Its the most prestigious award show with a long history. When people are young they dont practice their emmy or grammy speeches, they practice their oscar speeches. Even musicians would rather win an oscar. In fact every award show kind of is build up for it.

Not a very good comparison anon. Rotten tomatoes aggregates reviews from multiple sources. Reviews specifically review the material.
A lot of categories in the Oscars aren't so much for that movie or performance, but because that actor/director got snubbed a few years ago because some other asshole got it for a movie that got snubbed a few years before that.
Its an industry awards show that normies flock to because we all see movies and cant point at things and say "Hey I saw that!" It's not a democratic process, if you want that shit then you want the "People's Choice Award," which is even more weightless than the golden fucking globes.
