I did the same thing. I never made it past that scene, I was way too spooked. Looking back, it really shouldn't be that scary. It's literally just a guy in makeup spooking another guy in broad daylight next to a busy restaurant, but something about the way lynch does this stuff just made it nightmarish and horrifying as fuck for no obvious reason. I have no idea how he does it.

David Lynch is perhaps the only director who tells the audience that he's about to scare them, and still does it.
>>
A friend of mine dragged me to that in the theater and it made no fucking sense to me. "It was supposed to be a miniseries so lots of stuff got cut." Okay, I said. I nodded sagely and just pretended that somehow it made sense that bits and pieces of a television show could be cut up randomly into arthouse garbage and make it to the local cinema where grandma and children go to see disney movies. I just figured it was retarded garbage that Hollywood elites got to do at a certain point in their career and we, the flyover moo-cows were too dumb to get it.

So, am I retarded? Should I try to watch it again? It must be like 20 years old now.

tarantino is a hack, lynch is an auteur
>“In a way, what Tarantino has done with the French New Wave and with David Lynch is what Pat Boone did with rhythm and blues: He's found (ingeniously) a way to take what is ragged and distinctive and menacing about their work and homogenize it, churn it until it's smooth and cool and hygienic enough for mass consumption. Reservoir Dogs, for example, with its comically banal lunch chatter, creepily otiose code names, and intrusive soundtrack of campy pop from decades past, is a Lynch movie made commercial, i.e., fast, linear, and with what was idiosyncratically surreal now made fashionably (i.e., "hiply") surreal [...] D. Lynch is an exponentially better filmmaker than Q. Tarantino. For, unlike Tarantino, D. Lynch knows that an act of violence in an American film has, through repetition and desensitization, lost the ability to refer to anything but itself. A better way to put what I just tried to say: Quentin Tarantino is interested in watching somebody's ear getting cut off; David Lynch is interested in the ear.”

if anyone is really interested, here's a good analysis of the plot of mulholland drive.
http://www.mulholland-drive.net/analysis/analysis01.htm
>>
Mulholland Drive is the "lol you wouldn't understand it" film. It's intentionally incoherent and open ended but people ascribe interpretations on it and use that to glue the plot together.

I'm not saying they're wrong because interpretations are too subjective, but I didn't like the film at all. For example the diner scene in my mind was literally just in there so that Lynch could throw a "ooo so spooky" scene in. There's no reason for it to exist, even from the point of view of dreams because none of the characters in the diner scene are relevant to the rest of the movie.

The only things I remember about Mulholland Drive are that Robert Forster seemed like he was going to be an important character, and then we never see him again, and that Naomi Watts seemed much more believable when she was acting (in her audition) than when she was being herself.
>>
>>80053605
Each and every one of them is in regards to the basic overall plot of the film, which has a generally agreed upon interpretation among fans.
>>
>>80053657
It's hardly an interpretation. It's literally what happens in the film.
>>
>>80043341

The interpretation is clear. It's a movie about a girl who wants to become a successful actress in Hollywood. She fails though and does a bad thing to get revenge. The movie starts with her dreaming about how she wanted things to go; then she wakes up and we see how things actually went.

But who was claiming otherwise in the first place to prompt this complaint? Nobody ITT, or that I have ever seen, pretends they really do know the true meaning of every little detail of the film. So when you come in and start complaining about that, people are going to assume you're complaining about something that actually exists (i.e. people who do understand the basic plot and have their own explanations for other things).

Look:
>1) Dreams are mostly believed to be weird symbolic representations of your emotions, feelings, fears and wishes (conscious and subconscious), formed using random stimuli you've received in the real world (even some you don't remember) but putting them in other, maybe unrelated contexts (i.e. some dude you talked to in the subway can appear in your dream as a security guard, or as your teacher or neighbor, or as someone's human pet, etc etc, or as himself).
>2) The film is a psychological drama. A look into the protagonist's psyche.
With those 2 things in mind, go watch the film again, give it a little thought and it'll start to make sense. It's true that it leaves a lot scenes open for interpretation, but it does have a coherent plot. Most of the weird stuff has meaning and a reason to be there. They're not just random "dude surrealism lmao" crap.

Sure, you can like it just because of the visuals and atmosphere, but it's much more amazing when you finally realize what's happening. Don't look up analyses or you'll miss the fun of understanding it by yourself. Lynch had been wanting to make this for several years, so he had a lot of time to think of the details. Everytime you rewatch it you notice more stuff. It's very well-made.
>>
>>80054311
Oh off yourself.
>>
>>80042386
Yes, the film is not LGBT propaganda, it actually portrays lesbian relationships pretty realistic - abusive, pointless, out of vanity, and in the end they go back to sucking cock again.
>>
>>80055001
Well, you can look up analyses, but only once you already understood the bigger picture.
>>
>>80052732
Lesbianism is basically irrelevant. It's either ugly bulldykes fucking ugly but less dyky women or it's hot chicks pretending to be lesbian because a girl fingered them once or to automatically friendzone all their beta virtue signalling orbiters, while they still have sex with an Alpha cock every now and again. There's no such thing as a "hot lesbian" who hasn't had sex with half a hundred chads before she "realized" she is lesbian, and who will go back to chads eventually anyway.
