According to the guys who were there, that actually happened. The families of the soldiers said the second half of the movie was very faithful to what actually happened on that island, and it seems unbelievable because a bunch of crazy shit went down. According to Mel Gibson they had to tone down what happened in the movie because there was no way people would believe it actually happened, for instance at one point a sniper had Doss in his sights several times but his gun jammed every time
Do not even debate this

Nigga I don't know, maybe they lied but Gibson was being faithful to what they said, that's all I know. Look at its entry on Wikipedia and imdb, yeah yeah I know, but there are links to actual sources that are said to be valid. In not saying necessarily that everything is true, but the people who were there and the people heard the stories firsthand said that's how it happened and/or that's how people who were there said it happened. So if its unrealistic its only, because its being faithful to the source material

Anon isn't lying here. Hacksaw Ridge does take some liberties for story purposes (saving 75 people actually took place or 2-3 weeks, not 2-3 days), but it also cut stuff simply because it would have been too unbelievable. The scene at the end where Desmond Doss gets helped down the cliffside on a gurney? In real life he actually rolled off the gurney so another person could take his place, and used a rifle as a splint for his wound in the meantime. It was cut because it would have been too unbelievable.

>>79784890
>>79787255
Hell or High Water is the most entertaining of all the noms except maybe Hacksaw Ridge (although Hacksaw's 'entertainment' doesn't start until an hour in). I doubt it'll win any of it's nominations though. It's a good movie but kind of plain. Think No Country for Old Men, but without the philosophical questions and/or stylistic direction. The two films are somewhat similar but there's enough of a difference in craftsmanship that you'll be able to see why NCFOM won and Hell or High Water will just remain a nominee.
>>79787346
I don't know, but out of all the things that happened in the movie this seemed like one of the more believable ones.
Hell or High Water was fucking great.
It won't win anything

It didn't happen, though. In the book, the solider in question used a corpse as cover to put down suppressive fire while lying prone. He didn't pick it up with one arm and accurately sprayed the Japs with a BAR in the other. This scene, as well as the grenade one, deliberately deviate from the source material and are pure fiction.
>>79787205
>rolled off the gurney so another person could take his place, and used a rifle as a splint for his wound
Neither of these feats are unbelievable. What's unbelievable is a dismembered corpse absorbing rifle rounds at that range and leaving the soldier holding it unharmed. Perhaps they should have focused on the extraordinary actions that were actually performed instead of inventing extraordinary actions which are totally contrived and ridiculous.
