>>79702884
Most horror is a passion thing. I love horror as it is what got me into movies. Unfortunately most horror is rated low. As most people think horror needs to be campy in order to be viable. As a fan I think that I cant really be scared by it anymore. Unless is something like Green room which is more based in reality. So look at it as a dark fantasy rather then horror and you will get more enjoyment out of it. Naturally Lovecraft shit falls in this category. More Sam Neill horror would be event horizon. Side question, is this Paul w.s. Anderson's best film? Also just my opinion: any horror above a 6 on imdb is "worth" a watch. Assuming you are a fan of horror.
>>
>>79701325
The Thing's not really Lovecraft. It's understandable and it can be stopped.
>>
>>79702884

The first time I wasn't into it and the second I actually gave it a shot.

Manborg is a terrific good bad movie.
I wish that somehow they sold copies on a VHS tape. It even has a "I can't read!" scene.
I honestly love it. I saw it first the same night as this review and 2 midnight shows and a DVD later. (I've been to every After Dark but the first one and saw most of the films listed. Also have gone to the last 3 or 4 years of Blood on the Snow. (Canadian Horror feast) )
It *feels* more authentic than Turbo Kid which I felt sort of tries for the same vibe but falls short. Here's the review. http://tmakworld.com/2011/10/manborg-movie-review-toronto-after-dark.html

Dread.

Sheer existential dread that is so unknowable trying to know it causes instant insanity.

It is based on the principles that the human mind cannot comprehend such complexities as the ancient sentience that beings in an early universe could hold.

It is based on the core of all fears: ignorance in the face of a greater reality, and the extreme gut-wrenching discomfort that brings.

>>79702201
wow that's a lot of trash
>>
>>79702019
Alien is an essentially lovecraftian film. It's not just a slahser in space. The atmospherics, the setting, the cinematography all really conspire to let you know that you're encountering something ineffable, amoral and (mostly) unstoppable.
>>
>>79702586
it's just apocalyptic tentacle horror

cosmic horror is personal, about the individual realization of the meaninglessness of human existence in the face of the enormity of the cosmos
>>
>>79706012
It's not like Lovecraft never had "good" endings. Charles Dexter Ward, Reanimator, Dreams in the Witch House, Colour Out of Space, and Dunwich Horror all had "good" endings.
They're similar to TD in the way that while the immediate threat has been stopped, the forces behind it are practically unfazed and their plans continue, and the protagonists know and are unable to stop them in the long run.

It's distinguished from other horror in my mind in that the horror is ambient rather than discrete. So rather than having a monster or antagonist that is evil or hostile, it's really the entire world that's evil and hostile. The end result is that you tend to feel small and overwhelmed and insignificant in the face of a kind of cosmic maleficence.
>>
>>79706045

Actually death is not really a strata of Lovecraftian horror. The man himself didn't exactly write what is, in the end, merely a story of prey being eaten by predator (I guess the decades separating him and us really did a good job in indoctrinating everyone to a supposedly Darwinian worldview, huh). So much "cosmic horror" or stuf trying to be cosmic horror has been about that in those past decades. But Lovecraft was more concerned with human self-delusion, mainly that we think we are very intelligent, that we have a grand manifest destiny, that ultimately everything will necessarily work out for us, and that we have control and understanding of a lot of things, among others. Tentacles are merely aesthetics for Lovecraft, a means to an end and not the end itself.

The opening paragraph of The Call of Cthulu sums it up well:
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

>>

Wrong, it is considered cosmic horror.

The military opened up a rift to another dimension and all this alien fauna spilled over. The protagonists have no say in the matter and the monsters aren't particularly after the them, they're just adapting to earths environment.
>>
Looks interesting, hopefully they have a lot of good practical effects
>>
>>79713240
It ends with the US MUHLITARRY OORAAAAH killing the creatures and the mist starting to die down.
The creatures are just animals. LITERALLY. The big tentacle thing is basically space elephant.
The only link to anything cosmic is "there are other dimensions ayylmao", which isn't something Lovecraft invented. If you want to see how Lovecraft uses things from other dimensions in his stories, read From Beyond, Colour Out of Space and Whisperer in Darkness, among others.
It's also a shit movie.

>>
>>79713678
On the other hand, as somebody else mentioned in the thread, not every story Lovecraft wrote was about incomprehensible/omnipotent/invinceble space gods that will make you eat your own liver upon seeing them. For example The Whisperer in Darkness is about very physical (if weird) alien invaders, The Beast in the Cave has a creature that dies from a stone hitting its head, and even the Cthulhu is basically a powerful alien sorcerer that is WAY below those space deities.
>>
>>79713956
>The Whisperer in Darkness is about very physical (if weird) alien invaders
They're not invaders (they just want to extract a bunch of minerals humans have no use for and are doing this in secret) and they're not "entirely" physical as we understand it. The Mi-Go are among the most "sympathetic" Lovecraftian aliens, of course, even though they might decide that you're worthy enough to accompany them in space trips from now on and turn you into a brain in a jar without asking for your opinion. They're still incomprehensible and they would also be immune to rifle shots if the fusion of military culture and sci-fi was big in Lovecraft's day.
>Beast in the Cave
HPL wrote that when he was 13. It has nothing to do with cosmic horror, it's a "devolution" story.
>Cthulhu
>powerful alien sorcerer that is WAY below those space deities.
Wrong. The only comparison of "power" ever established between Cthulhu and other similar beings (specifically only Yog-Sothoth is namedropped) is that he is the "cousin" of a particular group of Old Ones, and can "spy them dimly" or something (t. Abdul Alhazred). Even this shouldn't be believed as objective fact, because it's entirely possible that Alhazred got the information he has about the "mythos" from sources who were hyping that group of Old Ones for reasons.
>>
>>79713896
hahahah ok buddy
>>
>>79713896
out of curiosity, what did you think was good about this movie?
>>
>>79714329
Pretty much everything. The End coming through fiction, or rather through assimilation into fiction was a very good concept. It has all the solidity of a good Carpenter movie, the acting is great (Styles' is bad on purpose), the creatures are nice, and the atmosphere can jump from familiar Stephen King-esque to what the fuck is even happening.
It does Lovecraft justice because at its core it's about insignificance, it just delivers the theme in a very flashy and playful manner.
>>
>>79714154
>>79714154
The Cthulhu and his spawn were fought to a standstill by the Elder Things, which were an advanced alien civilization with no outright supernatural means. No way that could be possible if big ol' squidhead was so high in the Great Old Ones' hiearachy.

Also, if you consider that genealogy thing Lovecraft made as canon (and granted, that's a big "if"), then he is indeed just a cousin to the real top guys.

>>
>>79714662
Cthulhu's race was fought to a standstill by the Elder Things, not Cthulhu himself. And it wasn't exactly a standstill either because IIRC the Elder Things were then forced to abandon terrestrial settlements and go underwater. We have no idea whatsoever about how those battles were fought either, maybe "Cthulhu's race" meant that there were like 5 Star-spawn in the entire Earth. Also don't forget that the Great Race of Yith was annihilated by some "flying polyps" despite being a race so technologically advanced that they could see and interact with time.
Supernatural is an ambiguous area with Lovecraft. Sometimes outright magic is there (or something that masquerades as magic as we understand it), other times it's much more subtle like Cthulhu's global telepathy. Especially in his later years his stories started to be less about "it's magic I ain't gonna explain shit" and more about very advanced science. Powerlevel arguments about the Mythos are pointless because HPL never thought that one day people would yell at each other things like NYARLATHOTHEP CAN BEAT UP HASTUR.
According to the genealogy Lovecraft exists as a character in his own fictional universe and is a descendent of eldritch entities, kek. I don't have anything bad to say to people who actually use it as canon for their writing though, it might be a neat idea sometimes.

That dick on the right and vulva on the head...
Edward bernays much"?

I think it's easier to make spoogy triangles and faceless people scary than not scary and yet they nailed it. As someone who get scared by all kinds of mild things this looked ridiculous to me. The whole movie may end up being great but after this trailer i will never know.

True Detective is Lovecraftian in tone but not in content. There's horrific shit that makes people go mad and an evil too powerful to properly stop, but it's all the product of human beings, not eldritch gods or aliens.

John Carpenter's The Thing gets the feeling pretty good. The true nature of the Thing sends Wilford Brimley mad, that's something people always seem to forget.

Ive been looking forward to it for a few months, from what i can tell it at the very least looks ok, the idea is interesting and its a cult movie where the cultists are right about something which is always fun as fuck.

Just wish i could fucking find somewhere to watch the damned thing.

Prince of Darkness is straight up awesome. I think it's one of those movies that gets better each time you watch it.

I actually don't know about any secret screenings. Although I think know they do some press screenings.
