I wouldn't go that far. It earned five times its budget, got overwhelmingly positive reviews and was nominated for best screenplay at the Oscars. It wasn't a massive hit or anything, but it certainly generated a decent amount of buzz at the time.

Agreed. Some menacing synth over the "don't get gasoline on the car" scene would have been perfect assuming it was sparingly used during the rest of the film.

My interpretation is that you're supposed to see everything from his perspective. When he first crosses the line and moves that body the music sounds almost triumphant. It felt like this one footage was his masterpiece and that he'd just discovered something grand.
