The way I saw it, the girl did saw heaven, and as a final revenge told the old woman that she saw nothing. The old woman, not wanting to face the embarrassment of telling the crowd that it was a waste of time, just ends it there and then. I think the girl knew the woman would be going to hell for what she'd done.
