this guy gets it. After Ghostbusters 2016 got such a blacklash, the Hollywood execs are trying to make it hard for the public to write bad stuff about certain movies.

Not to mention that Wonder Woman gets released in a few months time and it needs positive reviews

You don't need to be from the future to see that coming

The internet is getting more consolidated and more incestuous with mass media by the day. Negative opinions are bad for business. If a platform can spread negative ideas about a product, even if they are legitimate complaints they need to be censored for the sake of the corporation's bottom line

Reminder:

>This is no surprise whatsoever. I've worked at IMDb (the worst and most discouraging experience of my professional life ) and believe me, the company is a soulless, empty corporate shell that has one goal: to sell advertising. It's not about movies, TV, or being 'guardians of data' - everything is about making money. The entire site is setup to sell advertising, and movie data is simply a means to achieve that. End of story.

>The reason IMDb is getting rid of the message boards is simple: they can't be monetised. If IMDb could make money out of the boards, they'd be staying, but there's no cash in it for them, so they're getting axed. The sell-outs who run IMDb will have looked at the 'metrics' (a risible corporate buzzword the Data Team loves so much) and decided that traffic is not high enough for them to make any real money.

>It really is that simple. I've experienced first-hand the obsession with metrics, and making money (at the expense of customer satisfaction), and it really is pathetic to behold. No decision is made at IMDb without greed being factored into the equation, and believe me, they will also shut down certain data sections at some point if they get in the way of making money. Forget the fact that the site has compiled 20+ years worth of important data - if one of the sections can no longer be monetised effectively (Literature, for example), they'll just get rid of it.

>In financial terms, keeping the message boards live costs IMDb basically nothing, bar the human cost of maintenance, which - when considered in the context of the site's huge annual profit margin - is less than miniscule.

>>
>There's no point complaining about it, making suggestions, or suggesting alternate, viable solutions - the hacks at IMDb don't give a toss. There's no money in it for them, so they're not interested. They'll fob you off with the usual hollow platitudes, but make no mistake, the IMDb that people love died years ago. Now, the site is just a shiny, corporate plaything, pimped out by Amazon for the purposes of making money, with greed - not customer focus - being its primary driving force.

>One final note: it probably burns IMDb that the majority (over one third) of their users come from China, the audience for which is far less valuable to advertisers than, say, the USA and the UK. Only about 5% of IMDb's users come from the UK, which is ironic considering the site originated in England.
>>
>The IMDb message boards were disabled on February 20, 2017. This included the Private Message system. IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways.
Why do they post these false statements? Do one thing and say they're committed to the other. Just a lie to the face.

What are these new ways customers will be able to communicate by?
Emojis?

this is how all website companies are structured, there's nothing inherently wrong with it.
>>

For me it's not about sharing opinions. I deleted my imdb account in like 2007. All I want is to read some random people's thoughts on movies or people when I come across them. Like earlier today I came across Norman Lloyd's wikipedia page and figured I'd check his imdb for some maybe some interesting threads. There probably were some interesting threads before yesterday. I mean it's really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's just something that wasn't necessary and is now a real bummer.

With that in mind, we’ve decided that as of Friday, October 14, the Spawn message boards will permanently be removed from the spawn.com website. Besides announcing this news, we also wanted to allow this transition enough time for everyone to collect any contact info they might need before the boards are officially taken down.

As we make this transition with our fan base, I want to personally invite you all to join us as we move the party over to our new social sites on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. We feel these sites will provide a better way to serve our community and loyal followers with more unique daily content including news, “first look “ photos, videos, and contests. So you can still get your McFarlane fix!

Thing is, they're pretending like IMDB was just some generic forum that will easily be replaced by something else. Sure the "front" of it was, but the real draw of message boards was that every single movie, show, actor and everything had it's own separate board, something that doesn't exist on any other forum anywhere. And they killed it.

Likely, but even though I wasn't much of an active poster there myself (I barely ever frequented the main boards), checking the dedicated movie boards after watching something really has been a routine for me that'll now be sorely missed.

The fact that those boards were filled with opinions from all across the spectrum actually added to the appeal for me. They weren't enthusiast-run fan boards, that is.

The IMDB boards were a unique beast in that it was the only place on the internet where every movie, even the most obscure piece of shit, had its own dedicated sub board that was open to anyone, fans and haters alike, and which would store and keep conversations open for years and years.

The main boards like "I Need to Know" or "The Soapbox" can be easily replaced (and already have more than adequate replacements), but those movie boards can not and probably never will. Those really are a loss, and the fact that the IMDB people are just telling everyone to go to their shitty social media accounts for discussions just shows that they didn't even understand the appeal and the unique use of their own damn boards.

Not gonna lie: not thrilled with the interface either, but it's the best we've got at the moment and the founder seems open to feedback. Considering they're starting from basically scratch, I'm not surprised it's a slow start. I've started two threads in non-current movies and got almost instant responses to both. Think it might be due to https://www.themoviedb.org/discuss which is neat and IMDb never had that feed.

moviechat.org has imported old threads from IMDb but it has no DB to keep it interesting and there is much, much less current forum activity there.

A lot of people will see this a imdb not giving a fuck about the users. Even if they didn't even use the forums, it may drove them away. I know that's what it did to me. I'm not even sure why, but I feel the urge to keep away from imdb now because of what they did and I hated their forums.

good. imdb basically became 4chan 2.0

nothing but contrarian shitposting and baitposting. actually it may have been WORSE than this fucking hellhole

this is retarded, so everyone has to see what I think of a 70s italian explotation movie (revealing that I watched it)? Besides there's no separate boards for separate movies, the only movie you could probably discuss on IMDb would be the flavor of the week.

Similar to 4chan, IMDB wasn't one main demographic and had people of many ages. Many of the really older films had people who had seen them in theaters.
>>
>>79655693
I like this idea, let's crash it into the ground

Wrong, if you ever tried to go to some interesting movie's board you'd see how wrong you are.

I unironically think that a imdb influx coming here would not be a bad idea on principle. It's true that the boards were filled with idiots, but truth is, at the very least they fucking discussed movies.
>>
>>79653834
They had a monopoly of sorts and they got people to curate their pages for free in exchange. No community means people won't care about their pages anymore. They just handed their community to themoviedb.org with their idiotic move.

The servers would cost nothing. A few databases is all they needed, front end is already supplied by the servers hosting the main pages. They deleted them so they don't have to moderate them and worry about their image.

Anti-Semitism and racism used to be far worse on here than it is now. With the r/the_Donald unflux you can safely be assured it's almost all ironic.

I don't think it did. If you're referencing the frequent use of the word 'nigger', it's exactly as you say - ironic. I wouldn't say the same for much of the anti-semitism, though. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is what I've observed.

You should realize that this is almost as bad as the real thing. "Ironically" held views always invite the company of those who are sincere about it. Which has been the case with /pol/. All it does is muddy the waters, which might be fun to a certain point, until you realize you can't see fucking shit anymore.

Dude, /pol/ used to be FAR more racist not even a year ago. Most of them left for Hot Wheels Chan. The stuff you're seeing is ironic.
>>
>>79654977
>going to capeshit boards
the point of IMDb was that you had a board for, lets say, Sette Note in Nero or Le Dîner des Cons and engage in discussion about those movies with other people. That is simply not possible on a regular forum where threads about obscure movies get slid into oblivion. Let alone ask specific questions about some obscure movie, you'd have to have it all mashed in a general.

its been inundated with them for years. Otherwise no one would've cared that imdb was shutting down the worst forum in existence.

>>79656780
yeah, but it connects to imdb and imports all their info about tv shows and movies so that's a huge plus.

It's like the boards away form IMDB.

It could be /film/
>>
>>79652510

Don't worry guys IMDB says that their facebook page is now the primary way that users communicate and talk about movies. they said it so it MUST be true!
>>

A a good idea, I see great potential.

However, I wonder what the moderation will be like.
>>
>>79657002

am i wrong in that it doesn't have any individual movie boards? that was pretty much the whole point of IMDB. I never cared about their general message boards.
>>
>>79656954
>only for the most basic and common of information?
IMDb has more information of its type than any site on the internet.
>>
>>79657023
>am i wrong in that it doesn't have any individual movie boards?
Yes. Search any movie, and you will find its board. Start a new thread there if you want. Example, Citizen Kane:
http://www.moviechat.org/movies/tt0033467

As you can see, it even uses the IMDb ID for ease of use.
>>
>>79657066

nice. thanks.
>>
>>79657112
It seems like they've copied threads from certain popular movies/actors/series onto their site from IMDb before they closed down as well, which is nice since IMDb didn't give a shit about that.
>>
>>79656730

this. the fact that you could watch an obscure movie or a movie from the 40s and go to their message board after watching it to find a bunch of people talking about the film. sure there were a lot of trolls on the popular movie boards and actor/actress boards but you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. IMDB shutting the whole thing down is stupid.
>>
>>79657158
I think they copied EVERYTHING, not just popular stuff. Check this:http://www.moviechat.org/movies/tt0069019
>>79657295
Agreed. I'm pretty sure the highest amount of trolling happened in the general boards btw. I never used those though.
>>
>>79652917
You never worked for IMDB simply because of your autistic green text bullshit. KYS.

>>
>>79657491

I recommend you just follow my advice. The page is there for a reason, to keep tourists like you from spouting stupid shit. You should learn how a site works before posting on it.
Meanwhile, stop trying to fit in. You can't even do that convincingly.
