It attracts women. Men who pay to watch musicals are either forced to watch them, or gay.

As to why women like musicals is pretty simple. Women live in an emotional wave that never stops and always talked about between women. A musical is a representation of that. Instead of having to read the actor's intentions and bodylanguage, or god forbid following the plot, a musical literally tells you what theyre feeling without having to explain with context of the plot.

Example:

>man drives home without saying a word and looks sad
>after he gets home, his roommate asks whats wrong
>says that he got dumped

as opposed to

>man drives home singing about how he feels that he got dumped
>gets home and sings some more

I would say that I believe the reason why people watch musicals, is not the plots, or the acting, but rather they want the songs and dances to be "perfect."

Because in real world the singers and dancers aren't super pretty. The musicals fill this gap by having movie actors to sing and dance.

To be blunt I would say musicals are porns. The plots and acting are meant for the audience to relate to the characters, which in itself is meant to help audience relate to the songs and dances

I enjoy musicals because of their high levels of technical prowess. Charismatic, athletic people doing jaw-dropping dance routines and singing the while. They're fun, high energy and typically positive. It's nice for a change, because most of the time I wallow in violent cynical shit.

If you haven't seen Top Hat or Singin' in the Rain, you just need to. Singin' in the Rain is the consummate classic, but I just love Fred Astaire and the '30s.
