There has never been a good film adapted from a video game. Pitch a game you think would make a good film with a director attached.

That would be beautiful, but what would it be?
Seventeen scenes repeating themselves just with different beasts? Not much of a story, movie wise. (as a game though it was fantastic)

Obvious answer.

The Last of Us

Joel - Hugh Jackman

That's an awful idea.
SotC is the perfect example of a thing that only works as a video game and nothing else.
First of Warden is basically a silent protagonist, they would have to give him more dialogue to make him relatable, probably not just with Dormin but also the critical Emon. I don't see how he could hold an conversation Emon without coming of as a naive asshole.
The silent search for the colossi on horseback is probably what would be the hardest to transfer onto the screen. I don't see how they could capture that atmosphere at all, especially if they would have to do it several times.
The final thing is the colossi themselves. If the fights were to hold any suspense then you couldn't really put in more than one, max two colossi in the movie. Having all of them packed into the movie would just make them seem rushed and trivial, which is not how it should be. Hell, making it into a monster-of-the-week TV show would be better than forcing them all into a movie, but I still imagine it would feel rather formulaic when you lack the gameplay. The goal being just to defeat one colossus would make for a better narrative, but then it isn't really SotC anymore.

TLOU is a shit "game" but the narrative is decent. By video game standards it's pretty strong. It would work better as a movie than it ever did as a game.
Too bad everyone is fed up with post-apocalyptic zombie stuff now so it probably shouldn't be adapted for a while.

Resident Evil 1 was solid and Silent Hill was a 6/10 horror movie...only brought down a notch because Sean Bean didn't die.

Beyond that you have Mario Movie and Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat...all campy but enjoyable.

Katamari

>Director: Edgar Wright
>Stars: Asa Butterfield as Kid, Vin Diesel as King of All Cosmos
>Genre: Kids/Comedy
>Style: Miyazaki/Ghibli-esque whimsy with live-action CGI mix
Premise: The god-like alien, the flamboyant King of All Cosmos destroys all the stars in the sky after drinking too much. He skirts responsibility for the issue and commands his son, the Prince, to go to Earth and find material to transform into stars, to replace all that were lost.

On Earth, panic ensues as all the stars in the sky disappear, leaving the world in perpetual twilight. The Prince lands and befriends a kid, whose father is constantly absent, and is an astronaut who has been sent to investigate the disaster.

The kid bonds with the Prince over father issues, and helps him roll up Katamaris, for the King to turn into stars - first out of innocent things like coins and toys, but the King's demands grow. Eventually, after a building-sized Katamari almost rolls up a family, the Prince refuses to roll anymore.

The King himself comes to Earth, as huge as Godzilla, to roll up entire cities and continents, and only the kid and the Prince can stand up to him.

End it with some message about recycling, maybe the world works together to make Katamaris to re-fill the sky.

A family picture.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

Myst

>Director: JJ Abrams
>Stars: Joel Edgerton as the Stranger, James McAvoy as Atrus, Ian McKellan as Gehn
>Genre: Adventure/Mystery

Premise: In 1935, the Stranger is accompanying an archaeologist in uncovering a very unusual site in New Mexico - the opening of a shaft that appears to lead to an ancient, subterranean civilization, now in total ruins. Only one object is new - a book titled 'Myst'.

The Stranger examines the book and finds himself pulled inside to a new world, the island of Myst. Here, he meets Atrus, a man capable of creating books like Myst that 'link' to other worlds, or 'Ages'. Beyond that, he has no memory of his past life, but has been trapped on Myst island until the Stranger arrived.

Together, the Stranger and Atrus unravel the mystery behind his missing memories and exploring Myst and its neighbouring age, Riven. Along the way they learn the origins of the underground civlization, the plans of the evil Gehn, and maybe, just maybe, a way home.

First choice/second Choice
Super Mario Bros.
Directed by Terry Gilliam/ Tim Burton
Mario-Jonah Hill/ Joe Pantoliano (aged down of course via mixture of cgi and make up)
Luigi-Mark Rufallo/Paul Rudd (mustached of course)
Princess- Emily Blunt/ Emma Stone
Bowser Koopa- Danny Devito/ no other actor in mind (he can do motion capture or suffer prosthetics)
Toads- all voiced by kids
Old Toad Scientist- voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch/ Peter Dinklage

I've had this idea for years but I've updated it. Originally i wanted John Gandolfini for Mario but he died. My reason was that he looked like he could play a 40 year old plumber. Jonah Hill obviously doesn't look 40 but like i said, i updated it because I couldn't decide if i wanted Experience or Presence.
>>
>>79909267
The movie would be pitched based on all it's references to the video games and it's take on the things Mario Bros. do (power ups, Jumping high, Jumping on enemies)

And also it's look into Mario Bros. Lore. I keep getting this scene of Mario having a reoccurring dream, starting out as Jump Man fighting (a silhouetted) DK. But then DK transforms into King Koopa once Mario and Luigi become used to the Mushroom kingdom.
Also there would be a few cameos: Link, Koopa Kids, Mario Karts, and of course DK.
And it's the first to set up a video game cinematic universe
Chances are it'll probably be made before i have a chance to pitch it.

Let me ask you a question.

Would you actually want to watch a Mario movie directed by Tim Burton starring Jonah Hill?

Imagine it for a second. Tim Burtons clusterfuck of bland CGI, he'll probably get Danny Elfman to make orchestral versions of the super mario soundtrack with fucking sleigh bells and a Timpani.

Jonah Hill doing that awkward whiny voice he does or worse, a bad impersonation of the mario accent.

But forget how utterly ridiculous Danny Devito would look in Bowser prosthetics or how shoehorned in Mario getting a fire flower would be (or how impossible it would be to write dialogue that rationalizes Mario turning into a fucking raccoon when he picks up a feather). What would it even be about?

There's no plot to Mario. Even in the RPGs there's no plot. There's no characters, personalities or motivations more complex than "save the princess". The most fleshed out character is fucking Birdo. 99% percent of the content doesn't make any sense. He's a plumber who jumps on turtles and plucks radishes to throw at midgets in cloaks. It can't work in live action and you should know that already from the 1993 movie.

>Super Mario Bros. Directed by Terry Gilliam/ Tim Burton

They'd never do it and Nintendo would never allow it. A surrealistic/dark aesthetic is kind of what they went with in the original movie (albeit with heavy scifi) and it didn't work.

>Mario-Jonah Hill
Because he's fat? No, seriously, what's the reasoning?

>Originally i wanted John Gandolfini for Mario but he died. My reason was that he looked like he could play a 40 year old plumber

Fucking hell, you really are just intent on re-making the original movie, aren't you?

>And also it's look into Mario Bros. Lore. I keep getting this scene of Mario having a reoccurring dream, starting out as Jump Man fighting (a silhouetted) DK. But then DK transforms into King Koopa once Mario and Luigi become used to the Mushroom kingdom.

This sounds retarded, and it doesn't help pitch the idea to me at all.

>And it's the first to set up a video game cinematic universe

How? So far, you've pitched James Gandolfini jumping on enemies, while having recurring dreams about Donkey Kong. Are the characters in a video game? Is it the real world? Do they cross into a fantasy world? How the fuck would Mario Kart and Link fit in?

>implying they wouldn't just make Jonah Hill do a New York accent that sometimes dwelves into Italian swears

As for Burton I can see where i may go wrong since all he's good at is whimsy movies full of awe. I want the movie to look like an acid trip. Like New York would look bland and dark but then the Mushroom kingdom would be colorful and each section would look unique.
So maybe instead of Burton as my second choice I'd pick Sam Raimi? Or even Jon Favreau

Ok. We won't talk about how I geniusly supply the Mario Bros. With the power ups and how incredible the transformations into animals would look like a live action Beevis and Butt Head trip.
Lets not talk about how ugly Danny Devito looks and how horrifying he'd be if he looked like a humanoid Dinosaur.

The story would be just what all the games are... saving the princess first, stopping Bowser, second.
Developing a relationship between Mario and the princess does seem hard though, so you have a point there.

>Because he's fat?
No. Because he has presence. When you see hill you see a genuinely nice looking guy, who would probably help you out of the kindness of his heart. Also he's fat.

>This sounds retarded, and it doesn't help pitch the idea to me at all.

It wasn't supposed tom But if you must know, It's a retelling of the classic knight in shining armour saving a princess tale. Interspersed with Mario trying to come into terms that it's his destiny to save a woman he hasn't met.
The story would take us through 4 "levels." First New York where the exposition takes place. Then after warping down the drain, they are introduced to the Mushroom Kingdom. A strange place filled with colour and oddities such as sentient turtles and fungi. After it's revealec that the kingdom has gone to crap under an evil tyrant and that the Bros. are here to bring back the rightful ruler they set off.
From here it's more Tolkienesque with a sense of adventure and magnitude of the Mushroom Kingdom. There's a desert, a boneyard, and a icy cave they have to get through armed with only plungers and wrenches, until they reach the castle. They have to navigate through the castle until they meet the Koopa kids who have captured an old Toad wizard who, after being saved, informs them that they have the wrong castle.
After he takes his wand back from the wizard koopa kid he supplies them with familiar Mario Bros. power ups and shows them the way.
Thats just the first parts until the climax but my real problem is Princess character development. Bowser is developed through other characters. The brothers are, through the journey... but that princess man...

PIKMIN - George Miller
Olimar - Martin Freeman
I want a fun exploration movie. It would follow the first game pretty closely, with Olimar crashing at an alien planet, bonding with the pikmin and getting their help to fix the ship within an month or so before he runs out of oxygen.

>>And it's the first to set up a video game cinematic universe
>How?
Well near the end (and please tell me if this is dumb idea in anyone's hands) A young man would show up wearing a green tunic asking if anyone's seen a Princess-napping Monster anywhere. Then everyone would laugh like in the old cartoons while the young man would shrug and walk away.

As for Mario Karts, i actually have no idea how to fit those in... I'm stuck between making the Mushroom Kingdom a regular medieval land or a place like... Anastasia Romanof era. Where there are castles and knights and magic but there are also cars and planes. It's still odd how they did it in the show.

So the idea I came up with isn't technically a Fallout adaptation or even an original story in the universe.

Instead the idea I had was more of a parody film that could be in the same universe and uses "fallout" as a pun in the title.

>Plot
So, Vault Guy has to leave the Vault in order to find the illusive MacGuffin (which by the end, is revealed to be an undetonated nuclear bomb literally called "MacGuffin") and destroy it.

Along the way he meets a variety of characters, most of which are celebrity cameos.

>Cast
Will Arnett as Vault Guy
Fred Willard as The Overseer
Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly as two Vault outcasts
David Koechner as The Sheriff
Danny McBride as Lord Ginormous
Maurice LaMarche as a politically correct robot
Elizabeth Banks as a cowgirl
Ron Perlman as the Narrator

Directed by the Coen Brothers

no no. It's fine. Zelda is about a reincarnated fairy boy trying to save a fairy/elf girl from A pig creature.
Link goes there because he thinks Ganondorf might be in the Mushroom Kingdom. (Pigs like truffles)

My mind went to Dark Souls too, about a group of mercenaries in a time set before the game before the world wasn't so fucked so we could witness the decline. Maybe it could follow a group of mercenaries who travel the land, and happen upon Oolacile just as the abyss erupts. Dunno how you could end it with a satisfying resolution though because everything about Dark Souls is dripping with dread and depression and It would just end with them all dying and the darkness winning and us witnessing Artorias failing.

Good write-up.
Children who post here and on that other website seem to follow the following formula when they reply to these threads:

1) "unique" videogame that represents a high point of the art form
+
2) more serious director who has done fantasy movies
=
"Epic filmmaking"

In reality, Shadow of the Colossus would make a boring feature-length film. Just because you like Del Toro's visual aesthetic doesn't mean he could make a good videogame movie.

Boring yes.

i'm convincing myself that the only way this could be done is to have a film that does not actually feature a colossus.

perhaps a short film showing the parts of the game that aren't actually fighting a colossus. low-budget. a boy and a horse wandering the landscape featuring small appearances by others in flashback to establish the story. show wander struggle in the wilderness and let the audience draw conclusions as to his motivations as they go.

even like this it doesn't sound great to me. without the slow decay as he kills colossi you lose a large part of the point of the story of the game.

If the only dialogues in the movie would be at the start between Dormin and Warden, and at the end when Emon joins in, what would you fill the movie up with?
You can't just have Warden climbing colossi and poking them with a sword for 60%+ of the movie's playtime. That would be post repetitive and exhausting to watch.
You would have to either give Emon a much larger role as the guy working against Warden, or put emphasis on the survival aspect, neither of which really mean a lot in SotC. Hell, actual survival isn't a theme at all in the game, just the lonesome quest.
But by all means, if you think you could make Warden's steadfast horsback riding interesting to watch then do tell me.

Neil Blomkamp gave us the finest live-action videogame piece ever made.

Combined with Peter Jackson as producer, they could've finally made the first good videogame movie.

The unwashed masses wouldn't be able to put up with a movie with essentially no spoken dialougue, only some subtitles, and it couldn't work.
You would really have to make it as close to the game as possible to do it a shred of justice, but in a theater format normies wouldn't be able to take it.
Del Toro makes sense but does anyone else have other ideas for SotC directors?

except peter jackson is actually a hack and blomkamp is a shit director. He's great at visual effects, but he doesn't know how to put together a compelling story. His movies are literally high school level stories with great production.

I believe Blomkamp can shine when he has a good script and a good producer to keep him in check.

I think he's an immature filmmaker, however I think with the right team - he could direct a badass Halo movie.

Maybe sub Jackson, for Del Toro.
