The hobbit was a mistake
>>
>>79982932
CGI was a mistake.

Think about this: has there ever been a character or structure, that was CGI, and couldn't be improved by being practical effect? It doesn't matter the complexity or the cost to build it.

Is there anything that you can honestly say, that i miles better in CGI and it is pointless to make a practical effect for it because will never surpass the CGI counterpart?
>>
>>79983675
Gollum would have looked like jerky shit as a TESB Yoda or Jen from The Dark Crystal-style practical puppet and the endless waist-up shots that would be necessary to hide his puppet-ness would have robbed the character from the cat-like physicality that defined his role.

For most of these, there is a a base to which they added the CGi as to why it works so well, this includes avatar. There is a practical effect, its called the actor themselves in mocap being enhanced. Full cgi no actor enters cartoon territory. Treat CGI as makeup for practical props and you are using it right

Said it before but there was no choice to be made between practicals and CG. Jackson didn't have near enough preproduction time as compared with LotR and if you want to use practical effects they have to be completely finished before you start filming. CG can be done concurrently with filming and for that reason he had to use CG. Blame the studio for not realizing they needed to push the release back after Del Taco bailed.

You'll realise that the good parts of the movies happened when they followed the book. Imagine what a Hobbit movie would be like if they removed all the added fanfic and focused on adapting the book chapter by chapter. A 3-hour fantasy adventure, more light-hearted than Lotr. That would truly be great. In another timeline, I guess.

The men start together in the same zone as hobbits, and the elves start in the same zone as the dwarves. Neither are particularly interesting, the game gets better as you go to new areas.
It's a run of the mill themepark MMO and the only thing it has going for it is that it's Middle Earth. I don't find the game particularly fun, especially if you have no one to group up with. Everything you hear about the community is only half true, as it has as many trolls as any free game.

CGI should only be used for putting stuff in where it doesn't exist, like a castle on a hilltop in the background, something static. Effectively like a matte painting.

CGI characters should be used very sparingly, as they almost NEVER work. Gollum is the exception to the rule.

This. Game of Thrones does this very well. I really like the shots of castles in the background while the characters are just walking around, and then they shift to a built set once they get to the courtyard or the interior. Feels very organic.

They explain the gold in the extended edition documentaries. It looks weird because they decided to keep the golden colour and shine. They show snippets of realistic molten gold shaders in these scenes.
There is nothing wrong with the CGI, it's the artistic decision to keep it golden and reflective that ruined these scenes for some.

gandalf doesnt go around casting wave spells and shit. i liked having sauron show up as the necromancer but the fight was unecessarily cinematic.
if he pulled out a sword or did incantations like against the balrog it would be more in character. in the hobbit he ltierally just starts spinning his staff like a ninja and then having magic come out like a videogame.

I dunno, in the film the whole Gandalf v Sauron seemed more like a battle of wills; Gandalf tried to escape but when confronted he put up a fight, clearly believing he could at least hold his own against the Necromancer. When Sauron defeats him the visions he shows him are taunt-like, a full reveal of his return to strength.

Would the edits just be the entire AUJ, the first 2/3 of DoS then the rest(Smaug/BoFA) as a 15 minute battle? Cuz that's be Kino and True to the books. Also, AUJ is practically G Del Toro's movie, look at the writing and the characters, its exactly like Pacific Rim meets LotR. yes, The First Hobbit feels more like GDT than PJ.

You are a literal moron. Of course practical effects will usually look better? Are you actually retarded though? You've taken away literally the main point as to why CGI is used over practical effects, time constraints and money.

Holy shit. I can assure you, 100%, you do not see al the CGI that is CGI, most of it is so good you just don't notice, you only see the most blatant cases of CGI usage, see this thread.

I think blaming the studio and their lack of commitment as the problem. Jackson ultimately moved forward with a bad script or a good plan which he basically admitted to later.

If he had said hey, give me more time and money or I walk, the studio would have agreed.

It should have never been stretched into three movies.
>>
>>80001949

I don't think you can blame the studio*

goddamit
>>
>>80001949
>If he had said hey, give me more time and money or I walk, the studio would have agreed.
Do you understand literally anything about the process of how the directors were chosen? Past Del Toro dropped and Jackson took over?

Because you know, you are literally wrong. New Line fucked everything.

Jackson WAS first in line to direct The Hobbit. Why wouldn't he be? Bringing on a new director to film a series New Line knows they have someone who can do it is just ridiculous, so why?

NEW LINE ARE HOLLYWOOD JEWS. They jewed their ways out of many contracts and did not pay where they were meant to, Jackson had a contract which said he was able to bring in his own auditors and audit their practices, which he did, which the boss of newline took great offence to, so he kicked Jackson off. Bought Taco on, and then we go from there, Taco dropped out again and Jackson was bought in because they simply had no other option, it had to be made, a shit movie is better than no movie when they put all this time into planning.

I mean, why the fuck are you trying to spout an opinion you don't know anything about?

And 500x creepier in the books, in Fellowship at least when Gandalf talks about searching for him and that he would sneak into people's homes and eat their babies after he came out of the mountain looking for the ring, and the part where Frodo notices him stalking them through Moria although that is in the movie.

>>'The Wood-elves tracked him first, an easy task for them, for his trail was still fresh then. Through Mirkwood and back again it led them, though they never caught him. The wood was full of the rumour of him, dreadful tales even among beasts and birds. The Woodmen said that there was some new terror abroad, a ghost that drank blood. It climbed trees to find nests; it crept into holes to find the young; it slipped through windows to find cradles.'

So... is the Hobbit Trilogy this generation's Star Wars Prequels?

>Mediocre visuals, lazily over-reliant on CGI
>Poor, disjointed storytelling
>Cringy love story subplots

>Attempts at upping the ante come off as inept and pathetic
>At least two of the three films are totally superfluous
>Made you question the talent of the director

God damn it Hackson
>>
>>79986811
One of the only reasons to play it is for the lore/worldbuilding, it's really well done and things are left as close to the books as possible with lots of shout outs to the LOTR movies as well. For instance, Tom Bombadil actually gets a couple of appearances

It's also pretty feasible to play through single player, but there's nothing special about the game mechanics in particular that sets it apart from anything else.

Most races have different starting zones, but Elves/Dwarves and Hobbits/Men kind of end up in the same general area

As for classes, it depends on what you want to do, really. Some are more feasible than others if you're not playing with friends
>>
>>79982932
Eh, at least they got the single scene (Bilbo meets Smaug) to an acceptable level for me. The part with the ring was a little dumb, though
>>
>>80003974
it's still more entertaining to watch than the SW prequels

but the memes in the prequels are noticeably better
>>
>>79992323
None of it happens in the book, none of the Dwarves go into the mountain while Smaug is inside it, they send Bilbo with his magic ring. His conversation is a bit better, the strange power of speech and hypnosis Dragons have comes into play a little and Bilbo has to speak in riddles to try and avoid revealing too much.

Smaug pretty much deduces everything anyway and goes berserk because he's so sickly obsessed with his treasure, he flies down to Lake town in a wrath and pretty much destroys the entire town before Bard manages to shoot him in the heart due to his legendary archery skill and not a giant metal dwarf bow.

this is what all AAA games are, this isn't even a bad example. video games in the 10's are worse than capeshit. no originality allowed. no complexity allowed. no difficulty allowed

everything is cinematic
everything is a movie
source material is a framing device
the only thing that matters is how it looks
gameplay is wasted resources when you can earn 10/10 scores by throwing in a black person and a woman to appease far-left review websites.

video games are fucking dead.
>>
>>79984873
It was disjointed. Good up to Lake Town and Lonely Mountain stuff, but around there the scenes start to become a mess. Still preferable to the CGI mess the originals are, but still hard to watch.

It almost feels like the original third movie wasn't completed and they just CGI'd the fuck out of it to make it seem like a complete movie. So many scenes where they don't even try to have anything practical, like the foreground elves/dwarves are obvious video game cgi, instead of paid actors with costumes. Just a bunch of short cuts that reek of a hurried production.
