Seth Macfarlane running the show caused a lateral shift in the quality, stories were a bit bigger per episode and they focused on dancing around issues with analogy instead of just out and out addressing evolution, climate change.

The original team of writers didn't all leave, that's why the 'actual' science the new stuff occasionally employed wasn't too pointless or false. But the fact is that they needed to expand the regular cast to do anything really new (with the exception of Lethal Inspection, that episode is wonderful) so a lot of episodes couldn't help but feel samey.

Late season Leela is superior though
