For me it was just a tedious mess. It had all the convoluted trappings of 3 but without any of the fun.

The big problem I think is Ian McShane's character, Blackbeard. He has a semi-cool ship, but his characterization was awful. Nothing about his backstory is ever explained, there's no reason to have even an ounce of sympathy for him, he's just an irredeemable piece of shit. There's a running theme about "saving his soul" but it never really goes anywhere. I guess the movie assumed that the viewer already knew about the IRL Blackbeard, but that's sloppy writing, and the real Queen Anne's Revenge didn't have magic ropes, a zombie crew, and especially couldn't spout fire.

McShane's performance also wasn't especially entertaining. He was a total downgrade from Barbossa and Davy Jones.

It suffered from being an adaptation of a novel that was never intended to be a PotC story. They cut out all the stuff that would have explained the things they did keep in order to be able to fit Jack and Co. into the narrative.
