I don't know why this triggers me so much but it does. I mean it's not like having a red telephone booth instead of a blue police box would automatically make the writing worse or affect anything else about the show, really. But I just know if this had been the new series I would consider it not muh real Doctor Who.

>"Untitled 2008 Christmas special"[edit]
On Christmas Eve, an alien creature attaches itself to author J.K. Rowling. Suddenly, the real world is replaced by a magical reality influenced by the writer's own imagination. The Doctor must battle witches and wizards to reach Rowling and put the world to rights.[216]
>>
>>79649106
I usually prefer the animations even though they're shitty. Having things actually move is just so important to the feel of a television show.

>>79649170
You know, Voyage of the Damned wasn't really that bad.
>>
>>79649256
I read somewhere that it wasn't done because they weren't sure how good of an actor J.K could be.

Anyone wonder if Utopia was the first time the Doctor subconsciously ran away from Jack?

He'd been on Earth several times previously after being made immortal, specifically in School Reunion, where he parked the Tardis in a cupboard in a school, Fear Hear, Love and Monsters, where both times he parked it in public, but nowhere near where Jack would have been, in Army of Ghosts the Tardis landed near Rose's home, which is amazing that Jack didn't find out about because he admitted to watching her. Then it was brought to Canary Wharf.

Then, he went back to Earth the following Christmas, but the Tardis was in transit many times in that episode so it might have been hard for Jack to track down, or maybe Ten was sensing Jack was in the city and trying to keep it from being fixed down?

Then there's Smith and Jones, where he left it in an alley when that hospital was taken to the moon. It's conceivable Jack found it, but maybe couldn't get away from Torchwood, or waited hours for the Doctor to return and couldn't wait any longer. But if he found it, why didn't he just open it and hide inside? Then it landed in Martha's apartment in Lazarus Experiment, makes sense Jack couldn't find it then.
Then nothing until the Angels found it in Blink. Now Jack could have heard about it since it was kept in a police station, but maybe it wasn't widely discussed.

Which brings us to Utopia. Jack had just been dead for several days, then came back. He's more confused then ever about his immortality, when sudden, his doctor detector starts going off, and he see's the Tardis materializing near the Rift, where he runs and clings to the other side and the adventure proceeds as we saw.

So all those times Jack didn't encounter the Doctor, was Jack just dumb and unable to find him when he was in the same time zone, or was Ten intentionally parking the Tardis in areas he couldn't sense Jack on a subconscious level, if he could help it?

was it ever shown/known when Jack/Torchwood came into possession of the Hand.
>>
Saying Gareth has been erased triggers Gallifrey Base so much I love it.
>>
>>79653199
It had to have been after The Christmas Invasion sometime, but it can't have been too long because it hadn't started to atrophy (assuming Time Lord limbs that are removed atrophy at the same rate as human ones). Torchwood had to have been sweeping up the mess caused by the ship and its destruction, it makes sense either Torchwood 3 and Jack was there to find the hand, or Torchwood 1 found the hand and Jack found out about it and stole it.

yeah I figured that as well but Jack never said.

I really like your thoughts here though. Just some things because I am not clear.

Where was the hand at any given time London, Cardiff or in between?
What's the range of the hand's reaction, how far can it reach?
When did Jack/Torchwood realise that it was The Doctor's hand?
>>
>The Ice Warriors (episodes 1 & 4–6 of 6, with both animated full and "telesnap" partial reconstructions of episodes 2 & 3
Are there recons/telesnaps on the Ice Warriors DVD?
>>
>>79653502
Since it was just in a jar, it was easily portable. Jack could have very well just waited until hearing about some sort of disturbance involving aliens, grabbed a car and the hand and went to investigate, but simply not arrived in time, or been unable to find the Tardis, the Doctor or his companion. Or if the doctor was out of contact with the Tardis, like in Smith and Jones when he was stuck on the moon, the Tardis could have de-materialized by itself and rematerialized later when Jack had gone, to prevent him from getting inside with his Tardis key.

As for when Jack realized it was the doctor's hand, Harriet Jones and her right hand man both saw it get chopped off, then probably heard about what was recovered and put two and two together and either told Jack or found out about it by shagging assistants and soldiers to get information.

Cool you've made me think about it.
My bad memory with Harriet being there. And your other theory is downright believable. Excellent

Going Back to the Doctor running away from Jack, maybe why all of the unknown criss-crossing and just missing could've been the TARDIS avoiding Jack.

>>79653784
Yes! Like in Idiots Lantern, when Ten and Rose were heading to 70's New York but ended up in 50's London, maybe it sensed that Jack was in 70's New York at the time for one reason or another. It would honestly explain so much.

>Alright let's go to <insert year here>! *activates Tardis*
>Tardis gets scared and senses Jack, decides to go to a far off planet in orbit around a black hole instead

>Alright Rose, ready for 1979? *activates Tardis*

>Tardis gets terrified, senses Jack in 1979 and goes to 1879, where yes, Jack is still around and active but probably isn't in Scotland, and then drops them right in the middle of events that would lead to Torchwood being created

Guess which episode this is from.

Before the time war, Time Road knew that it came like a storm in the wind. There were many prophecies and stories, legends before the fact. One of them was about creatures called hybrids. Half Darek, Halftime Road, Ultimate Warrior. But who is it? Does it bring about peace or destruction? Is it true or is it an illusion? I confess, I know that hybrids are true. I know where it is and what it is. I confess, I am afraid.

Planet 55 had gotten really good at them. Really a shame they aren't doing more. Reign of Terror was kind of bad, but their Moonbase is by far the best way to watch those missing episodes.

With PotD I had watched the narrated recon, the animation one was horrible but it did add something I didn't get before which was the amount of awkward silence in the first scene. I never realized how funny it was supposed to be because I had always seen it with someone talking between the dialogue, but just having Polly and Ben staring dumbfounded at this weird guy digging through shit smiling. I prefer the recon for this story but the animation does offer some benefit.

>My favourite behind the scenes thing about Power is that because it was so rushed to make Chris had to write it whilst on holiday, and without his wife knowing...getting up early and sneaking off to coffee shops to write a page at a time before heading back. It must have made the themes of the episode and its central double life that Amy and Rory are living that bit more personal!

>We don't really know, apart from that he behaved very badly and uncooperatively and either wouldn't perform what he was asked to or deliberately sabotaged his performance. Perhaps he thought Doctor Who was beneath him... in which case he shouldn't have agreed to appear in it.

>It must have been quite a massive dive in expectations for Power of Three from "oh my GOD! Steven Berkoff is going to be in my episode!" to "oh my GOD! Steven Berkoff is making a complete ¤¤¤¤ing mess of my episode!" to "oh my GOD! Steven Berkoff has left his sequences so unutterably awful that I have to rewrite AFTER IT'S ALREADY BEEN SHOT!" to "all I can use to end my episode are the regular cast, some black drapes, and some stock computer screens!"

Doctor who is fucking garbage.
It can tell any story in all of time and space and it always ends up a shitty looking celebration of mediocrity.
It's a predictable, safe formulaic children's show where the Le wacky man saves the day with some 'witty' banter and a 'clever' scheme.
The Doctor never goes anywhere in his development, just going from dark to light or dark to light depending on the incarnation.
It has no love for science or history, it just boils everything down for lowest common denominator. It's a waste of time and effort,
why don't you losers mature and watch some grown up television for a change.
You shouldn't watch doctor who unless it's with your own children but I really don't want you plebs procreating.

So, after rereading Gareth's Four MAs and Shada, I have a question.

The Doctor is always noticing other men's "full, sensual lips", and the way those lips move, especially the bad guys'.

Meanwhile, the bad guys, and Romana, and the potential companions/guest characters of both sexes are always noticing the Doctor's "large, strong frame" and how it makes them feel safe and "girly".

Which one represents what Gareth is into, and which one represents what Gareth wants to be? (Honestly, I always figured he'd be more into asses than lips or shoulders, but I guess not.)

Shadowy blue face and beardy guy are versions of the Other, plus >>79664806. Don't know about the Greek (?) statue or Wells' Time Traveler - he was kind of a predecessor to the Doctor just in the history of SF, but not in-universe afaik. Unless you really stretch that quote about the Other being from a "primitive planet".
>>
>>79659146
We only saw the last days of the Time War. Both fleets were exhausted, with their major weapons already deployed earlier in the war. All they had left in the final days was pew-pew lasers.
>>

>>
>John Hurt's final audios are STILL not out
They're going to wait until the last day of the month, aren't they?
>>
>>79664977
>Greek statue
That's a famous statue of Dionysus.

Maybe Dionysus is supposed to be a human attempt at representing the story of the Other or something? But I think it's just copying someone else's mistake that ends up all over the place. There was a website in the early days of the internet about ancient/classical time travelers that included his picture along with people like King Raivata from the Mahabharata and Jeremiah from the Apocrypha, even though he doesn't have any time travel myths like they do. And then he's mentioned in the book from Donnie Darko. And probably other places too.

>Wells' Time Traveler
Timelash (especially the novelisation) is meant to imply that Wells's time traveler was a fictionalised version of the Doctor. (The novelisation screws it up by saying Wells had just finished War of the Worlds and was looking for an idea for his next book, because The Time Traveler is actually a few books before War, not the next one, but ignore that.)
>>
>>79665510
Clara saved Doctor infinite number of times.
What is more, she actually made him special Time Lord because she was in his past and did a leg thing in Listen.
>>
Is Queen Victoria a Clara copy
>>
>>79665479
The thing is, they're not fighting a space war, they're fighting a time war. Fleets and weapons shouldn't matter when be sending agents back to rewrite each other's history or finding ways around time transduction barriers or whatever should be far more important than having more guns at some particular point in spacetime.

But then RTD had already kind of ruined that by giving even the barest of details.

And even before RTD ripped off the war from Lawrence Miles, he'd already ruined it the same way with the military tech and tactics stuff mentioned offhand in Interference and Dead Romance, not to mention the Ancestor Cell turning it into a straightforward invasion of Gallifrey.
>>
>>79665676
Without Queen Victoria, no Torchwood, so the Master leaves the Doctor stuck at the end of time forever.
>>
>>79665750

I hope Missy is the frenemy again, it would be boring if shes the big bad in series 10. I doubt she is though. I want to see Missy and the Doctor team up against a much greater threat. Capaldi said the threat was very cosmic in series 10, so here's hoping.
>>

>>
>>79665850
>Maybe "Utopia" was post-Time War Gallifrey.

>>
>>79666227
I think Moffat said that he didn't bother explaining it because they never bothered doing so in the Classic series.
>>
>>79666179
As long as he's not in a wheelchair I'd like to see him in the role.

Hell, even if he's in a wheelchair, I want him in the role. They can just have him in the story rolling around in Davros's chair.

>>79666232
They could have The Five Doctors with 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. And have 9 be stuck in the bleeding vortex again when he doesn't want to show up.
>>
>>79666227
>Am I the only one triggered by Moffat giving up on explaining how Daleks / Master / Davros survive?
Most of the explanations have been incredibly stupid, and the times in the classic series where they just didn't bother were generally better than the times they gave yet another incredibly stupid explanation. I'm much more bothered by the fact that RTD insisted on doing the latter every time than the fact that Moffat hung a lampshade on doing the former one time.
>>
>>79666290
>They could have The Five Doctors with 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. And have 9 be stuck in the bleeding vortex again when he doesn't want to show up.
Wouldn't it be even more Five Doctors to have 9 stuck in the vortex and also have 12 replaced by a different actor because he's too old/dead to appear?
>>
>>79666290
We'll probably be on the 14th Doctor by then
>>
>>79666349
>We'll probably be on the 14th Doctor by then
Perfect! That's two times 7, so we can just redo that story, with all 14 Doctors and a slew of companions all just randomly turning into each other for no apparent reason. Maybe they can wander around Emmerdale Farm this time instead of Albert Square.
>>
>>79666388
I want a Doctor Who/The Only way is Essex crossover
>>
>>79666227
>Am I the only one triggered by Moffat giving up on explaining how Daleks / Master / Davros survive?
Missy actually did explain it in her next appearance. And the Daleks survive because the Doctor is no longer destroying the really really last ever Daleks for real and I mean it this time each time he meets them, the way he did until RTD, so there's no question of their survival in the first place.
>>
>>79666311
But explaining things actually make people relate to the show, it makes people want to continue watching.

Do you think Parting of the Ways would be that powerful if Daleks wasnt BACK, if they were just there?
Nuwho wasnt cancelled after two series because people want to relate, even to archenemies. And you cant relate to enemies if they just pop up randomly,
>>
>>79666427
>I want a Doctor Who/The Only way is Essex crossover
Now that Doctor Who has conquered America, clearly the next frontier is Mexico and Latin America in general. Which means we need a Doctor Who/La Venganza crossover.

But explaining things badly makes people scoff at your bad explanation and throws them out of their suspension of disbelief.

And there's only so many ways you can explain away a no-take-backsies permadeath before it's clear you're writing a bad panto.

>Do you think Parting of the Ways would be that powerful if Daleks wasnt BACK, if they were just there?
That works one time: the horror that the Doctor sacrificed everything to stop the Daleks and it turns out he didn't even succeed is a huge part of the story. But it doesn't work year after year. In Journey's End, the Daleks aren't back to add to the Doctor's tragedy, they're back because it's final time and we just did the Master. It would have actually been better if the Daleks were just still around, and the fact that they've impossibly come back yet again with another explanation that should have been impossible but the story cheated just cheapens the time they did that out of necessity in Parting.

And Big Finish used it multiple times, and one of the novels, and probably a few times in the comics.

But it's simply inexcusable that Moffat should contribute to a pre-existing running joke like that. It's almost as bad as when he had someone react humorously to the TARDIS being bigger on the inside!

Seriously? From the pilot episode where Ian turns around and goes back outside and come back in to the TV Movie bit about the motorcycle, it's all over classic Who.
>>
>>79671309

Which makes it actually more of a joke on the Brig being angry that the Doctor redecorated his room using UNIT gear rather than realizing he'd got the TARDIS working again and they were inside it…
>>

Three times in Moff's era (one of those three by Gareth, Closing Time), or three times by Moff (one of those three in RTD's era, Time Crash). Either way, correcting someone for saying Moff used it three times is unfair.
>>
>>79671380
Do you seriously have to react like this? Seriously?

You're right about the TV movie thing, that's definitely a "bigger on the inside" gag. As for Ian going back outside, I don't know. I think there's a pretty big difference between a realistic reaction of bewilderment at the TARDIS, and playing it for laughs. Not saying you're wrong about it being "all over classic Who", because like I said, I can't remember, and I was just genuinely asking about it. But being able to name two examples from a few decades of television isn't very convincing. In the new series, basically every single time somebody enters the TARDIS for the first time there is guaranteed to be a "bigger on the inside" joke, and I feel like that was mostly established after the classic series.
>>
>>79671245
If this is bait than it's honestly the best bait I think I've ever seen in /who/. Really riling me up

Doesn't include the pilot, and only one reference per episode, and includes all of the non-jokey ones as well as the jokey ones.

Moffat hasn't reused the "It's bigger on the inside! "That's because it's dimensionally transcendental." "What does that mean? "It means it's bigger on the inside." In fact, most of the jokey versions he reused came from the novels, not the classic show (like Rory's).
>>
>>79671551
>Do you seriously have to react like this? Seriously?
If people are going to complain about how Moff is ruining the show by doing something classic Who never did, then they ought to actually know what classic Who actually did.

If you're not the original anon that the reply was a reply to, then apologies. But this, just like the "redecorated" thing the original anon was complaining about, is a running joke from the classic series, and any 90s fan would know that, but NuWho fans nevertheless accuse Moffat of ruining the show by creating it and/or overusing it.

The inside dimensions aren't connected to the outside dimensions, so there's no reason the door has to look at all similar from both sides.

RTD just decided it would look cool if they did, so they tried it and it did look cool, and I guess that's why all the designers since then have followed it even though nobody's instructing them to do so anymore?

iirc there was a little dimensional gap or something between the wooden doors and the big white slabs, too - could swear there's a book where someone (Nyssa?) talks about a weird feeling as you step across.
>>
>>79671859
>there's no reason the same side of the door has to look the same on both sides, and pivot from the same hinge

???

The interior doors are thick as fuck and the hinge is only on the inner side. What happens if you put something on the ground in-between the wall that the hinges are on and the hinge-facing side of the door while it's partially open? What does it look like to the outside world? That gap doesn't exist in the police box's door
>>
>>79671783
>I'm guessing you're probably going to post this,
Never seen it actually. But appropriate that the guys who did a DWM gag column named "Doctor Who?" wrote a gag book named "Bigger on the Inside".

And sorry for reposting the same video link.
>>
>>79671702
Of course I know the redecorating thing is a meme line from the classic series. I wasn't complaining about anything.

>>79671594
Thanks for posting this. I suppose it's not that different from the classic series reactions, except there used to be more variety. Now they all literally just say "bigger on the inside".

>>79671756
I always wondered this. I could never tell if those doors were supposed to lead directly outside or if there was some little antechamber.
>>
>>79671976
>What does it look like to the outside world?
As far as I know, we've never actually seen, but most likely from the outside it looks like the police box door is open and there's something between the door and the frame or just inside the doorway. I'm not sure how that's a problem.

A bigger problem might be if you took something too big to fit through the police box door, opened the inner doors, and plopped it down between them. Then what happens? Does it look smaller? Or does it look like it's behind the doorway instead of inside it? Or is your brain forced to make sense of something that doesn't work in 3D (like when people enter Compassion, since someone brought her up)? Or does it just look fucked up and impossible? It seems like something that would have come up in the NAs, but I don't think it ever did.

>>79671965
>iirc there was a little dimensional gap or something between the wooden doors and the big white slabs, too - could swear there's a book where someone (Nyssa?) talks about a weird feeling as you step across.
Yeah, that sounds familiar, but I don't remember any details.

I like how they used it to show some conflict between Rory and the Doctor. "Bigger on the inside" really got grating in this video though haha
>>
>>79672260
That's disappointing. I thought they were all supposed to be incarnations of the Doctor.
>>
>>79672077
>Now they all literally just say "bigger on the inside".
When Martha says that, the Doctor mouths along with it, since the joke is that everyone literally says that, but half of them say something completely different, because that's what the joke actually is. For example:
>Wilf: (speechless, until the Doctor says "Yes, it's bigger on the inside", then): I thought it would be cleaner.
>Rory: It's another dimension… I've been reading up on scientific theories.
>Clara: It's smaller on the outside.

And even the ones who do the usual thing usually say it in a different way, just like in the classic series:
>Rose: The inside's… bigger than the outside?
>Donna: It's… It's… (speechless, waves hands to indicate bigger)
>Clara. Bigger. On the inside, actually bigger.

Is that really less variety than when Leela said "larger" instead of "bigger" or when Nyssa turned it into a longer sentence?

I think Canton did say it straight, but I can't think of anyone else.

>I thought they were all supposed to be incarnations of the Doctor.
If the Great Old Ones are really the Time Lords from the previous universe, Nyarlathotep is the Other/Doctor figure among them.

I don't think that was any part of the Cartmel Masterplan; it's just something Hinton made out of stuff that Andy Lane and Gary Russell had piled on top of it in their NAs. But then the Morbius Doctors aren't part of the Plan either, so I guess that's OK?

Oh, they are. The EU got weeeiiird.

>The sense of something other and alien was always there, amongst other things -indeed, she thought, the Doctor’s myriad aspects and attributes seemed almost infinitely malleable, some receding into the background while others came to the fore to deal with whatever circumstance required them. The man who sat now, regarding the world in general with good-humoured interest, seemed, as it were, to be a kind of personality default-setting - but just how much of this was artifice? To what extent did he actively control the perceptions of those around him? What crawling and gut-wrenching horrors would you actually see if you stripped away the levels of deception and misdirection and looked at him with a…?

>(And just what had exactly had she been thinking about now? Oh well. Probably nothing important.)
>>
>>79672299
>that was my question in the first place
You were asking about the small gap between the door and the wall it's attached to. Since that gap is much smaller than the actual doorway, presumably the easiest thing would be for it to just look like it's in the doorway instead, as I said.

Something too big to fit even in the doorway is more of a problem, but still less of a problem than Compassion, which isn't a problem. Obviously, to quote her.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Russell and Hinton bits were in an MA and a PDA, not NAs. You just get so used to "NAs=weird stories full of deep lore, MAs=meaningless trad adventures" that you assume anything weird or lorish you remember is from an NA. Or maybe you don't, but I certainly do…

>If the Great Old Ones are really the Time Lords from the previous universe, Nyarlathotep is the Other/Doctor figure among them.
The internet "Dr. Nyarlathotep" followers added a bit on to that.

Marc Platt dropped lots of hints that the Other may not have been a Gallifreyan contemporary of Rassilon and Omega. What he wanted to do was turn all of Gallifreyan history into a predestination paradox by having the Other be the Doctor from the future, but he basically chickened out and had the Other just be Leela's baby named after the Doctor, and babies don't know enough to cause any interesting paradoxes.

So, screw Lungbarrow, if the Other really is as mysterious as Platt wanted him to be, what else could he be? One of those Great Old Ones who were the Time Lords from a previous universe, of course. Nyarlathotep isn't just the Other-equivalent from the previous universe, he's also the Other in this universe. And presumably will be in the next, after the Doctor survives the end of this one.

Unless you take fan fiction written by the Dr. Nyarlathotep fans as canon, it's basically just made up. But it's still fun, and doesn't really contradict anything.

>Hinton transcends ranges
Well, from a proper 9+2-dimensional point of view, they're all the same books, it's just that when seen inverted an odd number of times through the 6D Calabi-Yau manifold they appear to be PDAs, while an even number of times they appear to be EDAs.
>>
>>79672561
The Asian chick from Waters of Mars says "It's.. bigger.. I mean, it's bigger on the inside." So she says the actual line.
>>
>>79673173
So you're saying if you take any Doctor Who book and project it into a lower space so the settings are 2-dimensional and the characters are 1-dimensional, it becomes a Gary Russell book?
>>
I dont know if anyone cares but I will drop a scan of the last DWM eventually. I keep getting busier and I struggle to make time for /who/ or Doctor Who these days
>>
>>79672821
It was only about two months actually. I really don't think they'll announce the new Doctor until after series 10 though - Capaldi was announced 4 months before he started at Christmas, so I'm guessing it'll be an August announcement again.
>>
>>79673818
I wouldn't be too surprised at a pretty early reveal, announced to head off a leak. Chibnall doesn't seem nearly as obsessed with secrecy as RTD or Moffat—which I think is probably good in general, but could easily mean he can't keep his next Doctor under wraps once he picks him.
>>
>>79673808
Cheers m8. Appreciate everything you do.

>>79674028
Moffat didn't seem obsessed with spoilers security on any of his earlier shows either, so that may not mean anything.

Because he's one of Mark Gatiss' best friends, and a decent impressionist, and it wasn't a big enough part to do the same kind of search as they did for Hartnell, Lambert, Hussein, etc.?

Please tell me:

Is Doctor Who *supposed* to be schlocky?

It's show about an alien who looks like a human and travels in a blue police box through time and space to Britain / British contryside posing as a distant planet / a BBC studio posing as a distant planet.
It's supposed to be whatever fits, so it depends on who wrote the episode.
But if you're asking whether it's supposed to look cheap - yes it is.
