Why didnt they just hire Peter Dinklage for the ant-man role? They wouldn't even need special effects.

The first Iron Man movie is actually pretty good.
It's just been retroactively tainted by all the ones that came after it and tried to ape it.

A movie that breaks its own rules, cannot be good.

Plot feels generic/cookie cutter and very similar to Iron Man 1, and there's too much exposition from old Pym.

Why do you think that?
The only inherent flaws I can determine is that it requires a knowledge of the previous films to warrant an appreciation, and the CGI in the Hulk v Thor fight was a little off.

It's got snappy dialogue (before we were oversaturated with quips after pseudo-nerd culture latched onto Whedon like a frightened baby), the themes of teamwork and the value of life are all handled well, and the score is Silvestri's best since Back to the Future.
