What season had Homer mauled by the badger or when Bart befriended the old, western movie star? That's when I stopped giving a shit as it was coming out on a weekly basis.

I miss the old and moody realism stories the early seasons had. Now it just seems to be nothing but pop culture references or latching onto the latest trend.
>>
Never. Guess what? In it's current state its still better than 80% of current tv

>Yeah, the plot's a little "out there", but that's been the mark of golden age simpsons that set it apart from the first few seasons.

The mark of golden era simpsons was very well written wit built upon the backs of a relatable average family who isnt perfect. Real life situations that everyone has seen happen in their friends or their own life built up with a bit of humorous hyperbole.

Let me guess, homer shoving the crayon up his nose was pretty funny too?

I don't even know what the fuck they were going for with this episode. Somehow, Lisa accidentally makes a sentient AI then frees him. It was so absurd and stupid but not in a whacky, funny way. Like the first half of the episode I wasn't even sure if they were going for a "girls can be hackers and coders too!" or if it was some kind of anti-feminist statement against the female coders acting like cunts, but then it completely abandons that idea in the second half.

It was a complete mess, like if 10 different writers worked on the episode, and then they tried their best to include everybody's ideas.

I didnt say realistic, I said repeatable with hyperbole.

The overarching stories hit on everyday situations and problems that everyone has faced.
There is a reason that a fucking cartoon got so many families watching and loving it. And its not because it was so randumb (years before randumb humor was popular)

Are you not old enough to recognize how relevant most of the stories were?

I like a lot of the wacky episodes of that period, the jokes are still mainly good and it's got a fair dose of nostalgia for me.

But there was definitely a sea change in their approach to story in the writing in season 9 that turned a lot of people off, and moved away from the schmaltzy "heart" the early show was based upon (which you can only mine so often before it gets stale).

They had to either get crazier, or start ageing the characters, or they would have run out of material. Given the money the show was making stopping was unthinkable.

About 1997. It used to have phenomenal writing, much like Bob's Burgers today, it was witty and it had an edge but it also had a compelling narrative. Now it has neither. And it hasn't for about 20 years. It is a husk of it's former glory....

From the 2nd season through to about the 9th it was phenomenol. It started out as cheap badly drawn shock humor that hasn't aged well, but it very quickly ironed that out and became clever.... but this only lasted like one or two batches of writers and then it turned into mediocre safe humor for grandmas.

Either that or other shows that were taking off like Beavis and Butthead or South Park, in particular, which pushed the envelope further and made Simpsons obsolete.

Now, I have no idea who still watches it. Most fans dropped off at like '97 with maybe a few lingering till after the millenium. I don't know anyone that watches it anymore. Most have moved on to Family Guy, Bob's Burgers (best of these comedy shows), American Dad, or South Park (also a shadow of it's former glory, good and watchable still though, just not legendary like it once was).

You see here in latin america, Simpsons were always dubbed in Mexican spanish. the actors making the voices were ridiculously famous for their iconic roles, the're loved all over south america, there's a real love and care towards the voices. you just dont watch the Simpsons in english, it's not natural

until 2005, actors had an internal strike with their studio, the problem was not resolved, and fox ordered that they just hired other actors.
the result: the show dropped quality to the ground people was just disgusted to hear another voice, it was just not the same

that's when they died for me

Personally I think the best ending point is the New York episode, even though a few memorable ones come afterwards, principally because it ended with them driving off into the sunset, returning to Springfield, but it's also good because it's a story focusing entirely on the main cast and the jokes work without extensive knowledge of the characters.
Pre 9-11 nostalgia and the affectionate but not ass-licking portrayal of New York also made the episode a stand-out, much better than the other "travel episodes".

Especially considering it was season 4 (with I think a holdover episode aired in 5) so it was years before any decline. Also Conan came up with the name "Chub-Chub" and found it bizarrely hilarious (as in would disrupt writing sessions from laughing so hard his own "joke") so there's that

>>
>>79623825
That's unfortunate. Because us Britbongs are poverty stricken ITV used to show repeats of the Simpsons in the late 90s-mid 00s and it was solely the golden age stuff from the early 90s. That meant it never felt like many of us had missed out on it despite not having been born in the 80s.
>>
Season 12 is the last season that I own. Premiere of season 21 is the last new episode that I've seen.

I'd divide them like this

1-2 old style
3 transition
4-6 golden age
7 transition
8-10 more good than bad, starting to show cracks
11-12 noticeable decline
>>
>>79626559
Yeah, it's strange but The Simpsons has a much stronger cultural presence in Britain, Ireland & Australia because those golden episodes were aired over and over again on a daily basis

99.9% of the simpson's profile was from how it would occasionally, in a completely light and toothless fashion, criticize modern mainstream culture. Also how it would use the animated format to lightly rub up against the boundaries of humor.

So, yes, southpark was a complete and total replacement of the simpsons.

It really wasn't a single episode. I think it was around 2003/2004, the free fall in quality was already in full effect so I just gradually withdrew from it. I'd catch the odd episode here and there over the years, but never in the consistent fashion as I had done since the late 90s when I was a kid.

But there was a point where I turned a corner and decided to never watch a 'new' episode again. That was the 'grunge' episode. For something I hadn't really been a fan of for over a decade, seeing that episode alone made me so angry.

which season had the first episode with a scene in the beginning, where the family drives in the car, and homer goes off a bridge or something/in the river, and drives on the bottom of the waters, by some eels and comical clams or some shit? Maybe even a mermaid? It was like in the first minute I think.

We used to watch simpsons in the family, and I remember when I saw this episode of the new season, I felt the style, the jokes, the feel, the type of humor, everything was totally different. Its like watching a bad Impy & Chipy episode, nothing made sense anymore, the characters personality totally changed.
There were a lot of bs before that season, but it still had good Simpsons moment and solid humor. But this was unbearable.
