I think that episode was directed by Lynch. If it was, Lynch tends to put seemingly "random" things into his films in order to elicit an emotional reaction. The repetitive endless sounds of the tennis balls add to the sense of frustration and anger the protagonists are feeling

It's not really "lolrandom" cause Lynch stuff always has a dreamlike sensibility, the absurdity is part of the fun
