I've uploaded some episodes of Police Story, a late 1970s anthology series that Michael Mann wrote four episodes of. The two-part River of Promises is Mann's best writing work for tv that I've seen (still need to watch his four Starsky and Hutch episodes).

Stalker
Breathless
Le Samourai
Seven Samurai
The Seventh Seal
>>
>>80100782
All masterpieces. Only Le Samourai is possibly a little overrated
>>
>>80100782
I actually nominate these. Stalker is a mediocre scifi flick, Breathless while revolutionary in jump cut technique, isn't a good film and didn't take much effort since all was done was break proper editing etiquette and use on-location shooting. It's more so an indie experiment that is recognizable but not really the first of its kind in story or other elements as Le Beau Serge and Little Fugitive preceded it. Le Samourai is pretty but more or less James Bond with French flavor and just a late accessible Melville effort. Seven Samurai is an adequate network narrative, but it's a very simple story with little in way of effort afforded by audience or creators. And the Seventh Seal is another simple accessible entry in Bergman's canon.

Really, it's just a lot of simple pseud arthouse that is overrated. Citizen Kane is not overrated because there are deep complexities and nuances in the verbose script with innovative uses of flashback and loose narrative structure with multiple narrators. Though, the low-angle shots are perhaps the most pseud cinematic technique.
>>
>>80100403
Movies that will never be overrated are Birth of a Nation or Intolerance. In fact, to this day even though they're taught, D.W. Griffith's entire canon seems entirely underrated because his ideas of using cinema's inherent features to tell a story with realism, peering through historical human relationships, and intercutting multiple narrative branches is unparalleled by his peers and lightyears ahead of his time and still ahead today.

>>
>>80102591
Because up until very recently, /tv/ (and by extension lbg) have always been built on people relentlessly signaling and countersignaling in an enormous game of metacontrarianism. This is no longer the case with /tv/ as a board because it has been taken over by redditors who unironically circlejerk over capeshit, GoT, and Dr. Who, but it is still very much the case for lbg, Letterboxd, Mubifags, and other groups of self-described "cinephiles"

When I say metacontrarianism this is best summed up by the vulgar auterism movement, which is basically comprised of people attempting to distinguish themselves from the masses by defending "unorthodox" directors and films as art ("unorthodox" should be read as "shit"). See: Paul WS Anderson, Tony Scott, Michael Mann, etc.

While any human being not caught up in a narcissistic status game would watch Miami Vice and rightly call it garbage, metacontrarians are so dependent on the uniqueness of their taste in film as social proof of their worth as human beings that they can watch Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx walk angstily around a club as a Linkin Park / Jay-Z mashup plays in the background and call it high art as long as someone thinks they're clever for doing so
>>
>>80103140

Acid is the more popular films, Amaranth is extremely niche, and Altarwise is general are house, but they all mix and match between the three and don't rate modern films poorly just because they're modern.
To break it down for why these three, Acid writes really good reviews, Amaranth is the Eastern Europe expert, and Altarwise watches the largest variety of films.

Genre Auteurism is the future of american film. These well crafted genre films should be praised because its likely the last bastion of real film making left. Once all the the auteurs die off and the new ones go broke we are going to be left in the cinematic dark ages. We are heading down a path where entertainment is the only measurable element of value. The academy is desperately trying to push dramatic films or Oscar bait to keep the hope alive that films can be more than entertainment but the films they are pushing are shit so the industry is digging itself deeper into the capeshit hole and basically forcing people into watching garbage.

Soon there will be no theaters. There will be no big name films. They will all look the same. "Movies" will just be clips or feature length trailers that satisfy only immediate superficial needs and they will be forgotten as soon as you watch them. Films in the future are just basically going to be glorified snapchats or periscopes that people watch on their built in netflix iPhone apps when they are sitting in a waiting room.

Is Letterboxd a good site to keep track of your viewing habits? I use a local one (Moviepilot), but it's pure vomit now.

I'm mostly interested in cataloguing movies along with an indication of how much I enjoyed them, and possibly getting sweet recommendations based on that. Not interested in writing reviews.

not auteurism, vulgar auterisim
“In reality, VA is a loosely affiliated group of young cinephiles and critics. In Sarrisite terms, it’s more concerned with Expressive Esoterica than the Pantheon; nearly every thinkpiece about VA has focused on Tony Scott and, for some reason, Michael Bay (who isn’t actually that big with the VA crowd), but the bulk of VA activity actually focuses on directors like Paul W.S. Anderson, Jon M. Chu, John Hyams, Nimrod Antal, Isaac Florentine, Roel Reine, the Farrelly brothers, Neveldine & Taylor, and Russell Mulcahy. VA is also interested in performance, especially when it’s applied to action stars.

VA has two missions. The first is to mount convincing arguments in favor of figures it sees at major but undervalued: John McTiernan, Abel Ferrara, Walter Hill, etc. The second, larger mission involves exploring and analyzing the directors listed in the above paragraph.

It’s true that VA is largely concerned with “American cinema,” though not with American directors (Anderson is British, Reine is Dutch, Antal is Hungarian, Florentine is Israeli, etc., etc.), American actors, or even with American-made films.

Rather, it’s concerned with how the great traditions of American cinema—the things we value about Hawks, Joseph H. Lewis, Anthony Mann, Budd Boetticher, and so on and so forth—have survived in present-day genre filmmaking. This is why John Carpenter is such an important VA figure: he represents a link between classical Hawksian style and the formalism of the great contemporary genre filmmakers."

Listen, sex doesnt matter to me. I dont care about sex. You know whats better than sex? using your mind.. then sex will come to you. I have mastered science at a very young age. Likely due to my atheism. When I was 7 my dad brought me to church and I said "dad this is stupid and fake" I was a natural born atheist. I didnt need 4chan to convince me. I'm smarter than everyone on this site. I learned that science is more important. I take college level science classes and im only 18. I am basically a genius for my age group. Because of my many sciences I have met many college girls while taking classes. They are impressed by my knowledge and usually take me to college parties. I dont drink so I usually go hangout and read a book. This one time a girl brought me up to a room to show me her bed or something? and we ended up having sex. I felt her vagina in all. So a movie to describe my sex life? The Conjuring. because I conjure up pussy all day long
>>
>>80102882
That's okay, but if you make a top 10(I'm assuming you're OP) you don't make it according to your personal taste or opinions. For example even when I prefer Barry Lyndon to Clockwork Orange or 2001 Space Odyssey I know the last two are more influential in the movie story and the way movies are done, the time it was made, the story behind it, the artistic merits of the movie itself.
What is entertainment for you can be boring for other, that's why you don't use something so subjective like that to judge a movie, especially if you're judging something so big like the asian cinema and don't post things like High and Low from Kurosawa and instead post MM REBELLION and fucking Haruhi.

>Chiron does not have any personality outside of being a victim

Chiron beats the fuck out of his class bully and becomes a successful drug dealer. You need to go watch Wong Kar-Wai flicks to understand that personalities don't need to be telegraphed with dialogue.
>>
>>80111103
Him becoming essentially Leon is not really his own personality. And him beating the bully isn't personality, it was reacting on emotion. I don't really see those as making him have lots of character personally, but I guess I could see the argument. Just didn't work for me
>>
>>80111228
Sorry, Juan not Leon lol. Thinking about Leon The Professional I guess

Allow me to introduce myself first, My name is Adam Cook, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are plebeian, boring, casuals who spend every second of their day talking about shitty superhero films. You are everything wrong with the site. Honestly, have any of you ever seen a French New Wave film? I mean, I guess it’s okay for fifth graders to have taste like this but you guys take it to a whole other level. This is even worse than playing Call of Duty all day.

Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much a true cinephile. I live in a booming city and work as a freelance writer. What do you do other than shitpost and talk about Hobbits? I also got straight A's at film school and have a banging hot blu-ray collection. You are all plebeians who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.
Pic Related: It’s me after finishing my In Bruges review. Go check it out, you might learn how to write.

At least 1,500 preferably evenly spread from every decade. Otherwise, you're not really relevant to speak.

A Man Escaped is amazing in so far that it's perfectly succinct, straight forward cinema. It literally does what it says on the tin and everything that happens exists just to keep the plot going.

Reminded me of Wilde's The Naked Prey. Anyone else know some more straight forward, no nonsense narrative films?

I'll check it out but I can't say I really like prison films that much. One thing I liked is that they kept the standard prison movie subplots and bullshit to a minimum in A Man Escaped. Is Le Trou similar in that regard or is it more of a great prison film that does the best version of all the usual genre conventions?
>>
