>Gary Russell isn't such a bovine author when you think about it. Although criticised for unsophisticated writing, one needs to consider the cleverness of his titles.
>DIVIDED LOYALTIES: while one of the best-selling books, and loved by some, it's also loathed by many in fandom. It has, literally, divided loyalties.
>PLACEBO EFFECT: the books is sequelitis tosh, yet, despite being such an underwhelming story gave everyone their Eighth Doctor "fix" for the month, in the same way that the act of receiving medicine for a patient is treatment in itself. Quite literally, it produced a placebo effect.
>BUSINESS UNUSUAL: presented as a book with strange things happening, yet a very average, run of the mill story. Quite the ironic title, as it's business as usual for Gary.
>Do you agree, and what do you think the subtle joke regarding INSTRUMENTS OF DARKNESS will be?

But for real, next time you're out on the road with the examiner, steer onto the other side of the road. When the examiner screams "what the hell are you doing?!", reply with "We're probably crashing!"

And as you drive into the oncoming traffic, and as the examiner's life flashes before their eyes, you look into those eyes before you shout:

"Just one question....Do you happen to know how to drive this thing?!"

Wouldn't work, not in the era of reality TV baking, dancing and singing shows that require minimal short term memory before watching the next one. Even if you've missed a few, there's always a recap of the 'competition' so far. Entertainment for brain dumbed masses.

Drama( incl sci fi drama) - people prefer to binge watch during days off work, with *just* enough of a cliffhanger between episodes to make you want to watch the next episode immediately afterwards.

The half hour format is used well in AvED. Trims the fat, keeps things focused. Lots of shows have about a half hour of actual substance and then they pad things out with "drama" bullshit and this is no different for New Who. So much could be different if the half hour format could be tried again.

Yeah, that is a bit more obvious, isn't it? But for some reason, I don't see Alfred as a companion, or at least not as the "main companion" to Doctor Hayley or Doctor Olivia.

Are there any interviews (etc) with Chibnall where talks about what Who he liked and disliked back in the day? He feels very mysterious compared to Moff getting drunk and slagging off everything except the Davison era. Why didn't he write any VNAs or Big Finish?
>>
>>79697863
Why would he write any VNA or Big Finish? You say like it's an essential thing to do.
>>
Ear story fag here. Are the novels or comics any good?
>>
>>79698009
Just because most of the other NuWho writers did - RTD and Moff most obviously, but also Gatiss, Cornell, Shearman, (that's) Gareth, etc. Feels weird that he was a big enough fan to go on TV and annoy Pip and Jane Baker, but didn't actually write Who when there were opportunities to. (Unless he tried and was somehow even shitter than Neil Penswick...)
>>
>>79698063
The NAs and EDAs both have a lot of really good novels, some of which push the boundaries of what Doctor Who can do pretty far, and some really, really bad ones.

The MAs and PDAs… only a handful of them bring anything new to Doctor Who, but a lot of them pull off being a straightforward trad adventure of the era they represent. If that sounds good to you, you'll probably like them; if you wonder what the point of that is when you can just go to Big Finish and get the same thing with the actors' voices, you probably won't.

The NSAs, mostly forget about, except for the "prestige" hardbacks written by name F/SF authors.
>>

Only Human, Prisoner of the Daleks and The Eyeless were good though

There's an interview where he said that he got to writing through theater, which is uncommon.

>>79698063
As for the comics, they range even more wildly.

Pre-DWM: Childish crap.

Early DWM: Main strips pretty boring, backup strips very 2000AD. I don't know if they'd be as good without the nostalgia factor, but at least check out Alan Moore's run.

Mid 80s DWM: Frobisher!

Late 80s DWM: Basically a trial run for the NAs. Not as good as the NAs, but pretty good.

Late 80s RT: Boring.

90s/00s DWM: Often became an annoying fanwank fest, but not terrible.

NuWho (IDW, Titan, etc.): These all seem perfectly fine, but I haven't been able to get into them for some reason.
>>
>>79698263
>Only Human, Prisoner of the Daleks and The Eyeless were good though
Sure, if someone says "I read all the NAs and EDAs, is there anything else to read?", I'd give them Only Human and Eyeless (I haven't read Prisoner, but I'll give it a chance on your recommendation…), but both Gareth and Lance wrote much better books in the earlier ranges.

Are you reading the novels in order by Doctor? Have you done One's Telos novellas?

>Are you reading the novels in order by Doctor?
Not just that, but chronological order with each Doctor's books too. Except when I get to the NA and EDA lines, I'll read them by publication date. But I'm sure at that point chronological order and publication date become the same thing anyway.

>Have you done One's Telos novellas?
Yes. One of them was one of the best First Doctor books, the other was the worst. I'm almost done with The Man in the Velvet Mask, and then I think I only have 1 more book to read and I'm done with the First Doctor.

>I haven't been able to motivate myself to dive into the MAs or PDAs the way I did the other ranges; I've just read a few here and there based on reviews.
Well tell me if you want any First Doctor recommendations.

One range I'm not sure I'll ever be able to motivation myself to get into is the Benny Summerfield one. I mostly want to because of Brax though. It seems like most of his appearances are in there.
>>
>>79699317
That'd work too. Or Cavan Scott.
>>
So, I'm up to Pier Pressure in my BF relisten.

This is one of the ones I bought at initial release, and I'm pretty sure it put me to sleep three times before I gave up.

Am I remembering right? And is it worth trying to push through it again this time?
>>
>>79699340
>Except when I get to the NA and EDA lines, I'll read them by publication date.
Except that two PDAs explicitly take place in the middle of the early NAs, and one takes place in the middle of the mid-period EDAs.

>Well tell me if you want any First Doctor recommendations.
Sure, go for it.

>One range I'm not sure I'll ever be able to motivation myself to get into is the Benny Summerfield one.
There are some great books in there. Larry Miles' best novel, Dave Stone's two best (although if you don't like him, you'll probably hate those two even more…), Simon Bucher-Jones running wild with his own ideas instead of someone else's for once…
>>
>>79699317
>How about John Dorney?
>>79699367
>That'd work too. Or Cavan Scott.
As far as I know, neither one of them has directed anything either.

They'd be good as the storyline editor for the Doctor Who range—the guy who actually commissions and works with the authors and tries to keep the character arcs and storylines straight. But replacing Nick Briggs—running the productions, hiring and assigning directors, stuff like that—what makes you think a good writer is what's needed for that job?
>>
>>79699368
I want to give it a relisten myself. I recall it having Doug Bradley in the cast. Now there's an actor I wish played someone significant in Doctor Who.
>>
>>79699570
>Except that two PDAs explicitly take place in the middle of the early NAs, and one takes place in the middle of the mid-period EDAs.
Sounds complicated, not sure what I'm going to do there. Which books are those?

>Sure, go for it.
I personally think the best are Campaign, Time and Relative, and The Time Travelers. And if you like historicals, you'll probably like The Witch Hunters.

>There are some great books in there. Larry Miles' best novel
I've read Down. And I'll probably read Dead Romance at some point. Other than that, I doubt I'll even think about touching the rest of the line until I'm done with the main ranges. Which will literally be years from now.
>>
>>79680152
Looks real to me. Tilda Swinton should be the companion, not the doctor.
>>
>>79699734
>I want to give it a relisten myself. I recall it having Doug Bradley in the cast. Now there's an actor I wish played someone significant in Doctor Who.
Yes, it looks like Doug Bradley plays Professor Talbot, the second-credited guest star.

And reading the reviews on DWRG, they all single out Bradley's evil voice as one of the best things about the story, along with Roy Hudd's Max Miller impression, and the general sound setting. But they all seem to agree that it's a boring story without much of a plot.

Basically because I'd rather a bizarre shambles of a production with brilliant ideas behind it than a technically well-made one that doesn't take any risks (like the 4DAs). It's one of the many reasons I'd make a terrible showrunner.
>>
>>79699816
>Sounds complicated, not sure what I'm going to do there. Which books are those?
Independence Day: Definitely after the Timewyrm books, but before Love and War, probably right before Nightshade.

Bullet Time: After Lungbarrow.

Fear Itself: After EarthWorld.

If you're reading the comics, too, a couple of the Seven PDAs also take place after those, but before Timewyrm.

The real fun is going to be where to read The Infinity Doctors.

That's exactly why I'd rather two different people do those two different jobs. Big Finish is already pretty far along in that direction; the TV show is not, and that's it's biggest problem.

Just finished rewatching The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar.

It's really odd seeing episodes where the Doctor is genuinely one of the weakest links. Capaldi's acting was lacking in what felt like the majority of his scenes, and a lot of his scenes were him just memeing around anyway, like riding the tank, the tea in Davro's chair, etc. Meanwhile Clara and the Master's scenes/interactions were all much more interesting. Davros, too, was acted very well and interesting to watch.
>>
>>79702599
>Doctor Who needs more characters who are on The Doctor's level or greater but who are not Time Lords.
The real problem isn't that they don't have enough characters at the Doctor's level or greater, it's that most of the characters they do come up with are way above the Doctor's level. For every Davros, there's a dozen power-creep enemies like the Fendahl, Sutekh, the Beast, the Black Guardian, or at least House. Which works every once in a while, but too much more often and it would be silly. If we can have more Davroses without more Great Old Ones, I'd be all for that.

>>
>>79705514
By the way, neither one is all that complete. For example, the first one only includes TV up to the end of 10, Big Finish up to about the middle of the Divergent Arc, and DWM comics only for one brief period in the late 80s.
>>
>>79705112
>>79705514

>>
>>79705514

>>
>>79705849
>Couldn't you get a chronological list of stories from the Doctor's POV just by going through each Doctor's biography on the Tardis wiki?
Not very well.

For example, when does Independence Day happen? The author intended it to be obviously "after Timewyrm and probably Cat's Cradle" (and, as the editor of those books, he should know), but that isn't an in-universe fact. Ace talks about how she's more independent than she was when she started traveling with the Doctor, in a way that deliberately invokes Nightshade, but "sounds like Nightshade" is original research, not verifiable fact. So, while everyone who's ever tried to do a chronology puts it right before Nightshade, or maybe right after it, TDC just lists it in a stub-blob of 20 stories that haven't been chronologically sorted.
>>
>>79705921
>The first one is close to what I was looking for, but it looks a lot different than I remember.
Probably not the same site, then; this one hasn't changed in forever, it's just copied and pasted from their old site that went down around 2010.

I think there's another kind of similar one somewhere; let me dig through my bookmarks.

http://www.drwhoguide.com/who.htm

This one is a bit more complete, but it still stops with 11, and only has Big Finish up to about Monthly 150. I like the other one better because it gives some explanation for why they placed each story when they did, and includes flashback scenes and similar stuff.

There's also a pure-ASCII one that's more similar to the first one, which I think only covers up to around S1, but I can't find it. I may have just downloaded that one on my old laptop rather than bookmarking it on Wayback…

In "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane", the Trickster changed the timeline so that the alien invaders that Sarah Jane would have defeated went to other planets, and the Earth would be destroyed in the way he wanted. Presumably the bug thing did the same to the Daleks and everything else.

You're retarded. He had to have had some idea of what Davros was doing, otherwise he wouldn't have set it up to get Missy to go looking for him as he clearly expected her to come along, wouldn't have set the HADS on the TARDIS (which is a manual control), and wouldn't have needed to create his sonic sunglasses which would go unnoticed by the Daleks/Davros. And his eventual hoodwink/outmaneuvering of Davros is essentially the same he did to Davros in Remembrance of the Daleks. The Doctor let Davros think he was stealing Time Lord powers/technology but the Doctor set it up/knew it would fail.

Everything involving the confession dial and the rock show in 1138 was a calculated move in his part, and obviously he brought along his sunglasses and turned on the HADS feature in advance. But sure, he may not have known what Davros' specific endgame was - just that it would endanger him. In fact, I would even point to Missy's recounting of the Doctor escaping the assassins at the beginning of TWF (where she pointed out that he won by improvising incredibly quickly) as evidence that the specific "take advantage of the Daleks in the sewers" counter-move was engineered on the spot.

Then again, who knows. Maybe he worked out what Davros was planning as soon as he got a close look at the life-support cables. That would still qualify as an improvised solution, but I think it works either way.

Doctor who is fucking garbage.
It can tell any story in all of time and space and it always ends up a shitty looking celebration of mediocrity.
It's a predictable, safe formulaic children's show where the Le wacky man saves the day with some 'witty' banter and a 'clever' scheme.
The Doctor never goes anywhere in his development, just going from dark to light or dark to light depending on the incarnation.
It has no love for science or history, it just boils everything down for lowest common denominator. It's a waste of time and effort,
why don't you losers mature and watch some grown up television for a change.
You shouldn't watch doctor who unless it's with your own children but I really don't want you plebs procreating.

Guy's i'm going to say it, I have just watched the Left Overs, they want a black Doctor please pick Patterson fucking Joseph, his acting is amazing and he's the whitest black man i've ever seen.

I agree. Doctor Who might be the dullest franchise in the history of tv franchises.

Each episode following the eccentric scientist and his pals as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Newman failed to veto the idea of introducing the Daleks; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable promotion for Terry Nation. Doctor Who might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the books were terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time the TARDIS landed, the author wrote that it made a "wheezing, groaning sound."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Terrance Dicks's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of the VNAs by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Doctor Who at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Doctor Who" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

The LAST time you will ever hear Sir John Hurt's portrayal as the Doctor. May he rest in peace.

Leela's in it. What should I know about Leela's post-Doctor life? I know she stayed on Gallifrey with K9 and got into it and stuff, but I don't know the details. Hopefully I won't need to know to enjoy this.

Did'nt Platt hint Leela was The Doctor's mum in Lungbarrow?

Reminder Moffat literally left the show because he missed her:
