There is a wonderful (expensive) book called
The Invisible Art: The Legends of Movie Matte Painting that looks at some amazing artists and how all of there work is simply background pieces. They are so beautiful and intricate however completely ignored by most people enjoying the movies.
It truly is a dying art and one that is wonderfully represented in this book

Slight update.
I remember that the kids in the movie were dressed if modern day (for the era the movie was made) clothes.
Jeans and a t-shirt kinda deal.

I'm trying to remember a fucking movie I saw, I think it was late 90s, early 00s. It's a spoof/comedy movie about aliens. Main characters are two slacker type dude's, IIRC, and aliens keep abducting cows or some shit. At one point near the end, there's a scene where a building (or maybe an alien ship) full of people panic and everyone starts evacuating. During the rush of people, a guy runs in front of the main characters and two alien hands burst out of his chest, Alien-style, and start juggling balls. The main characters are impressed, then they continue running.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Honestly can't remember much else about it. I believe there's one scene where a stereotypical flying saucer abducts a cow in a comical manner, and I think the final act takes place aboard the alien ship, which is where the whole "panicked evacuation" thing plays out. I do remember one line, the guy who has the alien hands pop out of his chest looks at the main characters and goes "Haven't you seen the sequels?!" in reference to the Alien series.

It's definitely not Mars Attacks, I love that movie. The scene with the alien hands juggling balls is obviously ripping on the chest burster in Alien. The guy that the hands pop out of stays standing and alive the entire time. He says something relevant to Aliens, the main characters look at him like "WTF?", he yells "Haven't you seen the sequels?!" Then the hands pop out and the main guys scream. The camera cuts back to the guy's chest, the hands start juggling, and the main characters look impressed, then something happens that caused them to yell and start running again. I wish I could remember more, but I only watched it the one time.

As for OP's movie, I'm definitely not the one to ask. I never got into the Dark Crystal/Neverending Story/Labyrinth type movies when I was younger. All I can offer is this bump.

I've pretty much commented all I remember.
The only other thing i recall is the dude in it may have at some point got some light armour- but I'm not 100% sure, I may just be filling in blanks.

However if you know the name of that movie i'll give the trailer a watch and report back.
