Why was New York so bad in the 1970s? I'm glad they cleaned it up
>>
>>79762243

various factors caused the population of the city to decline starting in the late 60s , reaching a low around 1980. Less people = less tax revenue for the city. City goes to shit.
>>
>>79763135
so they cleaned it up by adding lots more people?
>>
>>79763135
There's like 6 million people there. I'm surprise there's no housing shortage
>>
The lead in the gasoline made everyone crazy, nihilistic and violent back then.
>>
>>79763203
They cleaned it up by electing a staunchly republican mayor who allowed his police force to stop and frisk minorities. Lo and behold it worked.
>>
>>79762243
Its is a seven letter word that rhymes with figures.
>>
>>79763288
its almost as if having law and order is a requirement for having a civilized society....

>>
>>79763203
Not really. NYC had a string of terrible mayors, declining population, and terrible policies.

The biggest thing that helped fix NYC, was Rudy Giuliani. His tenure as mayor saw the biggest reduction in crime, biggest boost in quality of life, largest increase in revenue, and a total cleanup of NYC in general.

If NYC had been left to the democrats in the 90's, it would likely be in the same shape as other Dem controlled cities, like Chicago and Detroit. Instead, the city, while still incredibly expensive to live in, in drastically safer and more friendly than it was in the 30 years before the mid 90's.

Times Square used to be nothing but porno theaters, drug dealers, and whores. It was not a safe place to be at all. Central Park was one of the most dangerous places for a woman to be, especially at night, and muggings/rapes were fairly common. Today, Central Park is where yuppy milfs go to jog.

In general though, most big cities in the US were shit during the 70's- late 80's. NYC still has shit parts (Harlem, the Bronx, parts of Brooklyn), but like most cities, it's pretty much only bad wherever blacks and hispanics live.

Seriously though, New York is a dirty city filled with crime. If you don't live in the top 10% you'll have a shitty experience.
>>
Since about 50% of white America arbitrarily decided to side with violent ghetto niggers in their """struggle""" against law enforcement things are backsliding rapidly. It hasn't been this bad here in Chicago in a long time.

Also like 20% of NYC is vacant apartments being held as havens by Chinese, Arabs and Russian technocrats, royals and party apparatchiks in case shit hits the fan back home or party politics decides its time for them to disappear.
>>

>>
>>79765835
And pray tell where in NYC have you lived your whole life?
>>
>>79765038
Nah. Shit was very real and actually kind of frightening if you do a little delving into the subject. It's even proposed lead could have been a major contributing factor to the fall of Rome because literally everything was made with lead, the pipes for water, the dishes you ate off of, and they even knew lead was bad back then but it was so easy to work with and find.

Plastics are our generations lead gasoline, nearly fucking everything is encased in plastic at some point and BPA and other chemicals from plastic production seep into food. The shits basically fucking with humanities genetics it's so prolific! So much plastic has ended up in the ocean and slowly broken down releasing toxins into the ocean were seeing species of fish have the numbers of males produced drop dramatically to where it keeps going there will be no more males and we have an extinction event, and that's just scratching the surface.

We don't even know what's going to happen with those Fukushima reactor rods that is supposedly a worse disaster than Chernobyl and could be leaking massive amounts of rads into the ocean.

I'm gonna stop ranting now.
>>
>>79762243

because of niggers

and you know the real reason crime dropped? because they legalized abortion lmao

so 20 years later the young men from broken homes that commit crime just didn't exist

Pro tip: L.A. saw similar decline in crime at the same time as Giuliani, but they didn't have a draconian "touch-on-crime" mayor like NYC did.

It was the general decline in violent crimes across the country in the 90s that fixed NYC (there are speculation that the previous rising wave of crime from the 50s to 80s was due to lead paint and leaded gasoline -- people who became turned adult in the 90s were the first in many generations to grow up in very low lead environment). Giuliani just took credit for it.

>>
>>79766321

Its demographic shift. There are fewer males under 30 as a proportion of the population.
>>
>>79766321
the decline of violent crimes in the 90's is directly related to the legalization of the abortion in the 70's
>>
>>79766091

>>79766321
>I can't possibly accept that a Republican mayor allowing police to do their jobs was responsible a massive drop in crime
Quit being a cuck. There's a reason the crime rate in NY has been steadily and rapidly rising since DeBlobbyo took office. Giuliani's policies were directly responsible for NY being cleaned up, and Bloomberg was smart enough not to fuck with them when he took office.
>>
>>79766091
Because their genius system doesn't really work for large populations unless they're already heavily industrialized like texas or extremely poor like oklahoma(haha just kidding they suck at everything). >>
>>79765908
Solid lead is pretty safe, especially in roman times. Lead pipes are only bad now because there's tons of chlorine in municipal water and chlorine will bond with the lead and dissolve it into the water. Leaded gasoline was really bad because the lead aerosolized with the gasoline fumes and car exhaust.

Plastics are generally okay. BPA is a fucking atrocity though. The shit literally dissolves at fucking room temperature, but the manufactures think that's just fine because refrigeration lol! Even though most BPA products will not be stored at temperatures below 72F for their entire lifetime.

>It's basically what happened to Detroit.

No, that's not what happened to Detroit. The Soviet sponsored American Left continually agitated and stirred up trouble throughout the country but especially in Detroit until it boiled over in the 1967 Riot, which lead to Coleman Young getting elected mayor in 1973.

Immediately after which, Detroit plunged into the toilet when one of the mayor's first acts was to reduce the residency term to get welfare to only six months, which cause a veritable flood of Blacks from Down South to move to Detroit, where they'd crashed on a friend or relative's couch until they could sign up for a whole raft of tax payer funded welfare.

This then resulted in thousands of jobless Blacks hanging out with nothing to do except mug and burglarize their White neighbors when they went to work and because of the 1967 Riot, the Detroit police couldn't / wouldn't do anything to stop the insane crime wave washing over the city.

Whites had no choice but to flee from the city, selling their homes for pennies on the dollar, which were snapped up by the (((usual suspects))) who then rented them out to the ever increasing number of Blacks on welfare.

Within 10 years, Detroit went from a 1st world city (it had come in 2nd place to hose the 1968 Olympics) to a 3rd world shit hole.

Well leaving behind the fact that I'm not that guy the answer is southern states naturally lagged behind northern states development and settlement wise due to climate and disease problems. Why is Mississippi worse than say, Alabama? Alabama had natural mineral deposits and rivers that made excellent methods of travel all converging in Mobile bay.

Mississippi had none of that. The Mississippi river delta flows through Memphis and New Orleans, making Mississippi itself just a bypass route on the way down and it lacked anything to make industrialization in the state lucrative.

Mississippi just got dealt a real bad hand.

It's weird to think that New York was almost bankrupt in the 70s and a complete shithole as a consequence, rather like Detroit. Putting up the WTC against that backdrop required some brass balls, but it helped.

Also movies from that time had a hell of a lot of character with that mess as a backdrop.
>>

To expand on this, the reason new york looks great now is the culmination of a bunch of things, but one reason stands out above all others imo. By 1975, things got so bad that the new york government was gonna shut down due to lack of tax revenue unless the banks made an investment in bonds. The banks decided to hold the city hostage until it gave into the demands of policy positions they wanted passed. They gave the city money, installed their own administrators and have been governing new york policy ever since. This was a template that worked in many other investment bank centered cities aswell.

Mine too. I'm sure part of the reason the movie succeeded was because of where it was set. Rewatching it these days you realize the story is pretty crap but the whole thing does have a weird, oppressive atmosphere.

On a social level it's shocking to think that a city would have to, in effect, be bought out by ruthless commercial entities. It goes against the grain of how we think a society should be, but then without their ruthlessness the whole city, and then probably the state, would've become like something out of Judge Dredd.
