The Expanse has such wierd balance, some parts are awsome, with real nice acting. While others are like amateur evening at my local theater. Then parts in S2 with the martian diversity marines are especially cringy.

>You're an earther
>>
>>79654503
It's an imperfect show but the good parts are so good that it's worth it. A show this complex and ambitious is never going to be perfect.
>>
Can't wait to see Bobbie Step outside the UN building, and go into shock and sprint back inside from seeing the open sky
>>
>>79654746
yeah the show is ambitious
>>
>>79654087

From what I recall in the books the star they're aiming for theoretically has a viable planet but they're using the same methods we use today to make an educated guess.
>>

>>79654781
>>79654839

You mean how will the show portray bobbie internally realising there is no way in hell mars could ever invade earth short of nuking it into oblivion
>>
>>79654839
Even better. I wonder if they'll show or mention that the few belters strong enough to visit Earth have to be sedated before going outside
>>
>>79654881

Or the fact that any population that becomes as stable and sedate as earth would become just like it, meaning the distinction between Mars and Earth is moot?
>>
>>79654900
Physics are out of the window whenever it sorts the director as always
The Earther on Ceres should be flinging belters around like Obelix did with the Romans but he got manhandled by 2 men
>>
>>79654746
And its SyFy.

But the spotty acting is so noticeable in times it really annoys the hell out of me.
And that they dont seem to be able to shoot a proper gunfight bothers me.
Complexity and ambition is no excuse for lazy direction.
It has alot of "that will do". Same feeling i got from the SyFy Dune series.

Ceres Belters, especially bruisers who do dock work, are stronger than you think.
Ceres is ca 1/3rd g, similar to Mars. They're not the lanky-ass skinnies like those found elsewhere in the Belt.

And even if they're weaker, two people who are weaker than you can still overpower you and hold you still.

they should have had more of a focus on miller's head visions, at least if they're going to ape BSG's aesthetic they should go full tilt and really do it with a head person to follow miller around.

Mariner Valley was colonized by mostly Indians and Texans, not all of Mars.
Mars has a population around 9-10 billion, more than the Earth does today. They attract people from all over Earth.

Only if western nations stop sending aid/China becomes full-fledged imperialist.
>>
>>79655872

I mean it's always a challenge going too far out of character, they've more or less portrayed him correctly. His actions show how far out of his own mind he is..not like a druggy..just not giving a shit, killing whoever gets in his way and generally trying to set the universe right before he dies.

I mean they could have went animu style and had him riding around on the top of Eros in a space suit like a dune worm and had him speeding around the solar system being chased, but I suppose that would be a little too on the nose.

Being subtle is better than obnoxious.

And his acting has been probably best since hung. He was terrible in that cowboy miniseries for history channel.
>>
>>79655951
subtle=/=not giving a shit
>>
>>79655978

if you've read the books you realize miller doesn't give a shit, about anything. You wouldn't be able to make the distinction between portrayal and actor, so going against one of the few likable people is going to get you nothing, everyone is going to disagree with you so let it go.

if you haven't read the books, I'd suggest doing so before you get embarrassed.
>>
>>79655910
Not all African economies are stagnant,a lot of them have been growing incredibly rapidly ever since the 90's.
Their population boom is related to their economic growth outpacing the rate people get educated and start having less children.

Remember, Africa is fucking huge. West African economies are merely decades away from becoming fully developed nations, while East Africa is poor as shit.

Most of their economic growth is due to places like China artificially increasing their GDP by financing massive infrastructure projects that are built and abandoned a hundred times over. There are only a few African nations that are actually growing into something self-sustaining (Botswana, for example), while almost the entirety of Sub-saharan Africa, and Western Africa is sliding further away from civilization. The main issue is we keep trying to send aid which staggers their economies and prevents them from being able to take care of them selves/start meaningful trade with their neighbors. We need to take a hands-off approach to Africa and either let China civilize it through imperialism (which we won't do, because that would bump China to #1 status), or let them sort their shit out (which we won't do, because there's too much profit to be made exploiting various "charities" and expanding the debt-backed IMF). Africa is not likely to get any better in the next two hundred years.

As the one telling you originally nobody is going to put up with your shit, I haven't seen anyone thinking Bobbi is top shelf and probably any defense of her is because they like the book version so they're letting shit go.

Not me personally but I am also aware finding a unicorn and then finding one that can act who also happens to be amazonian in build with right proportions was going to be a hard task for a decent network, let alone syfy, home of the 7th sharknado movie.

If you've done any serious research and comparisons to what Africa looked like 30 years ago compared to now, you'll see massive improvements.
There's still massive room for improvement, development and growth, but that doesn't mean it will ALWAYS stay that way.
It's important to remember that many African nations are still reeling from decolonization & subsequent chaos of the 60's.
Some (Nigeria, Angola, Botswana, Gabon) are doing (a lot) better than others (Tanzania, Liberia, Sudan, Congo).

Thankfully they've been improving on Holden in the show compared to the book, plus we still have Avasarala.

>>79656903

I know he does but it won't be enough, since old indian woman and bobbie are the other half and bobbie is terrible.

Book bobbi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>show bobbie

>>79656943

I'd argue he is right on course for what he is in the books anon, he is literally the same, they inverted his character progression because they're doing two books at once but once big things happen, you'll want to go back to punching him in face again.

>>79656956

Oh I know, he is the one guy everyone wants to punch. my argument is that without the book bobbie to offset it, I don't see how the show can work, the political intrigue has been worse in the show and that is what helps the narrative flow with characters and make you care.

They're poor versions of everything so far.
>>
>>79657163
>Bobbie is never going to improve enough for it to matter,

We haven't seen enough of Bobbie yet in more interesting circumstances (non-military, working alongside diplomats) to know that yet.
Right now she's still a jarhead, have you ever been around Marines? They really do come across as autistic retards like that, it's how they're psyched into conducting amphibious landings.
>>
>>79657256

part of me agrees with you but without internal dialogue, and actress has this grown woman babyface thing going on that is really off putting, it makes me think someone microwaved a baby islander and that's how we got Bobbie's actress. it isn't her fault they gave her the fivehead look but first impressions matter and yeah..I won't lie that is where part of my bias comes from.

Unfortunately I doubt i'm only one that imagined her quite differently.
>>
Why did he shoot them down again?

Wasn't the Navoo about 10 minutes away from smashing into Eros and sending it hurtling into the sun?

What does it matter if they put the word out, no one is going to get there in time to investigate it, right?

Was he worried people would try to land and have a look around before it crashed into the sun?

I just doubt they could have even really found a person to fit the book description, since you're not going to find any hot basketball players who are also heavyweight MMA fighters. They basically did one big push and it took hold, they got decent ratings but I think they were expecting BSG levels of stuff to come from it and it never happened, they had this massive video game tie in as well, the MMO is still going too.

Books, comics, MMO, tv show etc.

it was largely a failure for kind of push it got. After that the show kind of fell hard but its third season which as a person that really didn't like first two seasons, it got a lot better in the third and they gave show perfect send off.

so all in all, did well with what it had.

I think they were just expecting GoT or BSG or something and it never happened. Still best ratings they've had in a long time though.

>>79663379

For me it's like

Amos has ever had a scene where I disliked him, he had some great scenes and some alright ones but they're never awful
Miller does some weird shit sometimes where he snaps fingers and points them around and shit, kinda weird.
Alex tries to pull off this texan accent and manner of speaking while piloting that I find really awkward
Naomi has progressively been getting worse as the show went on and is now basically just there to suck Holden's dick
Holden has this annoying puppy dog look on his face all the time. I don't know why but he doesn't behave like a captain the others should have any trust in at all.
>>
>>79663710
Miller's mannerisms are fairly typical for people from New Orleans.

I'm up to date with the show and about halfway through the first book and I mostly agree
Amos is pretty great
how Miller gestures can be seen through the fact that he's a belter and belters do gesture in an exaggerated fashion with their hands because belter body language evolved in a way that makes it visible in a bulky space suits
Alex and his Texan accent are understandable and tolerable after a line of exposition in the book that covers why he's doing that
Naomi is pretty useless desu both in the show and the book so far as she only goes between useful for Holden to bone and some lesser moral dilemma support
Holden is pretty accurate so far although with too much shouting and looking like he was about to cry imo. He's not much of a captain because he's not a captain type of a person put on that spot by the circumstances. I hope he learns to own it rather sooner than later
>>
>>79663710

Generally agree with you except

>Naomi has progressively been getting worse as the show went on and is now basically just there to suck Holden's dick

For me it's the opposite, in S1 her entire character was basically a one note Grumpy Bitch with a stick up her ass and I disliked her as much as Holden. In S2 she's loosened up (especially around Miller) and she seems to be the only one of the crew to tell Holden to his face to stop being a fucking idiot when he gets his righteous knickers in a twist. Let's hope the romance doesn't override these small character glimpses we are getting from her.

I love the indian earth politician lady's character but dislike her actual acting, accent and aesthetics. Not because she's indian, it just doesn't appeal to me somehow.

Question one: anyone else feel that way?
Question two: when, if ever, does she appear as a prominent and/or POV character in the books?
>>
>>79665872

She is probably the most plot prominent in the second book, and she swears like a sailor which is why the actress that dislikes swearing, is swearing.

Slightly different mannerisms, but the voice is all the actresses, love it or hate it.
>>

The issue was that the gas mask version obviously obstructed the lead's faces, and while I have no issue with that someone obviously did so they had to remake it. The problem with the powered armor is that they probably couldn't construct a suit sufficiently huge to properly represent the book version without causing some significant problems for the actors who had to wear it. Shit to make it book-realistic sized they'd probably have to actually construct some kind of articulated exoskeleton.

Perhaps, I'm just saying that the way it's described in the book doesn't match how it is in the show, despite their functions being the same. The books talk about power armor making normal person sized guns look like children's toys, and how Bobbie's head looks abnormally small in proportion to the armor with the helmet off. It's supposed to be thick enough to easily shrug off small arms fire and close proximity explosions, as well as soak up high concentrations of radiation.

The look of the show armor simply doesn't convey those traits.
>>
>>79667675
Im just bugged that they made the power armor look so boring. Especially when they made the S1 armor look so cool.
