I did the same thing. I never made it past that scene, I was way too spooked. Looking back, it really shouldn't be that scary. It's literally just a guy in makeup spooking another guy in broad daylight next to a busy restaurant, but something about the way lynch does this stuff just made it nightmarish and horrifying as fuck for no obvious reason. I have no idea how he does it.

A friend of mine dragged me to that in the theater and it made no fucking sense to me. "It was supposed to be a miniseries so lots of stuff got cut." Okay, I said. Mulholland Drive is the "lol you wouldn't understand it" film. It's intentionally incoherent and open ended but people ascribe interpretations on it and use that to glue the plot together.


I'm not saying they're wrong because interpretations are too subjective, but I didn't like the film at all. For example the diner scene in my mind was literally just in there so that Lynch could throw a "ooo so spooky" scene in. There's no reason for it to exist, even from the point of view of dreams because none of the characters in the diner scene are relevant to the rest of the movie.

Sure, you can like it just because of the visuals and atmosphere, but it's much more amazing when you finally realize what's happening. Don't look up analyses or you'll miss the fun of understanding it by yourself. Lynch had been wanting to make this for several years, so he had a lot of time to think of the details. Everytime you rewatch it you notice more stuff. It's very well-made.
