I agree. I thought the first was an average action flick. I didn't understand what all of the hype was about. The second is a beautiful film and almost every shot was stylistically lit, framed, and dressed. It was a fun comic-book-y flick with stunts, cinematography, and audio that all came together to form a nice presentation. The text was bad though. The font looked cheap and the colouring of the random words seemed rushed schlocky.

In the defense of the first one, the reason why I enjoyed it so much is that it felt like it had more control than most action films. The hand movements Keanu used in firefights are unlike what most action movies present.
Plus it felt like a vertigo graphic novel playing out on the big screen.

You're right about the second though, it took what was good about the first and multiplied it, but did it's best to stay away from the tropes a lot of action films fall into.

The text, I would agree with you on that, too. It felt like something you would find in the fast and the furious franchise.

Also, was it just me, or did Laurence Fishburne seriously OVER act his part? I felt like since he knew it had such little time in the film, he overly compensated for an over the top character. Too much gusto for what his character was supposed to be.

First one was better, more of a revenge movie and thematically way more fitting to the character.

Second one was different, felt like a new addition to the series but ultimately got a bit too goofy (the bulletproof suit jacket was a bit too much, plus the out of order assassin scene where they pick the most laugh out loud characters to be hidden assassins)

The symbolism in the weird art exhibit was a bit too much in 2, both of these movies suffer from a weak third act, but overall it felt like 1 was just thematically better, on a smaller scale but that's alright. I want to see a third movie, though, and the VR game looks pretty neat.
