So did the War Doctor actually....fight? You know, like blow shit up and destroy Daleks? I remember it being said a long time ago that the Doctor led the Time Lords into battle, but then in Heaven Sent they say he was always unarmed.
>>
>>79631600
Any details?
>>
>>79631940
my headcanon for as much as it matters is that the young War Doctor, or "Warrior", did fight in the war rather viciously. All the horrible things he does, leading people into battle, the oncoming storm etc. but hardened as the war kept going and going and going.

The War Doctor we see in the 50th seems very weary. I doubt he was like that the entire time.
>>
>>79631940

Seems like that got retconned.

He doesn't even fight in the Big Finish audios.
>>
>>79631940
you can fight without weapons
that makes him scarier imo
the fact that he didn't need to use them means he probably had even worse ways of doing things.
>>
>>79632082
but what the fuck would that even be
>>
>>79631940
He would just frown at a Dalek and they would die of fright
>>
>>79631940
>I remember it being said a long time ago that the Doctor led the Time Lords into battle,

It was also said that the end of the Time War was incomphrensible and the Time Lords had become just as warlike and horrific as the Daleks. Yet in the 50th we see them pew pewing at eachother and lots of time lord kiddies running around in market squares with very reasonable and well measured commanders.

Moffat neutered the Time War.
>>
>>79632056
>>79632082
Define fighting.
I cant imagine whatever you are talking about. How did he fight? With his intelligence? Isn't he fighting all the time then?
>>
>>79632141
>Moffat neutered the Time War.

>>
>>79632141
>>79632194
>Moffat neutered the Time War
It was been established that it was a different faction of Time Lords.
>>
>>79632394
Explain
>>
>>79632194
There's actually an interview with Moffat during like Series 5 when he says he thinks if they show The Time War on TV it would be disappointing like The Clones War. Not sure why he changed his mind. I guess he wanted the thing with the painting. It was kind of cool in the theater I guess.
>>
>>79632194
I agree.
For a decade we knew next to nothing about the Time War. We'd hear vague statements from the Doctor — that he burned Gallifrey, that he faced names that invoked a sense of horror, a sense of mystery, and a sense of Machiavellian, Lovecraftian terror (Nightmare Child, Could've Been King, Meanwhiles and Neverweres and the Skaro Degradations).

And in our heads, in a cloud of mystery, it was so much better. But then the 50th comes along, and Moffat has only so much to play with, so of course he's gonna pick the Time War, and he can't get Chris back, so he creates a man who actually fought in the War, and he centers the episode around it. But it's like losing your virginity. Sex is great, but it's never as good as you thought it was gonna be as a horny teenager jacking off three times a day. What it was in your mind was way better.

And do you know what the most ironic thing of all is? Moffat's era is the Fairy Tale era, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but the man who wrote fairy tales told a story about one of the most mystical, most unequivocal facts of the Whoniverse, and he made it corporeal, real, and solid.
>>
>>79630686
I wish, we'll never get rid of Gatiss.
>>
>>79632737
>Sex is great, but it's never as good as you thought it was gonna be
I never understand why people say this. Agreed with everything else though.
>>
>>79632929
Maybe your libido was lower than mine. At least you get the comparison
>>
War saved Gallifrey, then regenerated.

10 saved Gallifrey, then went to his regeneration story.

11 saved Gallifrey, then went to his regeneration story.

Prediction: Series 10 episode 12 will end with Capaldi's eye shot from the 50th
>>
Run like hell because you always need to
Laugh at everything, because it's always funny
>>
>>79632141
>Moffat neutered the Time War.
As with so much else, he was just ripping off the EDAs.

In Alien Bodies, physical battles are irrelevant, because the war has shifted to conceptual grounds, and it's all about establishing one version of the other of the Web of Time as the cultural process of history for the universe's inhabitants.

In Interference and Dead Romance, the War involves force-regenerating soldiers to turn them into unkillable spiky monsters to win battles. Kinda cool, but not at all what we were promised.

In The Ancestor Cell, the War is basically The Invasion of Time, except the Doctor can't actually stop it this time, he's just got a big button that he can use to destroy the planet and wipe out all three factions.
>>
The War Doctor was a mistake.
>>
>>79633181
Of course RTD's initial vision of the Time War wasn't as cool as Miles' initial vision, and Moffat's final version wasn't even as cool as Cole & Anghelides' final version.

He could have at least shown us that the Dalek assault on Gallifrey's present opened the door for them to assault Gallifrey's history by having the founders of the Time Lords vanish from memory one by one, changing the Panopticon geometry as they do so, so it's still worthy of being called a "time" war.

The Power of the Daleks animation is a decent place to start.
Enemy of the World is good but drags a bit near the end.
The Moonbase is a good base under siege story. With some iconic Cyberman moments
>>
>>79633867
Mind Robber
The Invasion
Power of the Daleks
Tomb of the Cybermen
The War Games

Power and part of Invasion are missing, so you have to be able to tolerate either crappy animation or telesnap recons.

Your sensitivity to padding will also affect Invasion and War Games. At least Invasion's padding is mostly fun stuff that's different from most other classic Who, but War Games is traditional padding, and a huge amount of it. If you can put up with that, the rest of the story is brilliant.

Every regeneration outside of the TARDIS had to be induced by a third party.

>The Doctor hasn't died outside out of the TARDIS since the 8th Doctor. Why not?
He just needs to go to America more. Seven got shot and died outside the TARDIS there. Eleven got shot and died outside the TARDIS there but it turned out to be a ruse. If you want to get shot and die outside your home, you go to America.

Because New Who is incredibly formulaic and they're always scared to try something different.

I wish they just let 11 regenerate as an old man on top of the tower and have Clara discover 12 in the TARDIS. Hope 12 goes out differently. Maybe they could have him regenerate as he's walking or crawling towards the TARDIS.

>>79634903
They overdo the post-regeneration stuff in New Who to the point where it becomes insufferable. Was good in Eleventh Hour though.

Except every time he regenerates in his TARDIS he crashes it so what even is the point
I do not want another regeneration where the Doctor's first words are "ooh *new body part* uh oh can't fly the TARDIS lol"
>>
Wouldn't Mummy on the Orient Express be a GOAT regeneration story? Say the Mummy has chosen Clara as the next victim, there's no way out. Except if someone's willing to die quicker. The Doctor shoots himself and starts regenerating: the mummy senses his sickness and targets him. While dying and slowly regenerating in 66 seconds, the Doctor saves Clara by finding out what the mummy is and stopping it. Everyone is safe, except the Doctor who's now in the final stage of regeneration. A quick goodbye to Clara and... the new one comes springing.

A while back he DID say that he "wanted to be remembered as one of the Doctors" or something.
But it was probably just to get people off his back. Maybe he'll spend the last of his Thor 2 money soon and begrudginly do one Big Finish story.

Couldn't agree more with this.
I REALLY hope they go back to the subtle changes with this new regeneration cycle. Eleven blowing up the ship was massive and destructive, but the actual change to Twelve was a quick flash.

>>79635185
>But it was probably just to get people off his back. Maybe he'll spend the last of his Thor 2 money soon and begrudginly do one Big Finish story.
It'll be one of those multi-companion stories, where Rose and Jack go off and have an adventure where they run into Turlough and Tegan, and Five has only one line at the start and Nine only one line at the end, and he'll record his line over the phone from Hollywood, and people will still get excited over it.

Seriously, why is slowpoke Chibnall the new showruiner and not Gatiss who would jump on the show like a fly on shit?
>>
>>79635275
What I really want is a mid-adventure regeneration, where there's no time for a farewell tour or anything because the Doctor was halfway through his plan to stop the whoevers' evil plan and the clock is still ticking, so we get to see how the new Doctor is different by watching how the same plan changes with a new Doctor in charge.
>>
>>79635413
>Seriously, why is slowpoke Chibnall the new showruiner and not Gatiss who would jump on the show like a fly on shit?
Because Gatiss can't cast himself as the Doctor, but Chibs can cast him.
>>
>>79635413
I honestly think he has been given the chance already and declined.
>>
>>79635474
That would be rad, but kind of a disservice to the previous Doctor if he doesn't get to finish it.
It could be done as a surprise two-parter, where the Doctor solves the problem in one time period, regenerates, and then has to fight the threat in another time period right after as a new man.
They could do a mid-story Master regeneration though. It'd be cool to see how his evil plan changes from man to man.
>>
>>79635474
They probably wouldn't do that in the new series, lots of people would feel cheated that their Doctor didn't get an emotional goodbye

>That would be rad, but kind of a disservice to the previous Doctor if he doesn't get to finish it.
If he gets to come up with the plan and do a truly heroic sacrifice in the middle of it, I don't think people would see it as a disservice. (Obviously it depends on how well it's written and acted, but that's always true.)

>It could be done as a surprise two-parter, where the Doctor solves the problem in one time period, regenerates, and then has to fight the threat in another time period right after as a new man.
You've not only improved my idea, you've just written the best cliffhanger of NuWho.

>They could do a mid-story Master regeneration though. It'd be cool to see how his evil plan changes from man to man.
Actually, I got the idea from the fact that First Frontier was originally going to do that, until he decided that making the Master a surprise was more important, so there was no room to have Ace shoot him in the middle of his plan and see him adapting it.
>>
>>79635655
>They probably wouldn't do that in the new series, lots of people would feel cheated that their Doctor didn't get an emotional goodbye
I think those kinds of fans got more catharsis out of Eleven's postmortem phone call to Clara than his actual goodbye. Especially since they'd already done the whole "farewell tour" thing for his fake death and couldn't do it again for the real one. And there are lots of other ideas they could use to give 12 (or whoever) his emotional sendoff.

I think that it had everything to do with Doctor Who.

You take a man who's spent his entire life travelling, being a bohemian who never really had a place to settle down. Finally, he finds the greatest staple of settlement — a woman. But he, physically, can never have that sort of a life, and as he goes on with her, he puts himself under the delusion that he might just be able to have it. Here, he realizes that he never really can, and we move on from a romance that essentially only lasted for one series. Sure, it reverberated beyond that one series, but it was still short-lived and shouldn't be moaned about as being "not Doctor Who."
>>

Witch Familiar / Sorcerer Apprentice were highly mediocre.
If there's Michelle Gomez that doesnt mean that it's automatically good.
Davros parts were okay, but Moffat leaves too much questions.

UtL/BtF were fine siege under base episodes.
It loses miserably to impossible planet though.

Ashildr episodes were waste
The most boring and stupid writing of a immortal character. First part is better.

Zygon Inversion / Zygon Invasion
Except for the speech it's just bad writing honestly. Sontaran Strategem / Poison Sky tier. Did you like those episodes?

Sleep no More
Obligatory Gatiss episode, even slightly worse this time

Face the Raven
It was fine and pretty solid

Heaven Sent
Probably best episode of Moffat era

Hell Bent

Did you know:

1) Cold Blood was originally meant to be much better, with more backstory, with a dinosaur, more Silurian city, and in the end it was just pretty much improvising based on a budget

Then there were a few things in the edit of Cold Blood that we lost for time, which I worried about. They cut the really crucial moment of Mo confronting Malohkeh about his torture, before waking up Elliott, which for me felt really important and I’m sad we lost. That explained lots more about Malohkeh, his back-story and motivation, and it resolved how he and Mo and the Doctor could all be standing together, given what Malohkeh’s doing at the end of the first episode. The framing device of Cold Blood was entirely different at script and shooting stage, it was from Amy’s point of view, more emotional, about the loss of Rory. The episode starts with the Doctor holding her in the TARDIS, telling her to remember, just after Rory’s died, and we go into flashback and the episode is presented as a memory until we catch up with them again at that point. There was none of the Silurians’ narration; I preferred it being about Amy, it felt more intimate, more personal, but then I would say that! And across both episodes quite a lot of small character moments went, all for understandable reasons: pace and time.

We don’t think Moffat’s first series has the consistency of his second.

I’m not sure I agree with that. I think these things often come down to the vagaries of production. The Beast Below is probably one of Steven’s best ever scripts, and the production of it was so not what was in the script. I remember watching that and thinking, ‘Oh,’ because it’s a really beautiful, operatic visual piece of writing. It’s bigger than The End of the World, but actually the way the visuals went, something wasn’t quite right on the production of that. The tone of it is odd as well, the tone of it is not the tone of the script. And tone is something that often goes unrecognised as a key component in things. I think it’s always fascinating. I really vividly remember reading that, because I read The Eleventh Hour and thought that was extraordinary and really hurtles along, and then I thought he did something new in The Beast Below, and I think he probably doesn’t look on it that fondly but I think that actually, if he published that script at whatever it was, first or second draft, it was a really beautiful piece of writing.
>>
There's literally nothing wrong with The Beast Below. It baffles me that people keep saying it's shit.

Working on Torchwood must have been an amazing experience.

It was a real once-in-a-lifetime thing. Julie Gardner said, “Come and have a drink,” and we went to this Private Members’ Club in London and she said, “We have to sit in the corner because there’s this secret thing.” It was like all executive producers always do: “I have a secret thing to tell you; it’s very important.” And then in this case... She said, “We’re going to do a 9 o’clock spin-off of Doctor Who. Do you want to do it?” and I said, “What?” That was really out of the blue, really unexpected. There was no sense that there were going to be spin-offs. She just said, “We’re going to do a show, a spin-off of Doctor Who, it’s going to be featuring Captain Jack, it’s going to be much more grown-up.” So that was the first I’d heard of it, and that took me really by surprise. She said, “You can’t tell anyone. There’s a page, that Russell’s written, and that’s it.” I stumbled out thinking, ‘What on Earth are they going to do?’ and then a day later the page showed up.

And you think just having Colin Baker instead of Matt Smith will somehow mean you get everything you loved about classic Who?

Who's going to write, direct, and produce these stories? Do you know of some genius out there who has the talent to do 70s-style pacing and also make tasteful and inventive use of CGI that the rest of us haven't heard of?

If not, I'd rather stick with Big Finish, who are already doing that. Not all of their stories are brilliant, but far more than the one per year you're offering.
>>
>>79638243
Guess what, people sonetimes have different opinions.
>>
Initially, Torchwood took a lot of flak from Doctor Who fans.

That’s why you can’t go on the internet, that’s why you can’t get involved, because you have to be writing for another reason, you have to be writing because you want to.

After the first Torchwood went out, I had a look at a couple of reviews – of Russell’s episode – and I just thought, ‘I don’t agree. It’s not the intended audience.’ That was the point where I thought, ‘You’re not going to gain anything from reading this stuff.’ If they’re going to be like that about Russell, who is a really extraordinary writer and this is seven years ago when I had far fewer credits – I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to be sniper-fire.’ The great thing about Doctor Who is, the best writers in the country run it. Russell is a genius of a writer, and Steven is. I don’t use that word lightly, they both are. I’ve worked with them both pretty closely, and they are both geniuses in very different and very similar ways.

Literally the first dinner I had with Russell, and I hadn’t agreed to do the job, the first thing he said to me was, “If you come and do this, you must never go on-line ever again. It doesn’t matter whether you write brilliant stuff or shit stuff or whatever, it will destroy you.” I think he gave that piece of advice to everyone. I think he gave it to David [Tennant], he gave it to John Simm, he gave it to everyone. I think it’s part of the territory now.

Series 9 didn't know where it was going. Did they want an arc or not? Did the Doctor even care? He was basically like "I don't know what the hybrid is" even when no one was watching up until Heaven Sent where he confessed he knew who it was and he wasn't lying so what we're they trying to do here? Plus there was no real pay off.

Aside from the shit 5, 6, 9, stories were weak (Before the Flood notably), slow (The Magician's Apprentice), 2, 6 and 11 were just hour-long conversations.

It's not that I don't like hearing Peter go full ASMR but it was just too much and padded episodes (especially 6).

Series 5, 6 and 8 had a few scenes revealing more about the arc every few episodes.

Series 7 had the Impossible girl arc neatly developed every episode.

Series 9 had what? The Doctor faking surprise "Woah... it's like... a hybrid" twice in 12 episodes. Also, we literally never saw Clara take risks and be a daredevil except of course in the episode she died in.

He was like "she's a hybrid" about Ashildr and told Osgood "you're like... a hybrid" with a concerned face like they were the hybrid. If he knew the hybrid was him why did he fake those reactions to people who didn't even know about the hybrid prophecy?

I said especially in The Woman Who Lived.

And yes, it was developed in every episode. Never said it was developed in a good way, just said they actually put some effort to try and fit the arc in the episodes.

Chris Chibnall: I’d come up through theatre. Doctor Who fans aren’t going to know that, but I’d had an attachment to the National Theatre Studio, a year’s residence and a play produced at Soho Theatre, another at Southwark Playhouse, and one play that ran for three months in Paris and was produced around the world – still is. So I’d come up through that route rather than coming up through Big Finish or the novels.

By the point I came onto Torchwood, I’d written twenty hours of television, I’d worked with Julie on Life on Mars, and I’d got four seasons of what was a big hit for BBC1 with Born and Bred.

>I'm sure somewhere out there somebody's been waiting their whole life for it, yeah.
Well, if your whole plan is "There must be some genius out there who could make something amazing, let's just close our eyes and hope he exists", sure. In fact, I'd like to let any such geniuses make whatever they want, no need to restrict them to updated-classic-Who.

>'I work in the administration department of the administration department of the BBC Administration Department. I can confirm that this every word of Private Eye's report is true. I can also confirm that Steven Moffat threw the contents of a cup of tea (tea) at Caro Skinner as she was leaving the office.'

>just said they actually put some effort to try and fit the arc in the episodes
Honestly, that was the only thing I didn't like about S9.

S9 was supposed to be a season without an arc story. And that would have been fine. Whether Moffat succumbed to worrying about people like the other anon saying "But it's not Doctor Who without muh season arc!" or he just decided The Woman Who Lived was so amazing that he had to expand it to cover the whole season, it was a mistake.

I still love the series, but it would have been better if they'd just left most of the episodes untouched by Ashildr and the Hybrid thing. Heaven Sent would have worked just as well if the Hybrid hadn't been mentioned until FtR. And FtR could have worked just as well without Ashildr.
>>
>>79638912
Ashildr ruined Series 9.
>>
>>79638743
>it was developed in every episode
Wasn't it basically ignored until the finale? I only remember it really factoring into the plot in Journey and it was retconned.
>>
>>79638954
They mentioned it in literally every episode.
>>
Lets play a game

Guess about which episode this post is:

I personally really liked it, but I talked with a couple of people at church today who I know watch it and they both hated the episode. One described it as 'a load of pretentious twaddle.' Another said the show had become too self-referential and it should focus more on just being scary.
>>
>>79639174
I don't like this game. I'm going to sit this one out, if that's okay.

It's gotta be Heaven Sent. Normies can't recognise kino.

Episode 1 of The Crusade.

No aliens, no monsters, inside jokes about the actors' other roles in other stories earlier in the season, Barbara telling Saphadin the stories of season 1 as her 1001 Arabian Nights bit…

Hell Bent. Cunts.

wut
>>
>>79639389
He's obviously using "plot devices" in the /who/-specific sense where only RTD deus ex endings and Moffat timey-wimey count as plot devices.
>>
>>79639214
Correct.
Next one is going to be multiple reactions to one episode:

my 5 and a half year old said "mum can i watch something else" half way through

My wife thought it was a "nice story" but there wasn't enough "alien stuff" in it. She's now asking me if Dr Who always has to have aliens in it?! Also, she thought the alien was "crap".

My mum loved it! Admittedly, she did fall asleep about ten minutes in, but I quickly poked her to make sure she woke up! Anyway, she said that it was the best episode of the series so far

No, it's a preexisting Japanese word for pictograms (and often logograms besides kanji). NTT did try to trademark it anyway, but they were rejected.

>>
>>79645949
it's okay. some interesting ideas, but it's kind of repetitive and by the last time they wake up it almost feels like a parody. also nothing really solved the plot. they didn't do anything new to defeat the dreamcrabs, they just happened to wake up for real
>>
>>79645998
Actually they still haven't woken up and all of series 9 was an incredibly PIGSHIT dream produced by Clara's dying brain. Luckily the Doctor freed himself offscreen between Hell Bent and The Husbands of River Song, but Clara's dead. This is absolutely, 100% true canon.

>What’s next for Chris Chibnall?

>The Great Train Robbery, for BBC1, for later this year, hopefully. We’re doing two ninety-minute films; it’s World Productions, the team who did United. We start shooting quite soon. I’m really excited about it.

So he's not taking a 'holiday' after Broadchurch 3. He's working on something else before starting work on Doctor Who series 11.

I'm getting a good feeling about Chibnall. I don't know why - I just think I trust him with Who. I'm more worried about the next Doctor really.

Just lucky Billie Piper isn't in control of that decision.

>>79646419
I'd trust him with my balls. Like, gently placing them in his cupped hand. He could crush them if he wanted, but I don't think he would. I wouldn't even be concerned.

As for the show, I'm not sure. He might fuck it up.
>>
>>79646512
Ah, a true fan, more concerned about the show than his own balls.

This is why Doctor Who fans aren't allowed in sensitive positions.

"Sir, we've tried everything. We tortured him, we drugged him, he tortured his daughter in front of his face, he won't crack."

"We shall see. So, Mr. Nonymous, you won't tell us what you know? What if we were to cast Mark Gatiss as the next Doctor?"

"What? No, you monster! I'll talk, I'll give you the codes, anything, just not that!"
