That's any film that was released as of 2007. I think the only better films are No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood. And explain why you think it's better. You can use my 2 films if you want. Please don't comment if you haven't seen Moonlight.

Calm down. Toni Erdmann, from the same year.

>>
>>80033542
I saw Toni Erdmann and really liked it. But comparing it to Moonlight is a stretch. Moonlight is more complex and inspiring in my opinion.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>80032873
After watching this for the third time, I really do feel like it's underrated, even after winning best picture in that shitshow.

The acting is completely incredible. I've never seen a film where the main character is played by different actors and it feels so much like the same person before.Even the other guy, you can see it's a different person playing them but for Little/Chiron/Black it's just incredible.

No way La La Land is better, just a musical.

Fair enough if you think Toni Erdmann is better, I'm not going to try and shit on it. Quality movie.

Ali's character return in the final act. also, i didn't buy Ali being Cuban-American for a second. he's more Bahamian, Barbadon, or Haitian. he had zero Cuban or Cuban American mannerisms.

I'm going to go through your list but first here are the ones I haven't seen and won't comment on:

Passengers, Moana, Dr. Strange, Ouija, Trolls, The Kings Choice, Miss Peregrine, Storks, Pete's Dragon, Girl will all the Gifts, Jason Bourne, Lights Out, Star Trek Beyond, Independence Day, Ice Age, Secret Life of Pets, Ninja Turtles, Warcraft, The Nice Guys, Train to Busan, X-Men, Captain America, Sniper, Sausage Party, 10 Cloverfield, The Last King, Yoga Hosers, Kung Fu Panda 3 and Standoff.

Okay so now I'm going to rate the films that I have seen out of 10. Moonlight is a 9.5.

Fantastic Beasts- 6/10
Hacksaw Ridge- 2/10
Arrival- 8.5/10
La La Land- 8/10
Kubo and the Two Strings- 8/10
Suicide Squad- 2/10
Ghostbusters- 4/10
The Purge- 3/10
Finding Dory- 7/10
The BFG- 6/10
The Neon Demon- 7/10
Hell or High Water- 8/10
The Conjuring 2- 2/10
The Jungle Book- 4/10
Batman v Superman- 3/10
Don't Breathe- 4/10
Zootopia- 8/10
Deadpool- 5/10
Manchester by the Sea- 8/10

And from that list, I will only talk about the 8 or higher ratings which are: Manchester by the sea, Arrival, Zootopia, Hell or High Water, Kubo and the 2 Strings and La La Land.

1) La La Land- It's good for a musical, but a musical cannot compare in complexity and thoughtfulness as Moonlight.

2) Kubo and the 2 Strings- Amazing animation, perfect family film but it's too simple to be better than Moonlight.

3) Hell or High Water- Entertaining, great performances from Pine and Bridges. Lacking in themes.

4) Zootopia- Best animation of the year, shit perhaps best animation of the last decade but sometimes its messages contradicted with each other.

5) Arrival- Amazing film. Didn't hit as close to home as Moonlight for me.

6) Manchester by the Sea- Same reasoning as Arrival really.

I think you put some of these as a joke, such as The Purge and Ouija. You're also missing the 2nd best film of the year in Silence which I would rate a 9/10.
>>
>>80041253

>Hacksaw Ridge- 2/10
>Suicide Squad- 2/10
>The Conjuring 2- 2/10

Sure.
>>
I bet you I could probably name 50 films better than Moonlight since 2007
>>
>>80041380
I know everyone loves Hacksaw Ridge but I can't stand it. Every stupid "yah Murica" moment from this shitty dick sucking film. Suicide Squad and The Conjuring 2 are obvious 2/10s though.
>>
>>80040938
Okay, OP here. I've finally been convinced that there is one film better from the last decade. Tree of Life I think is slightly better than Moonlight. So it's the 2nd best film of the decade I guess!
>>
>>80041431

Even if you don't like the, you gotta admit HR and TC2, two generally well received movies, are on a whole different level than the mess known as Suicide Squad.
>>
>>80041590
Was The Conjuring 2 well received? I thought the critics would hate it, seemed like every other horror movie ever made. I know Hacksaw Ridge was positively reviewed and I would reluctantly say was better than Suicide Squad if only for the acting alone.

Not trolling, I'm being completely serious. However, I've realised that Moonlight is the 4th best film of the decade from this which may increase or decrease. Tree of Life, There Will be Blood and No Country for Old Men would be rated above Moonlight barely. I'm guessing that you didn't like the film then?

I've only skimmed through this thread, give me a reason moonlight was even a good film at all because I found it quite dull.
>main character doesn't experience the typical "heroes journey", or any sort of real journey in a sense
>learns nothing from his experiences, doesn't develop besides copying his pseudo dad
>has nothing interesting going for him(he's gay, he's not a musician, he doesn't write, paint, even do construction or something simple, he's simply "gay"
>hence the viewer has little reason to be interested in his struggle when he's not striving for anything
>>
>>80044476
For the whole film he's trying to hide his emotions from the world out of fear of being judged or being seen as feminine. He hasn't had a proper parent to teach him how to express himself and has been taught that being different is wrong and decides to bottle it up.

So he presents this persona to the world, one where he is cold, emotionless and strong (in his eyes) and this develops as he gets older. But he's still got his true identity which he ignores out of fear of being judged. The final scene shows that he wants to follow his true identity.

I think I liked it so much because I've gone through similar phases. Tell me if that made sense, sometimes I can't organise my thoughts coherently. By the way, his "pseudo dad" was a good influence.

No.

>main character doesn't experience the typical "heroes journey", or any sort of real journey in a sense

So every movie needs a conventional "hero's journey" that has been used millions of times in other movies in order to be good.

>learns nothing from his experiences, doesn't develop besides copying his pseudo dad

He understands and accepts his feelings for Kevin as a teenager, then gets rid of them as an adult. The change he goes through is that he becomes a macho drug dealer, just like Juan, and ends up becoming a product of his environment instead of deciding for himself who he should be. What he learns after getting beat up is that people don't accept him and he feels the need to have a tough appearance in order to survive, even though it ends up just being a front. He doesn't acknowledge his feelings again until the very end, when he meets with Kevin.

Also, why does every character need to "develop" in order for the movie to be good? Sometimes the point of the story is that the character doesn't develop and suffers the consequences because of it (i.e Inside Llewyn Davis)

>>has nothing interesting going for him(he's gay, he's not a musician, he doesn't write, paint, even do construction or something simple, he's simply "gay"

He becomes a drug dealer. Before that he was just a kid in high school who is still trying to figure out who he is, it isn't shocking that he isn't a painter or a musician yet.

>hence the viewer has little reason to be interested in his struggle when he's not striving for anything

Wrong, much of what Chiron goes through is relatable and is something that the audience can connect with. A lot of people understand what it's like to feel alienated from your peers for being different, to get picked on in high school, to have a rough patch with your mom, or to be young and feel like entering an occupation or assuming an identity or image simply because everyone else expects you to.

Haven't seen it yet, but if I to list films I have seen meeting your criteria which I particularly enjoyed:

Calvary
Castaway on the Moon
John Wick 1 & 2
Synecdoche, New York
The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Funny that doing this makes me realize how many recent films I've yet to see.

Watch more films, Moonlight is good but nothing special. The cinematography especially is shoddy compared to actual great movies. The acting in the first two acts is also poor from all the children and teen actors. Last act was great but it doesnt pull the movie as a whole up to the levels you say.

Hi my name is Sten Shekelstein and I work for Hollywood, here's next year's best film winner
>Twilight of Democracy
A young white woman's black husband (Idris Elba) is killed after being sent by the president on an illegal black ops raid in the middle east, leaving her distraught. At first she turns to drugs, casual sex and the like, before meeting a brave muslim woman who leads her back onto the right path, the two fall in love and get married. Then at the end the muslim is shot at the airport following the president's new law.

The film ends with African tribal children singing as white words appear on a black screen
>Muslim's death sparked a civil uprising
>Five years later white men were extinct
>Ten years later, hunger and war no longer existed
>Truly.. it was the twilight of Democracy
>...And the dawn of the promised age

It's not special to you, but it is to me. I don't give a shit about things like cinematography unless it's a Kubrick/Malick picture and I only care about acting if it's bad. Who cares about the technical shit? The film had substance and I believe will go down as a great movie in a decade or so. Also, you really shouldn't go around asserting your opinion as fact.

This so much. I can't believe it was even nominated. Laxton is a fucking hack and should go back Kevin Smith.

>Boy oh boy, check out this blurring out of every single shot to show how he separated from everyone else, why do I use it everywhere, where this even doesn't make any sense in terms of narrative and it's not even Chiron who is in the scene? Really, who cares. Just blur it out.

There are also so many weird and autistic shots in it. What comes to mind first that long one of rear window, where Kevin and Black driving from the dinner, you can't see shit but the fucking chairs and like a hand. Not only it's completely pointless but it doesn't repeat ever because then it just shot - reverse shot trough the entire conversation. The only thing that even remotely well done is lighting, which is again constrained by the fact that half of the shots are just blured out or just such simple sets that you need to be a retard to fuck it up.

when will this boring, black-and-white snoozefest meme die?
>>
>>80048688
This. I don't mean to offend you OP but if you think moonlight is anything more than an above average film you have a lot of growing up to do. Chiron barely had any personalitt beyond victimhood and all the child and teen actors were pretty bad except for the one that played Kevin in the second part. The third act was pretty good and is what makes this film better than the average but the shoddy camerawork and cinematography throughout was quite a shame. I give it a 7,3/10.
>>
>>80048857
His lack of personality is the point. He's created a pseudo cold personality because he knows that he won't be accepted. His real personality shows itself if you look hard enough, and comes out in the 3rd act. And someone's taste in film has nothing to do with maturity. We can't all like the same films.

>>80048688
It's pedestrian to some, to others it's good. As Sly and the Family Stone say 'different strokes for different folks'.

>>80048678
I loved Zootopia as did practically every critic. Does every critic have a shit taste in film then?
>>
>>80049003
>I loved Zootopia as did practically every critic. Does every critic have a shit taste in film then?
Not an argument. Disney shit gets a lot of undeserved praise by critics. Just look at all the marvel movies getting great reviews and frozen winning the oscar over the wind rises.
>>
>>80049124
Zootopia made the AFI's top 10 movies of 2016, while I probably wouldn't take it that far it still says something about its quality. No marvel movie gets that much praise. I do agree with Frozen being overrated though.
>>
>>80049286
>Zootopia made the AFI's top 10 movies of 2016
Your whole argument is based on appealing to authority. Everything about that movie was average. I can see why it was nominated for an oscar in it's category since there's not a lot to choose from but it shouldn't have won.
>>
Is Fences worth a watch?
>>
>>80049427
Okay, fair enough I was just trying to be objective. I've hated movies that critics have loved too like Hacksaw Ridge. But I'm not going to sit here and say that anyone who likes Hacksaw Ridge has a shit taste in film because movies produce different reactions to different people. That's why you saying that my taste in film is flawed because I liked Zootopia is an ignorant statement.

>>80049556
Definitely. Just be warned, it all takes place in pretty much the same location and is more like a play than a film. If you don't like plays, then it may not be for you.

The only impressive thing about this movie was the last 20 minutes where 50 Cent transitions back into his gawky teenage faggot self. Other than that, there's minimal depth or plot development and nothing actually happens at all.

This is entry level gaykino that plebs can gawk at and slap their hands together like trained seals for, despite the fact we've seen this same shit done better more than a decade ago by Brokeback Mountain.
