How would you rate this show?

I read the first book a while ago and my first impressions were:

Austin Grossman is a far better eritrr than Les.
I hate all of these characters except Alice.

Despite having unlikable characters the mystery kept me intrigued until the ending which just fizzled.

The cool thing about truly bad writers is they'll never know they're bad, they'll think every other writer is bad and blame their failures on just about everything other than the fact they can't write.

So since les grossman is a truly bad writer, the shows filled with a ton of angry jabs at every work of fiction that was more successful than the shit hes written. So that means pretty much constant jabs of every work of fiction ever written. To the point where said jabs are central plot elements.

I remember listening or watching an episode of "Sword and Laser" where Les Grossman was a guest and he was interviewed about The Magicians. He seemed honestly surprised when Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt mentioned his characters were unlikable, which made me think that was unintentional.

Yeah I read the books (disliked 1, thought 2 was better but still eh, and 3 was actually legitimately pretty good) as well and I marathoned this randomly last year and really really liked it. (got a little TOO into it even, I remember watching long ass cast interviews and shit which I never really do)

I'm normally super fucking autistic about shows/movies changing shit from their book source material that I've read but it never bothered me here since the changes actually made sense and still fit in the general feel of the books

I'm sorta surprised how small of a series it is since I thought they did a good job on it. I guess the experiences of non book fags would be a lot different since they have nothing to compare to. And to be fair I didn't like the series until the 3rd book, so maybe it takes awhile for show watchers to come around too

The gods in the books were literally rams.

Penny isn't even a "major" character in the books you see him once in the start of the first book and then he appears in the last few chapters.

Just about everything going on right now did not happen in the books.
