The Flanderses are the perfect unattainable goody-goody family that yours could never be and a traditional sitcom family to contrast with Homer and the Simpsons. Ned is a nice decent guy and a great neighbor and Homer is a complete asshole to him and takes advantage of him because he can and in small part because of resentment and jealousy.

Flanders is not a widowed fire and brimstone fundamentalist right winger with two creepy village of the damned kids who all exist to bounce gay, abortion and Republican jokes off of.
