Part of the point of this series is that Rick's cynicism is his biggest underlying fault, and that despite his intelligence, he's constantly lying to himself just to prevent himself from getting hurt.

However, I'd split this into 3 categories
Religion
Science
Atheism

Religion and Science can easily go hand in hand. Religion and Atheism do not. BUT, Science and Atheism do not.

Atheist dont care about facts particularly, at least not fedora atheists (who I refer to as just atheists, otherwise they fall into the science category). Their objective in life is not to learn, as is taught by science and religion, but to attempt to disprove religion, even if it means disagreeing with Science. These are the people who would refuse to accept god if he were proven as fact.
They get their 'science' news from a headline from IFLS. They arent scientific or religious, they're the enemy of both logic and spirituality.

The problem for the nu-atheist is that Atheism has stagnated, all the great atheist philosophers got stuck on the problem of objective morality hundreds of years ago and no progress has been made since then. We moved on from that issue because we realised there was nothing to solve. There is no ultimate objective morality. Morality is whatever society at a specific time allows based on shared cultural and political experiences. Liberals/libertarians will base it on freedom. Fascists/authoritarians/religious types will base it on whatever concept they worship.

I am not striving for a perfect world because to accomplish that you have to reduce human agency to essentially nothing. Liberation has seen the world develop at an insane rate to a point where we are genuinely looking at eliminating society's ills in the next 50 years. The world isn't perfect but I'd rather live in this one with my freedom than a slightly safer one with none. However, a lot of people get very upset when religion is insulted, as that's one of those things you can't defend fully with logic, and that scares people, as they don't want to think about the cognitive dissonance required to sometimes use logic and sometimes use belief. For all arguments that try and argue that belief is good (which usually is defined in results, not in justification of the process in and of itself) will still necessarily use logic, not belief. Very rarely do people argue using zen concepts that eschew logic within themselves.
