Imagine that in the Fires of Pompeii someone from the family stays aboard the TARDIS, and we have an ancient Roman companion. Or let's say that one of the famous persons he meets (be it Shaekspeare, Van Gogh, Christie of whatever) doesn't just say 'thank you Doctor, cya', but flies off with him for an entire season.

Or let's say an episode takes place in Soviet Russia (not unprecedented) and one of the side-characters' actions result in him seriously pissing off the KGB or the communist system in general and he is too fucked to stay, decides to stay on the TARDIS. These are just some examples, the possibilities are endless - but no, we need the exact same backstory over and over again.

Few people know that one of the VNA's planned reveals was that the Seventh Doctor wasn't the real Doctor, but a human who had been switched with the Sixth Doctor when Colin Baker hit his head. That's would be the way the VNA explained away how fake Colin's regeneration looked.

They tried to deliver hints of this in the beginningarden, but not every author (read very traditional authors) knew how to handle it. But had it been pulled off, it would have been a great story about identity. True, the Seventh Doctor was just pretending to be the Doctor, buthe over time, did he become what he had pretended to be? And, after all these years, was he comfortable with who he is?

Obviously, the finale would be the "Seventh Doctor" freeing the real Doctor, and them teaming up to face the real villains. The next range would be about the real Doctor dealing with the aftermath of the "Oncoming Storm's " actions.

But then the Eighth Doctor movie came out, and that all got flushed down the drain. It's somewhat sad, really. Could have been interesting.
