Most americans won't understand because they've never visited another country, let alone lived outside the US. They are culturally shallow because they live their life according to what they see on television and movies (and now the internet). It informs their every decision from a young age, and even though some of the nicest and most idealistic people I've known were american, they were also the most naive. Catch 22 I guess.
