i cant stand anything after 9, i bought 10, 12 and the one with the girl which is 13 or 14. all garbage. i got a fair bit into X before getting really bored, 12 I got to that part where you're running around a city shouting about traitors or something and got bored. I don't even think I got past the first hour in the one with the woman, all the characters seemed like faggots and it felt like i'd missed a few hours of gameplay because it was referencing so much shit i had no idea what was happening. turns out there is a giant codex i have to read to even understand the fucking story.

People usually hates VIII but i honestly like it too even though i reckon it has tons of flaws and once you understand it you can actually break the difficulty.
But i like the whole story. People just don't get it because the narration is messed up but it's a really compelling plot. (Not shakespirean by any means now that i am not 13 anymore but still pretty good).

I tolerate X if only because of Auron and the ending alone i really put hours behind XII even though i didn't quite like it at first. I actually tried the zodiac version too later on and it does fix a lot of the problems i had with the game but damn... the pacing really pisses me off. 40 hours in and it still fells like nothing is happening.

What killed the franchise for me was when they started with all the direct sequels, prequels and shit... so X-2/ Advent children/ XIII-2/3. Games shouldn't overstay their welcome.

That's why i say the narration is at fault, not the story. Think about it from Ultimecia's point of view and all of it makes sense.

In her future SeeD has started a witch hunt to prevent Ultimecia from ever happening which means they have hunted her since childhood eventually creating her.

She then uses the Ellone machine created in Eastar and jumps back in time and ends up doing all the stuff that makes SeeD fear her in the first place.
You have to think that since she is using the Ellone machine she would know everything Rinoa, Edea and Adel. (That's how you would explain Griver)

The game shows you how Ellone works on Squall and friends and kind of expects you to tie it all together by yourself. The final scenes where Squall is lost in time is meant to somewhat show that is all a tragic time loop...

It is pretty cool but due to the narration is difficult to understand.

Why do people like these games so much? I've looked at the gameplay of some of them and a lot of it seems to be attacking an enemy by selecting an attack, waiting for them to hit back, and repeat.
That seems boring and slow paced as fuck.

Yes, I 100%'d it.

It's pretty good. A significant fucking step up from FFXIII but not as good as any of the classics. The combat is fun and engaging, the graphics are nice, the voice acting is good all around the board. The story leaves a lot to be desired but that's only because Squeenix thought it wise to spread it over fifteen different mediums (movie, anime, prequel game, etc).

Unfortunately, over 50% of the game's content is hunts and fetch quests, which can get repetitive pretty quick if you're not a fan of that open world RPG stigma.

It has a lot of charm, though. The soundtrack is decent and has the huge advantage of nabbing the best tracks from every previous FF and allowing you to listen to them in the car or eventually on foot. Chocobo riding/racing is better than it has ever been.

I'd recommend Redboxing it for a few days and seeing how you feel. I wasn't committed to paying full price for it (still wouldn't, $30 at the most) after renting for about three days but someone bought it for me as a birthday present a few weeks later so I gobbled it up.
