The original will never be beaten at its own game so why attempt? That's what Cameron must have thought as well. He knows his area of expertise is action and he went and made a solid action film, great atmosphere, good pacing, no complaints.

In comes the autistic, edgy cousin of the Alien series, who thinks he's a genius for no apparent reason. Alien 3 is full of empty rhetoric that confuses dumb people enough they think it's "deep". Pseudo-philosophical mumbo jumbo. Right off the bat Alien 3 takes the setup Cameron left for his successor, shits all over it by declaring 2 thirds of the main cast dead off-screen (big tell, don't show moment) and then does fuck all with bad writing and bad green (or blue) screen for its entire run-time. The ending is kind of cool but even there the execution just feels limp-wristed. Everything about Alien 3 is lackluster.

Basically, Fincher is a hack who wishes he was Cronenberg. Cronenberg is actually smart, Fincher is trying to trick you into thinking he's smart. Cronenberg is that nerd who makes no big deal out of it, Fincher is some unremarkable douche who tries to adopt a nerd persona to stick out. If he didn't need real glasses he'd wear fake ones.

P.S. I don't talk trash about Alien 4 because Michael Wincott is in it. I don't think I need to, we all know it's schlock. Some nice visuals though.
