Honestly I do think that was the best series finale a show has ever had.

Although I do think Peggy finding love at the last minute was trite.

SFU had a very satisfying ending, it was just right for the type of show it had.

Mad Men's finale hit he hard dramatically.

mad men had so much detail. The brightness of california. The gloominess of the bars in new york. The cultures of the different characters; suburban living, city life, teenage and adult viewspoints of the changing era. I cant imagine another drama being as enjoyable as a whole. You can say nothing happens on the show but characters do end up in different places by the end. I love how young adults were really pretentious around don. Wish don partied at night more instead of drinking alone.

This shit is pretty gay, the Don Draper stuff and the ongoings at Sterling Cooper are great and the sense of place and time and how they all coincide to the main story are great.

but seriously fuck all the Peggy and Betty scenes. I'm up to E04 S03 and they are tedious, like I couldn't care less about Peggy's boring religious family or whatever...I actually fast forward through all those scenes so I can get back to what the show does best; badarse period admen breaking the ice and making deals $

do you like legion? because if you do then you probably wont like mad men..

do you like the sopranos? if so then youll probably enjoy this drama too

its kino but not for young people who have barely even experience life

i started watching when i was 21 and before that as a teen i always saw the commercials and thought it looked lame so i never bothered

mad men has a lot of substance and requires patience and attention

but if you like immersive stories with complicated full characters that end with a payoff then you would enjoy this

Might have been better if it occurred the previous episode, because it kind of is jarring flipping between Don's tragedy and her happiness.

This works like a charm. I'm currently in season 3 of my second watch-through, and I watched it the first time when it was still on the air. I pretty much drank when they drank, smoked when they smoked. Going through sober this time, you still remember the major plot points but the dialogue and minor bits and pieces are pretty much new. And even the parts you remember take on a completely different life than what you recall when you're not weeping into a microwave dinner at 3 a.m. Good shit.
>>

It gets better. Way better. Just keep with it. The 1st season is probably the least exciting. At least make it to season 2, then drop it if still not itnerested.

How do you think they affected how you grew up and changed as a person?
>>
>>80030925

It goes beyond fashion and locations. Other period shows/movies are typically way too obvious about everything in the era they're covering. Even Mad Men's pilot is guilty of this in a way.

Mad Men's view of the era is typically more subdued and realistic. Whereas other shows would be filled with the greatest hits of the '60s constantly playing and famous figures making appearances like Forrest Gump, Mad Men takes a more fine tuned approach to it all.

History happens in the show for sure, but it all happens in the background of the characters' lives.
>>
>>80031192

Sopranos guy here. I wouldn't say either show had a profound impact on my life or anything like that, other than being two of my favorite shows of all time. I was aware of The Sopranos from its start because my parents watched it. I obviously was too young to really watch/understand it at that point, but as I grew older and saw what a phenomenon it was at the time, I became more and more interested. I watched the DVDs, and read up on the show as I watched. Fan discussions, theories, etc. I was enthralled, and lucky enough to watch the final episodes live with a full understanding of what the show was and why it was great.

I guess looking back, I'm proud of my teenage self for diving deep into a show a lot of people at that age would consider boring or challenging or whatever. I know 20-30 year-olds today that won't do it with shows like Mad Men.

Other guy here.

It's difficult to say. I've had lots of influences in my life. I definitely compared Don and my father a lot, although my father is very much a different person. I'm sure it helped shape my view on a lot of topics that the show features thematically, like substance abuse and the balance between the wealthy and poor. Also always made me yearn to move to a big city asap.

There was never anyone irl who I could talk about the show to other than my mom though, no one was interested. This was always a major surprise to me, because I thought it was very clearly superior to almost everything else. It wasn't until I stumbled on /scdp/ during season 5 that I realized most people think "nothing happens".

>>80031422
>would consider boring or challenging

See, I just don't get this. IMO *lots* happens. The way it's written, little things have much more of an impact in MM than say, an explosion in BB. But even then, there's lots of 'big' things like Iwo-Jima that happen in MM.

I wouldn't say most people think nothing happens. It was meant to be a dig at WASP society and portray their neuroticness and hypocrisy but because Weiner was a giant autist he made it so perfect it ended up glamourising it. I bet you suit sales went up after this show came out. Every dumb thot wanted a cocktail party for a while there too.
>>
>>80004217
Probably the only show that made smoking look cool.
>>
>>80035100

(((Sterling))) takes Draper under his wing, so does (((Cooper))).

I agree that Weiner has a WASP fetish, but Draper is a godless man in a godless city shilling godless fantasies for everyday Americans, while (((they))) reap the awards. There are countless hat tips to that culture/people that fly over gentiles' heads.

The opening credits are about "the fall" of man; hence the glamour, sin, the destruction of the family unit.

I much prefer 'The Wonder Years' for a melancholy admiration of the simpler era.
>>
>>80035100

That was the point. "Mad Men" had its cake and ate it too. It mocked the early 60s at the same time it glorified them.
>>
>>80034882

>Mad Men: Timeless drama that will be heralded for years to come. Every viewing offers a new perspective. Ranked by the WGA as the #2 best written show of all time.

>Breaking Bad: Variety of shirts at Hot Topic. Loses all of its weight upon 1 viewing because it's entire structure is based upon twists and suspense. Won 18 IGN awards.

If the latter means more success to you, talk to me when you aren't a teenager or a manchild.
>>
>>80035542

Meh. I got sick of the protagonist's constant moping. The show needed anti-depressants, lol.

Don Draper was more cheerful and he was in an existential crisis.
>>
>>80034882

Yeah, it achieved massive success because it's popular in the same crowds that play video games and only go to the theater to watch Marvel movies, which are the only things even close to being as EPIC. (Besides Game of Thrones, ofc)

Mad Men doesn't have figurines of the characters that I can pose around my PS4 so it's obviously not as good XD

I don't know whether I'd call it the best episode, but when I wanted to go back and watch an episode, Jet Set was the one I watched. >The Stonewall riots (also referred to as the Stonewall uprising or the Stonewall rebellion) were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community[note 1] against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

The Man with the Miniature Orchestra

by Dave Algonquin

There were phrases of Beethoven’s 9th symphony that still made Coe cry. He always thought it had to do with the circumstances of the composition itself. He imagined Beethoven, deaf and soul-sick, his heart broken, scribbling furiously while Death stood in the doorway, clipping his nails. Still, Coe thought, it might have been living in the country that was making him cry; it was killing him with its silence and loneliness, making everything ordinary too beautiful to bear.

Technology is a glittering lure. But there is the rare occasion when the public can be engaged on a level beyond flash, if they have a sentimental bond with the product.

My first job, I was in house at a fur company with this old pro copywriter, Greek, named Teddy.
And Teddy told me the most important idea in advertising was ‘new.’ Creates an itch. You simply put your product in there as a kind of calamine lotion.

But he also talked about a deeper bond with the product: nostalgia. It’s delicate, but potent.
Teddy told me that in Greek nostalgia literally means ‘the pain from an old wound.’
It’s a twinge in your heart, far more powerful than memory alone.

This device isn’t a space ship. It’s a time machine. It goes backwards, forwards. Takes us to a place where we ache to go again.

It’s not called ‘The Wheel.’ It’s called ‘The Carousel.’

It lets us travel the way a child travels. Around and around and back home again to a place where we know we are loved.

>mfw its implied Betty's mom fucked some black dude and her dad murdered him and its NEVER touched upon again
>dont remember this
Pic related, it was during Betty's pregnancy hallucinations

>its hinted at with a conversation that betty and him had
Its hinted at arguably two eps before it happens. Given the previous season, it doesn't add up. Makes me think that Ben Feldman was hard to work with or had an upcoming commitment and wanted off the show.

>harry was a piece of shit ever since the election episode where he first cheated on his wife, guess he said fuck it and became he who truly was: a piece of shit
Yeah, he was a shitty person. But if you look at things from his perspective, he was endlessly insulted, Roger didn't even know who he was in the first couple of seasons. He barely made half of what Ken makes. So he comes up with his own position, takes great initiative, creates a division out of nowhere. Does he get respect? No. He brings in a fuckton of business, but even then he doesn't even get a partnership offer. So the bitterness grows and grows. He literally predicted where ad agencies were moving with market data, computers and more but still, zero respect.

>Ginsberg's mental issues were apparent from his first episode in the show when he acts like a completely different person from Peggy to Don
Thats kinda a stretch, dont you think?

No... literally the first episode where he appears and applies for the job.

Peggy: You know, I thought you were crazy when I met you, and you have confirmed it by not acting the way that you acted with me!

Ginsberg: You toId me not to act that way.

Peggy: And the fact that you can controI it reaIIy scares me!

>tfw tried to watch it for the first time but it's so fucking boring

I almost got to the end of season 2. The only interesting things that have happened are

>slight exploration of mad dude's past, but nothing to help understand his personality
>mad kid trying to expose him, failed and it hasn't gone anywhere since
>made dude's wife getting sick of his shit

And these aren't super exciting things, they're brief moments of relief from the boredom that is everything else in the show.

So I have to ask, does it get better? And if not, what the hell got you people into this show?

just stop watching if you dont like it and go back to your faggot anime shit and reddit tier faggot shit like legion/GoT/westworld

no, youre boring
>>
>>80045394
If you don't like it then don't watch it. It's as simple as that. Don't go complaining about the show not being what you expected because the only thing you can watch is 100% action all the time.

It gets much better past season 2. I wasn't super into the show to begin with, either. But now I can appreciate the earlier episodes as well.
