You're asking a deep existential question about the state of modern blockbuster sci fi. The answer is that it's a big budget film for a general audience. As long as plebs are awed by Ridley scots set dressing they will continue to see these shit flicks, yourself included. The longevityof the franchise is based entirely on the strength of the first movie. Unfortunately people don't understand WHY the first one is good so they just lift out the furniture and shove it into these mediocre horror/thriller formulas and call it a day.

Alien isn't about exploration because it's about a specific breed of aliens and the chaos they create. It always has been, and always will be.

Actually, it does count as an answer.

The best films in the franchise, Alien and Aliens, are "sci-fi/horror" and "sci-fi/action" respectively, and both films center around a group of people interacting with the Xenomorph. People see these movies to see the Aliens; the hunt, the stalking of the prey, the tension, and the drama of the films as a whole are centered around the alien. The sci-fi setting (space ships, planets) are just a backdrop to set the stage for this other-worldly creature.

An sci-fi film about space exploration could very well be interesting, but there's no need to transform an existing franchise into something that it's not. A marketing team would love to do that so that they could slap the "Alien" name on it, but it would be best to just create something new
