By rule of thumb, Disney would almost always play the "dead parent" over "divorced parents".

It's, belive it or not, much easier to explain and a lot less messy to just say that a character's mother of father are dead, than to get into who has custody of Max during the weekends.

This is something you see used all the time in kids shows.

The biggest reason though is that most kids associate mothers with these firm and strict parental figures, which it's just easier to write a kids show without.
