who knows, maybe they'll re-air a re-cut "I serve chips" trailer too along with it. Comic Relief will be seen by at least 6 or 7 million, so it's all good. Then they ramp up the marketing for 2 weeks.
>>
>>80107063
Let's pray he doesn't bring back any. Focus on making new ones, invent new mythology and stuff rather than boringly bringing back Rodan or some shit.
>>
>>80107031
>People want to see
S9, they give us edited-together actual footage, and fans complain that there's no specially-shot trailer like there was for S8.

S10, they give us a specially-shot trailer, and fans complain there's no actual footage.

Gosh, it's almost like different people want to see different things.
>>
>>80107031
>series 9 had great marketing via two very well edited cinematic trailers released months before series 9 aired

Which tended to air on BBC1 in the UK at 10 and 11pm at night, and which ended with the Doctor saying "same old same old". The marketing for S9 was shit.

S10's already way better, with a much more accessible trailer plus the fun specially-recorded clip.
>>
>>80107133
Proper footage filled trailers are always better than those cringe filled specially shot trailers.
>>
>>80107187
I dunno. I'd say the 11th Doctor & Amy in the vortex one is a lot more memorable than the actual Series 5 Coming Soon trailer.
>>
>>80107123
>Let's pray he doesn't bring back any.
Other than Romana or the Rani, and maybe Borusa, none of the classic-series Time Lords had enough details about them to constrain any stories they wanted to tell. It would make no difference to the story whether some young Time Lady inspired by the Doctor were named Rodan or Namla, except maybe for one line of dialogue in her first episode, so I honestly don't care either way. If calling her Rodan would make a few nerds squee, go for it. If it would make other fans groan, don't do it. Or just flip a coin. Whatever.
>>
>>80107187
Yes, you obviously speak for all of The People, so the anon directly above you is not a person, nor is the one directly below you. There's no way it could be possible that different people have different opinions so appealing to you while ignoring everyone else might not be a good marketing strategy.
>>
>>80107220
The Rani has potential, but only because of the amoral scientist angle. Even then, they could just break free from old shit and invent a new character with that angle, start over, and make it feel fresh.

I'm not bothered about Romana, Susan, the Monk, any of the old -- except maybe Rassilon, but even he was ruined in nuWho.

Omega and Rassilon are two I'd keep, but I'd ditch the rest and leave them to BF.
>>
>>80107220
>Namla
By the way, my first two attempts at mashing random keys before this one turned out to be names with pages at the TARDIS Data Core. That's just a coincidence, and there really aren't that many names already used, right?

The Monk still baffles me, in the sense that we don't know his true name/moniker. He was only a Monk cos in his first story he was hiding out in a Monastery. And it just stuck ever since. I don't trust nuWho. They'd have Gatiss write an origins story for him, revealing his name and botching the concept behind him.
>>
>>80107289
>The Rani has potential, but only because of the amoral scientist angle.
But the Rani is a shit character in her 2-1/2 appearances, and all the attempts to redeem her in novels and audios and comics failed, except maybe her cameo in that one Iris Wildthyme story. There's just too much baggage, so for her, I do actually care whether it's the Rani or a new amoral scientist character.

But again, other than Borusa and Romanaā€”and the Monk, who I forgot because I'm stupid, so thanksā€”I don't think anyone else has that much baggage. (And for the latter two, it's mostly good baggage.)
>>

>The Monk still baffles me, in the sense that we don't know his true name/moniker
He only appeared in 1-1/8 stories ever, so why should we have ever learned more about him.

Unless you follow the non-TV stories, in which case we actually do know his entire history, including even his real name.

Or you believe he's the first incarnation of the War Chief and/or the Master, in which case, again, we know a lot more.
>>

I'm intrigued. What name have the spin-offs given him? I bet it'll be lame.
>>
>>80107443
>they could just break free from old shit
Yes, I think we're agreeing on that. The only difference (if any) is that I think the Rani is kind of special among Classic Who Time Lords in not being just a name attached to a blank slate so it doesn't matter either way.

>I'm intrigued. What name have the spin-offs given him?
Mortimus.

According to Gary Russell's novels, that's his real name. A couple of later novels imply that it may have just been his college nickname, like "Theta Sigma" for the Doctor, and we don't know his real name, but that doesn't make it much better.

Meanwhile, he was called The Monk before his first TV appearance, but they're not consistent on whether it was a nickname he tried to force for himself, or something the Doctor and the Master called him as an insulting nickname.

>I bet it'll be lame.
And you didn't even know Gary Russell was the one who named him, so bonus points. :)

Yes, a west-country Englishman who grew up in Hong Kong and has no Irish ancestry will be the first Irish Doctor. I hope he can do a really good 1960s comedy Oirish accent and talk about leprechauns.

Mortimus the Monk. I can see why they went for it but eeeeesh. Mind you, Time Lord names are tricky. They either end up being stupidly lame ("Damon" in the 5th Doctor era) or hilariously wanky and naff sci-fi.

It would kind of be a waste to make the OTT-batshit-crazy character and the amoral-scientist character the same person.

Not that I think the Master always has to be OTT-batshit-crazy, even if Gomez does it much better than Simm, but that doesn't mean he should turn into the Rani instead.

But the point is, the idea that "he's amoral and only out for shits and giggles" is true for a grand total of one story, the first of his two.

The last prequel novel, where he's trying to do good but gets manipulated and foiled and decides fuck it, I don't care anymore, that's also a logical progression, not inconsistent characterisation. (It happens to be a crap story, but that's not why it's a crap storyā€¦)

>Tennant's box set highlights Russell's memorable, well-rounded characters. Smith's tries to distract you with some shitty villain FX.
Tennant was on a soap opera, and burned through a new companion every year. Smith was on Doctor Who, a show about aliens and monsters rather than council flat home life, and he kept Amy and Rory as long as most classic companions (and kept around River from the Tennant era instead of inventing a new one), so there aren't enough interchangeable girls to fill all the boxes.

If you watch the Husbands of River song Capaldi shows his subtle acting mastery. When he's gliding towards river when shes viewing the singing towers his facial expressions mimic tennants. It's almost sort of like the tenth doctor is showing through 12 as he knows whats about to happen to river by ''happen'' I mean 24 years. Capaldi subtly has done this numerous times throughout his run and many do not notice him echoing past incarnations.

Whoever put this togetherā€¦ have they ever actually watched an episode of Doctor Who?

Cybermen: So wanting to kill all humans and take their resources because they ran out is hard to find fault with and arguably better than the Doctor?

Ice Warriors: Their planet is dying, so they decide to kill everyone on Earth and terraform the planet into a new Mars. Just like the Zygons or the Silents, but more genocidey.

Silents: What misdeeds done to them by humanity are they retaliating against? They've conquered Earth because they need Earth tech to advance faster so they can use it for selfish reasons.

Davros: So "obeying your nature" as an evil genius is better than being just evil?

The Master actually does kind of fit his description, alone among all of them, but that just shows how stupid this scheme is.

Zygons: In an even worse situation than the Ice Warriors, and their solution is basically the same as the Silents' but less extreme. And that's "just evil"?
>>
>>80116574
Different in each story, but here are some examples:

* They've run out of resources, so they want to kill humanity and steal theirs.

* Jealous of humanity and want to destroy them.

* Lost the ability to reproduce and want to forcibly turn others into their progeny.

* Chased a planet made of gold halfway across the galaxy to destroy it because they were afraid someone might use it as a threat to their galactic domination.
>>
>>80116954
Or you could go back to the core story that Kit Pedler was always trying to tell: Obsession with progress leads to dehumanization and therefore to evil. They're a warning that we're exactly like the Mondasians, we just haven't gone as far as them yet.
>>
>>80117068
This guy gets it.
>>
>>80116301

>>
I'd love to see Mondas/spare parts properly adapted for Capaldi. Hopefully it's the finale. Mondas is supposed to look like 1950's Earth with High tech, so basically Fallout.
>>
>>80116301
When I was at a con that Tennant was at, he charged $50 for autographs at the table, but he gave out free autographs to people who happened to run into him outside the con and approached him politely. I think the $50 thing is as much about making sure the line doesn't run around the entire convention center as about being greedy, but then I haven't asked any niche-famous stars or their publicists, so I could be wrong.
>>
>>80118015
>Mondas is supposed to look like 1950's Earth with High tech, so basically Fallout.

One of the things that inspired him was seeing Castro brag about Cuba's GNP growth outpacing all of the capitalist nations, and his reaction was: Why is Castro talking about GNP? I thought his revolution was supposed to be about freeing the workers, not about using them more efficiently?

Which is basically the same thing that inspired the Greens to go in a similar direction a decade later, but I don't think he ever identified with them.
>>
>>80120114
That's opens up more avenues for Cybermen stories, even in this modernized world. Even though we might be much less afraid of technology now, we still have to grapple with the ethics of it today, and have just as much trouble as before. Even if we were in a fully transhumanist world, that makes Cybermen stories still relevant.
>>
>>80120443
I like the transhuman Cybermen idea.

But what about something in between, a world a little more advanced than ours that's on the cusp of transhumanism? (Although I guess that's really no different than what Pedler and Davis wanted to do, but in the 60s nobody had thought much about transhumanism yet, and cyborgs really wasn't a bad guess.)
>>
>>80118679
I can confirm that I was at a convention where John Lesson was offering either free or very cheap autographs for all attendees and the line was absolutely gigantic, much bigger than anybody elses
>>
Colin Baker's autographs cost $50 a piece. The same as Jenna Coleman and John Barrowman's.

>>80118679
I once saw Walter Koenig get in trouble at a Star Trek convention for doing the same thing you saw Tennant do.

Apparently, some fan complained that he had to pay $20 for an autograph so it's not fair that other people got them for free. Walter told them they should have just explained that $20 gets you a 100% chance of an autograph even if you're an asshole, while $0 gets you a 1% chance of an autograph only if you're not an asshole and get lucky, and they should have explained this to the asshole. He also told them that anyone who thinks his $20 should mean someone else doesn't get an autograph doesn't understand Star Trek and probably shouldn't be at their convention. Thy apologized to him, but then told him not to sign any more autographs in the parking lot or within sight of the convention center.

In other words, Doctor Who fandom isn't always the worst fandom in the world.

Is capaldi regenerating in season 10 or Christmas?
>>
>>80122470
I know Matt Lucas says he's non-human, but Moffat described him as "River's nice but dim human servant".

Are they retconning him to non-human or did Lucas just assume that anyone who looks like himself can't plausibly be human?
>>
>>80122874
Christmas 2017

>>80122882
I don't think his intended species was said in his first appearance, so they've just since decided he's not human
>>
>>80122944
>I don't think his intended species was said in his first appearance
Yeah, I think it's only in Moffat's off-camera statements about him coming back for the second Christmas special that he's called human, not anywhere on-camera, so they can definitely get away with it. (And even if they said it in-universe, it's not like they couldn't write around a minor retcon.)

But have they actually decided to make him non-human? The only thing I've seen is that one quote where Lucas says he's excited to play the first non-human companion on the new series, and that's almost the exact same thing Kylie Minogue and Alex Kingston said before him.
>>
>>80123064
The BBC Doctor Who site lists him as
>Species: Human. More or less.

Real helpful.
>>
>>80123064
>>80123167
I don't think they can make a huge shout about him being the first non-human regular, mainly cos he acts and talks and looks human. It's hardly anything new or weird or wonderful. Unless Series 10 really shows him as alien with a different culture and habits, he may as well just be human.
>>
>>80108762

i could actually see this happening

>>
>>80123212
Good point.

But maybe they could be thinking of shouting about it to fannish audiences but barely mentioning it at all in the mainstream press or on-camera?

After all, it's not like Turlough (who Matt Lucas mentioned) acted, talked, or looked that alien. He only mentioned being alien occasionally, and was treated more like a regular-guy companion than most of the past or future human companions ever were, except in his last episode. And similar for Nyssa and Adric, too. A lot of casual viewers in the 80s didn't even know any of them were aliens.

>He's non-human apparently.

Didn't Moffat say Nardole was "the key to all this", or something?

He might end up being a villain. But I definitely think he'll play a part in 12's regeneration. He might be the Wilfred Mott of the Capaldi era.

End of Time is objectively shit in terms of an actual story.

But if we remember that it's christmas, that people cared about Who back then, that Ten was like a national hero, it was GOAT.
Bringing back Master, Wilf, All the companions, young Rose.

And Vale Decem regeneration is just perfect for the RTD era.
It may not make any sense, but it's deeply emotional and touching, RTD did a great job hyping it up.

Back then, Doctor Who was more noticeably promoted in the UK. Billboards, TV appearances of all the cast, regular trailers etc etc.

The new UK Tory/LD alliance govt of 2010 limited the BBC's freedom to promote, for various reasons, but the main reason was that they believed a public service provider shouldn't be allowed to actively encourage viewers to watch their TV shows. This takes viewers, and hence advertising revenue, away from independent TV channels.

NEW THREAD

Today is a good day.

I think Pearl Mackie described Bill as having a big heart. If they make a point of her being really enamored with the universe then it sounds like good set up for a heartbreaking Cyber conversion. I don't think it'll happen though - I think Moffat would find that way too cynical for Doctor Who, unless she turned out to be basically CyberBrig.

A manipulative, Scientology-like cult masquerading as a mental health clinic conditions its clients into accepting and desiring conversion.
