Why do Chanwook Park's movies always have awful comedy in them?

Memories of Murder

Sometimes you have to forcibly lighten the mood so that the low points hit you harder. Writing 101 lad
>>79945313
The low points aren't any lower than a laughable melodrama. In fact, I would say a lot of the melodramatic scenes in the Vengeance trilogy, Thirst, Handmaiden, Stoker, etc are funnier than any o the forced comedy scenes.

The Yellow Sea

JSA
Secret Sunshine
Poetry
3-Iron
Attack the Gas Station

Do they? I don't remember any, except the ending for Mr Vengeance.
It is a mainstay of Korean movies though. Everybody does it with far less subtlety.

This one is one of the best. Then theres Chaser, I saw the Devil and that one that escapes my head, it had similiar name like Memories of Murder? Was it Memoirs of murder?
>>79945483
>I saw the Devil
>>79945481
A lot of The Handmaiden had this. It was toe-curlingly bad.
>>79945496
I don't get why people hate it as much as they do? I seriously think its one of the best crime movies from Korea
>>79945483
Seriously tough, does anyone know the movies name I'm talking about?
At the beginning of the movie the murderer beats the shit out of that cop in restaurant or somewhere. Then he disappears for years.
Midnight Diner 1 & 2
Black Coal, Thin Ice
Han Gong-ju
A Simple Life
Confessions
Castaway on the Moon
Adrift in Tokyo
Kisaragi
Secret Sunshine
Retribution
Maborosi
Rebels of the Neon God
Black Rain (Imamura)
Mr. Vampire

It's one of the most tedious and predictable movies I've ever sat through. What is it with Korean genre schlock averaging over 2 hours? It is like Hollywood's capeshit blockbusters being over 2 hours. THEY DON'T NEED TO BE THAT LONG. Both characters were not compelling to carry the whole thing themselves. The segment with the cannibals was so unnecessary and they spent way too much time there so it makes me suspect it was written to pad out the already-bloated narrative.

Honestly can't remember any comedy in The Handmaiden.
Korea routinely puts shallow comedic relief characters in their real life national tragedy movies, maybe I'm too desensitised.
>>79945583
Answering my own post. Confessions of Murderer. Thats a good one.
The Yellow Sea. I have no idea why it's never mentioned. Also, Pulse (2001) aka Kairo is great.
>>79945620
Damn. Imagine being the cameraman who got to film that closeup.
>>79945655
It sort of flew under the radar of koreakino. Which is a shame because it's in my top three.

the part where pickpocket dyke saves the wealthy dyke from hanging herself by holding onto her legs, and wealthy dyke tells her that she and the conman were tricking the pickpocket dyke, and the pickpocket dyke unconsciously lets go of the wealthy dyke to get all upset but then realizes what she did and hurriedly goes to save the strangling wealthy dyke.

That's not even comedic.
Joint.
Security.
Area.
>>79945773
Of course it was meant to be comedicm you tone deaf retard. The absurdity of the handmaiden's actions and forgetting that she is literally holding a person's life in her hands because she's all pissed is one of the most basic comedy hits I could think of.
