Mulholland dr was honestly the most overrated movie I've ever seen. And yeah, I did "get it" but it's just boring and nothing special at all. Just a basic story told in a confusing way.

The first two hours of the film are the dream of Noami Watts

The whole casting thing is a separate matter that has to do with Watts' jealousy towards the real Camila.

The meat of the conversation with the character involved two other things. One is the whole bit on a man's attitude having a large role in how one's life turns out. That's one of the main themes of the film: adopt a healthy attitude. That doesn't mean be a mindless optimist like dream Watts, but it also means you shouldn't have your ex murdered and then blow your brains out, like the real Watts.

Secondly, the cowboy is a neat little breaking the fourth wall trick. When the cowboy tells Adam "If you see me once more, you'll have done good - if you see me twice, you'll have done bad," that's actually David saying to the viewer "keep an eye out for the Cowboy." We see the cowboy a second time when he wakes Diane up from her dream - which marks the turning point into the real world roughly 2 hours into the film. Then we see the cowboy a third time, which indicates that some bad shit is about to go down, as one can surmise from waking-world Watts' general attitude towards her ex Camila and current beau Adam. Sure enough, waking-world Watts hires the hitman to kill Camila, and the blue key is the signal that the hit was a success. But it only drives Watts further into her depression, so she kills herself
