So /tv/'s favorite director just released a new cut of Ali

> less boxing (only two fights remained uncut)
> more politics
> more Malcom X
> more FBI/CIA hijinks

Just finished it: Turns Ali from one of Mann's least interesting films to one of his better efforts.

Anyone heard whether the Blackhat Directors Cut will ever get a home video release? I saw it at BAM when it premiered and it was a genuine 10/10

Has there ever been a more AESTHETIC director than Mann?
>>
Even though I love Miami Vice and Collateral, Mann's movies looked infinitely better when they were shot on film.

OFFICIAL MICHAEL MANN FILMOGRAPHY RANKING

> 1. Miami Vice (Director's Cut)
> 2. Thief
> 3. The Insider
> 4. Manhunter
> 5. Blackhat (Director's Cut)
> 6. Miami Vice (Theatrical Cut)
> 7. Last of the Mohicans (Director's Cut)
> 8. Heat
> 9. Public Enemies
> 10. Last of the Mohicans (Theatrical Cut)
> 11. LA Takedown
> 12. Blackhat (Theatrical Cut)
> 13. The Jericho Mile
> 14. Collateral
> 15. The Keep

This list is objective fact. Bear in mind that even the worst Mann film is only an 8/10 by normal standards.
>>
>>79639254

Respectfully disagree. Only Collateral is really done a disservice by digital. I thought that Miami Vice was stunning - was really happy to see the same techniques used in Spring Breakers
>>
>>79639367

Fugg, forgot to include Ali in the list. Director's Cut edges out Public Enemies for 9 and is above TJM at 13
>>
>>
>>79639402
>Only Collateral is really done a disservice by digital

why do you think so
>>
>>79639566

I thought the camcorder grittiness they were going for made even interesting shots look ugly, cheap and dated
>>
>>
>>79639367
>la takedown above collateral
lol anyway manhunter is his best,
and what's with all the miami vice dicksucking that goes on online?
>>
>>79639613
some of the scenes look like they were shot on a smartphone
>>
>>79639681

> and what's with all the miami vice dicksucking that goes on online?

It's peak Mann - the culmination of decades of aesthetic study. It also touches on themes that have been present (but not fully realized) in all of his work
>>
>>79639367
I am ok with this.
>>
I already liked Mann but i haven't watched Miami Vice yet

downloading the unrated version right now
>>
>>79639367
fuck

thought he directed silence of the lambs until literally just now wtf

hmm i will have to check it out, i actually havent seen any of this guy's movies except Mohicans, but i was very young at the time.

been meaning to watch Thief though, love tangerine dream and love caan
>>
>>79640975
oh wait actually i did see public enemies in theaters, but i cant remember much from that one either. apparently the dude who shot dillinger irl was my great uncle on my mother's side so my family made a big event out of going to see it
>>
>>79640975
>>79641039

I'd start with Thief - it's one of the most accessible of his films.

Public Enemies can be a bit boring if you're not super into Mann. I really enjoyed how he wasn't afraid to make Dillinger unlikable (after all, a guy who kills people for money probably wouldn't be all that likable in real life either)
>>
>>79641084

Mann directed that turd of a movie?

I walked out half way to be fair but are all his movies bad or just ones with john dep?

I've thought Ali was great since I first watched the Director's cut on DVD (the second director's cut, after the theatrical) but the new, third cut is my favourite. It has a stronger narrative through-line and shortens some of the scenes where interest wanes, mostly the scenes after Ali is barred from boxing. Will Smith is amazing in every version but Mario Van Peebles as Malcolm X seemed even stronger in the new cut. In my top three Mann films.
>>
>>79639367
I wouldn't put either of his tv films (except the Luck pilot) above any of the theatrical ones. They have no visual style, especially L.A. Takedown, which looks like the TV series pilot it was intended to be.
>>
>>79639798
Yet scriptwise and even visualwise it re-uses bits of dialogue, scenes and visuals from both the first season of the tv series and the episode 'Life is Dust' from Robbery Homicide Division. Not a complaint, because I like seeing these re-used lines and scenarios, it's interesting to me. Mann continually refining.
>>
>>79641224

> Mario Van Peebles as Malcolm X seemed even stronger in the new cut

Completely agree, that look of sadness when Ali rejected him in Africa was heartbreaking
>>
>>79641383
And that scene where he is facing the camera talking about how angry he was when a chuch was bombed and the little girls were killed, so angry he became paralyzed, seemed even longer in the new cut.
>>
>>79641383
>You shouldn't have quarrelled with Elijah Muhammad
>>
>>79641354

> the episode 'Life is Dust' from Robbery Homicide Division

I actually haven't seen any episodes of Robbery Homicide - is it good? I heard that the series ended Mann's friendship with Sizemore because of his drug use
>>
What's with the terrible rock songs and shitty sound design in his recent movies?
>>
>>79641559
Robbery Homicide Division is my favourite of Mann's tv work as a producer, so the whole series is worth checking out if you like Mann. All shot on digital video, which gives it an unique aesthetic and immediacy. The Life is Dust episode is basically the Crockett-Isabella plot/subplot from Miami Vice, even down to them washing each other in the shower. Sizemore is a better Al Pacino as Vincent Hanna than Al Pacino himself.
>>
I don't think I've ever seen a Mann film I liked. Public enemies was god awful, black hat was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, the insider was too long, miami vice was pointless, never saw heat or the rest though. Not sure why you guys overrate him so much
>>
>>79641832
It's an internet teenage boy thing.

You should watch Heat, though. Watch Thief too if you liked Heat.
>>
>>79642030
Might watch Thief because I like James Caan. I also saw Collateral but it didn't do much for me. I still can't get over how fucking awful blackhat was.

>Cora Munro: Why were those people living in this defenseless place?

>Hawkeye: After seven years indentured service in Virginia, they headed out here 'cause the frontier's the only land available to poor people. Out here, they're beholden to none. Not living by another's leave.

>Cora Munro: They do not live their lives "by your leave"! They hack it out of the wilderness with their own two hands, bearing their children along the way!
>>
>>79641832
He's on of my favorite directors but Public Enemies wasn't that good. Heat is incredibly overrated, granted it's an amazing film it's not his best. Miami Vice is also really good, like most of his films he creates great atmosphere and if you watch Manhunter it's really his best. Everything comes together in that film to create an incredible ambiance. He truly does a noticeable style and its a good one.

>Chingachgook: The frontier moves with the sun and pushes the Red Man of these wilderness forests in front of it until one day there will be nowhere left. Then our race will be no more, or be not us.

>Hawkeye: That is my father's sadness talking.

>Chingachgook: No, it is true. The frontier place is for people like my white son and his woman and their children. And one day there will be no more frontier. And men like you will go too, like the Mohicans. And new people will come, work, struggle. Some will make their life. But once, we were here.
>>
>>79639367
Holy fuck i hope you're joking
>>
>>79641672
He's always had shitty taste in music. No idea why he keeps ruining the sound design of his films though.
>>
>>79643628
What on earth are you talking about?
>>
>>79643719
It's a pretty straight forward statement. Get some reading comprehension.
>>
>>79643757
It's not the case.
>>
>>79642686

Collateral is Mann's most overrated film
>>
>>79644392

I'll never understand why some people prefer film over Digital, the graininess is just ugly.

Is the Miami Vice movie worth watching?

I'm a huge fan of the show and have just heard mixed things from people and as well heard about all the on set issues with Jamie Foxx.
>>
>>79645245
I watched it the other day and I found it incredibly bland.

None of the characters are interesting and neither is the plot.

Has some really nice shots though, that's about it.
>>
>>79645245
IT IS VERY MUCH WORTH WATCHING

COMPARED TO SHIT LIKE CAPTAIN AMERICA CIVIL WAR
>>
>>79645406
What? What does that mean?
>>
>>79645150

It's not just the "grain"

Digital film is captured differently and is processed differently resulting in something that, well, looks different.
>>
>>79645682

Although a lot of people didn't get Miami Vice from a storytelling perspective, it's one of the best looking films of all time.

CONSIDERING EVERY MORON PLEB ITT WATCHES VAPID CAPESHIT, ANY MICHAEL MANN MOVIE IS UNQUESTIONABLY 'WORTH WATCHING'

probably never because its so niche
but i really fucking want it

Has anyone here seen the new restoration of Heat? Apparently it just got a UK blu-ray release
>>

Can anyone please explain why people love miami vice so much?
