We don't try. People who actually have talent don't get any funds and the people who get funds don't have any talent. Most media in Germany these days is created by old people who are so unwilling to take risks or do anything unconventional that you might as well replace them with robots for all the artistic vision they bring to their medium. We're a country so obsessed with doing things by the book that we've entered a state of complete creative stagnation.

The result is that nobody's willing to take risks and German TV/Movies became devoid of all originality.

European cinema in general is fucking atrocious. Everything is either soft porn, gang violence or drug abuse.

I could think of several reasons. For one thing, we have no real Silver Screen culture. High-concept movies that make up the majority of blockbuster cinema in the US (and arguably worldwide) are consistently shied away from by production companies as they embrace wholesome character comedies or historical dramas. That's also why contemporary German cinema has very little genre diversity. Another problem is the government's overt involvement in the industry. Just to give you an example, the overwhelming majority of successful German movies of 2016 had been financed/co-financed with government funds, government funding which always goes along with government *guidelines*. I'm not talking about political agendas here. What I mean is that you just can't expect anything too daring or subversive to come out of such a system.

Yes you can. Movies were funded in the exact same way in ex-Yugoslavia, and look what you got there, from complete nihilism, to open critique of the regime, to critique of communism as such, and so on.

It just depends on whether the government is openly trying to support or kill culture, and they're doing the latter nowadays everywhere.

That's a bit dishonest. Some German sob story or irrelevant giggleshit is almost always in the top ten. I mean, just look at 2015. You know what was the second highest grossing movie of that year right behind The Force Awakens? Fucking "Fack ju Göhte 2".
