First off the context is it was a snow mobiler with his kid in the back. The Moose was highly aggressive and even trying to make noise to make it go away the moose still charged and was head back to do a second attack.

If the guy didn't do anything the moose would have kept charging until they were killed. This was proper a case of self defense.
