>>79944065
I don't know, it feels like this scene plays more to 'whoa look at the cool shit the Alien is doing' when that was never why I liked Alien as a film.

The Alien itself is an excellent design but it's been thrown out of any context here. Look at how the Alien is shot in the original film, or even how it moves in Alien: Isolation. It blends in with the environment.

Throwing the Alien on top of a truck against a flat grey background, it looks incredibly out of place. Danny McBride is obviously supposed to be in danger here, but the Alien feels least dangerous when you can see it clearly. It's when it's against pipes and crawling on the walls, in shadow, that you fear it.
>>

It´s kinda funny (and sad) that they´re trying so hard to turn a stealthy, semi-intelligent being into a run-of-the-mill leaping monster. Even in aliens the xenos fucking cut the power, hid in walls/smoke and used vents to sneak up on ppl.

why are practical effects so much more comf than cgi lads
>>
>>79946074
It's not just that, though; it's presentation.

The frame you posted is an excellent example of how to do it right. The Alien casts a black silhouette in the background against the light, creating this really stark scorpion image. Especially with Newt unaware and innocent in the foreground, the sense of danger is imminent and clear.

Compare that to >>79944065; the CGI on the Alien here, the angle chosen to portray it, how it just lazily fills the screen rather than being in the background or foreground, there's little sense of exactly HOW it's a threat. You just know 'it's on the ship, it's trying to get in'. There's no sense of symbolism in the image, no visual poetry.
>>
>>79946465
I think it´s the lighting. Practical effects always look like they are in the same dimension, Cgi effects look like they are happening someplace else but certainly not in the same place as where the real actors are.
>>
>>79944065
barely any better than the shitty CGI dog alien from Alien^3

Also, what pisses me off about the trailer is how it reveals so much. I think we see more screentime of the xenomorph(s) in this trailer alone than we saw in the entirety of Alien 1. Not to mention we already know who gets facehugged, who is clearly going to die, etc. The entire plot is basically already given to us, except for a couple action scenes to link things together.

Ridley Scott apparently fundamentally doesn't even understand his own damn original movie. He keeps making these bullshit attempts to recreate Alien 1, but they all fall flat, because he seems to think that people sitting around saying "OOOH I WONDER WHAT NEW TYPES OF XENOMORPHS" is a substitute for having a good screenplay
>>
>>79946649

That and it's a a lingering shot that gives you a full clear image of what the alien looks like in broad daylight.

In the original, we didn't even see what the alien looked like in its entirety until near the end of the movie. There's no mystery or suspense here. We already know everything about the movie. Black goo pods, facehuggers, and aliens.

1. The neomorph is probably the not-yet fully-developed version of the regular xenomorph drone. There will be regular eggs/xenos in Covenant.
2. The "crew" shown in the prologue and trailer is just flying the ship. There´s hundreds/thousands of frozen embryos inside the ship.

Because they're not there to birth a colony, that few couples would not be genetically viable, that low of a number only worked once in human history.

They're couples because they want people to have emotional support and stability for this life commitment to colonization. People can get seriously depressed being separate from their family for a year, now imagine committing your life to it.

Overall look and feel of the movie seems alright - then again, Prometheus looked and sounded amazing as well.

A couple of things worry me:

1.) It looks like a re-tread of Alien. Ship lands on planet, somebody gets facehugged, shit goes down. We know how that works already. Adding scenery porn and CGI to a 1970s film won't be enough for me, at least.

2.) Characters. The Prometheus crew were legitimately the dumbest people ever born and this (alongside the nonsensical plot) cheapened the movie. Sure you'd expect characters in a scary/slasher film to bite it in numerous ways but it's the way leading up to it which makes a big difference.

3.) They're showing the CGI alien out and about in broad daylight. Having the ayyyy on screen doing all sorts of crazy shit is not a recipe for a good scary movie. Sure I'll be wowed by the special effects I guess but it's just not tickling my animal brain (the part that's telling me there's something big and nasty around the corner ready to eat me)

So you can know the Xeno is in it but why spoil the entire plot of the movie? Aliens and 3 had their fair share of scary moments even though we knew what the critter looked like. My main qualm is that we already know the entire plot of the movie from 2 trailers, and no doubt a lot of people will be saying "Oh this was in the trailer, someone dies here" rather than "I wonder what happens next/where the alien is."

They're reducing the value of the scary moments in the movie by showing us exactly what's going to happen, which to me smells that they don't want a repeat of Prometheus where people didn't know what was going on and stepped into a clusterfuck of a movie. So they're dumping all the important points on us now so we know what we're getting into
>>

The one on the left is the rod-puppet too. The only CGI alien bit in the third film was when its head cracked at the end.

>My main qualm is that we already know the entire plot of the movie from 2 trailers
Really? I was able to figure out the entire plot by the title and the fact that they said this would be a sequel to Prometheus.

But we are moving goalposts here. The original post said
>Remember when they only hinted at seeing the scary creature and you only ever saw glimpses of it and your imagination filled the gaps which made it actually scary because your imagination know you and knows your fears.
Which has nothing to do with the trailer telling the entire story of the movie.

Originally Giger and crew wanted the Alien to grow fast for evolutionary purposes. Because of this they would have a life-span of only a few days, but would mature and grow quickly, being able to break down materials around them once matured to ingest and grow, which is where the acid comes from, which is also a genetic defensive trait. All of this likely made for the bio-engineered purpose they were created for.

Aliens and beyond sort of removed this trait from them, so now they just seem to grow fast because they were designed that way, and that's it. Its assumed though that they break down a hosts organs from within allowing them to enter into the Larvae Stage, and then break down pieces of the ship or things around them with acid to continue growing faster. Considering they have the ability to merge and convert DNA, its likely that they can stay alive and grow based on a number of elements, whether it be Silicon as some have show (considering their exoskeleton is made out of it), steel, titanium, tin, oxygen, etc.

In short, its bio-engineered evolution for them to consume things in order to grow because they don't live that long.

Not really, the practical effect parts still look excellent but the CGI (like the TRex lower body when it breaks out from the fence) isnt very good.

Practical effects are always better than CGI for realism. CGI just way too often makes you think "wow thats bad/decent/good CGI" and then your immersion is broken. With practical it just looks more natural and seamlessly blends into the rest of the scene.

If it had the aesthetic of Interstellar it would look fucking kino.
Imagine: a chunky, white, used-future Alien-style spaceship corridor lit in glaring white lights that are slamming on and off rhythmically, periodically plunging the scene into darkness.
Suddenly, they slam on and there it is - the alien. It's just appeared there, its arrival unnoticed and unannounced. Blacker than black, contrasted against the white walls of the spaceship, this viscous, vitriol-like form of a glossy, gangly, towering THING looms at the end of the corridor, almost indiscernible at first yet very much an awful presence, the lights still flashing on and off as it slowly advances, its limbs unfolding like the wing casings of some nightmarish insect, absolute silence, not even a hiss from the monster and the constant, disjointed shift between stark white light and deep, impenetrable darkness causing panic and nausea in the viewer, all shot in gorgeous anamorphic panavision while Hans Zimmer's organs boom and the panicked breathing of the scrambling protagonist being the only audible thing as they attempt to blast it out of the airlock.

I mean I don't love Nolan, but he could do a sequence like that well.

And even if he could do that - it would be obvious that this is a guy in a rubber suit because of the way he moves and uses his suit. So what is worse? I think seing real alien movements is a lot better.
And Ridley used a lot of practical effects in this film, just look at the photos from shooting, he made a lot of practical stuff there, lots of animatronics for other shit.

Quite possibly, but this is a valid complaint. In a horror film we need to take the Antagonist seriously. When the Alien was shown to be clever and resourceful in the first film, hiding in a foreign environment that it blended in to, it was pretty scary. We may be overexposed to the Alien generally now, but that doesn't mean we need full body shots of it in the middle of the day.
>>
>>79955067
>In a horror film we need to take the Antagonist seriously. When the Alien was shown to be clever and resourceful in the first film, hiding in a foreign
Most of this was done to hide the fact the Alien looked like a guy in a suit. You guys take this "horror" element too far. It was to hide a technical limitation not be scary.

no, some guy said "this is shitty CGI" and others are repeating this, even though they can't describe what is so shitty about it.
Fucking alien should look like a monster with alien physiology and alien movement paterns, but people want to see a guy in a rubber suit, stumbling around corridors, always shot in the dark, always shot half his body, always shot performing boring grabbing movement, always performng iconic second jaw shots from upclose. And you can't do anything else in the rubber suit really, you can't run up and down the walls in this or dodge or flank.

Its like they didn't try with the movie, just turn on the CGI machine for five minutes, load up some premade assets from unreal engine and call it a day. For real, though, people are arguing about the CGI when that's not necessarily the problem. It's a good CGI model, but the problem is two-fold.

1. The context suggests that the xenomorph is just charging about in broad daylight and open air, which really removes a lot of the threat.
2. The way the shot is framed and lit draws attention to the fact that the xenomorph isn't really there, which really undermines the work of the CG team.

I stated that it's nice to have CGI for things that are impossible, but just think about the shots of future LA in Blade Runner, that entire city was not CGI, and if you have to make a practical way instead of just leaving it to some Pajeet animator you might actually come up with an intelligent practical effect. Is this so hard for you CGIcucks to understand.

What physical models have over CG is that you can see how light works on them and how they appear in the frame in real time while filming. Obviously, some shots you can't do with models, but it means that you have to actually invest in framing the CG properly. This doesn't look like that to me.

And what is the problem? All the previous movies we saw alien on the fucking ship, or inside the base. Not because it was afraid of open spaces or light like some vampire, but because people were inside the space station or inside the base. You think in Aliens xenomorphs wouldn't attack Ripley and marines if they would just drive away from the reactor into nowhere? All they had to do is fnd open space and aliens wouldn't be able to get them?

>>

>They had to shoot this in the dark otherwise people would see how shitty this looked.
But that's exactly the point.

A good director knows how to use their special effects to give the illusion of reality. Scott knew how to do this in the original, as did Jim Cameron. Scott seems to have lost it a bit here, which is a shame because there ARE some good CG creature shots in Prometheus, even if the plot of that film is nonsensical.

Volumetric lighting. We will not be nailing this any time soon because you can't just simulate it easily like other lighting effects in a given scene.

Practical effects, no matter how poorly done, all look like they are in the same space as the actors because of this.

Take two artists of equal ability. One makes a flawless CG puppet and animates it perfectly. The other models a fantastic rubber puppet and the animation is equally good. The practical puppet will always look like it's in the same space as the actors more than the CG.

Read an interview with Scott where he basically said that when he was younger, he didn't want to re-visit movies like Blade Runner and Alien because he thought the stories were completed as is, but now that he's older, and there's "6 transformers movies", his motto is "why not?".

He really doesn't give a shit about anything anymore other than "working", which is what happens to all of those that manage to stay in the entertainment business long enough.

See: My Cocaine, Robert "I used to be cool but now I'll work for Subway gift cards" DeNiro.
>>
>>79956074
The problem is that you're thinking of it as a real creature when it isn't, it's an aspect of a film. Putting it in broad daylight like this really demystifies the central threat. It's not about me thinking 'oh, an alien wouldn't do this', it's about thinking 'oh, Scott is misunderstanding what made his own film work so well as horror'.

I mean, to be fair, this is one shot; Alien also has a pretty bad shot towards the end when Ripley spaces the xenomorph, so maybe in the rest of the film the alien actually has the visual character of a threat. But that this is the money shot they end the trailer on isn't particularly promising.

But Alien still has the power to captivate audiences. We know what the alien looks like, but the mystery is not just in appearance, it's in its actions as >>79956337 says. The alien is absolutely unobscured here, you know exactly what it's doing, and in portraying it in that way you remove the mystique behind the symbol.

I think that's what you're missing here. In the original film, the xenomorph acts as a symbol of danger in isolated space, pouncing at any moment, never letting you get a good look at it.

In this, it feels much more like a generic movie monster.

>>
>>79956271
Well, you didn't know there would be any aliens before you saw the trailer did you?
Prometheus had no aliens in it (except for the small one in the end).
Going in to this movie we didn't really know what to expect or how the treat would look seeing as it is a sequel to Prometheus, might have been more of those white guys, squid things or something else.
Now all of that tension is ruined thanks to this shitty trailer that leaves nothing to the imagination.
>>
>>79956324
Not that anon, and I think he's exaggerating, but I get what he means. The alien in that sketch isn't just jumping out; it's watching from behind a doorway. You can't see the full thing, and more importantly its inaction makes you question its motivation; is this thing really a mindless animal, or is there something more there? Has it just not seen me, or has it and is it toying with me?

The uncertainty is what brings dread. In the shot from Covenant we're looking at, there is very little uncertainty.
