I've read up till book 4 (there are six now and a couple of short stories) and the first three are pretty damn good. Four has some issues with "No one is that lucky" but I'm told books 5 and 6 are much better.

They flesh things out a bit better I think and make some of the plot points in season one a bit clearer. The show though is pulling some of the plot from the later books up to tie everything a bit better together.
