It's simply part of the nations infrastructure and hasn't even been running for 50 years.

The obamacare forced people to get insurance, even if they didn't normally get injured/sick (and would then have to pay out of pocket, which I assume no everyone would have $2k+ on hand). So to them that's a cost they didn't want. The insurance people saw it as an opportunity to raise their prices because an influx of people would mean more payouts.
