In the new Star Trek movies, how was Nero a bad guy? He was great, and Eric Bana was amazing in the role.

I watched the movie just for Bana and was not disappointed.

In case you're actually this pleb there's a great exchange between Sisko and Bashir in "Past Tense" that I interpret as pretty much the mission statement of the series, talking about how well and righteous the perfection of the Federation and Starfleet could hold up when their core values are challenged and threatened.

Marina Sirtis offered the following regarding Roddenberry’s opposition to the concept for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: “The truth is that if Gene had been alive, DS9 would have never been made, because he absolutely said “no” to it when it was presented to him. He said ‘Star Trek is about exploring space, it’s not about a hotel in space.’ So, it would never have happened.”

Majel Barrett criticized the Dominion War in a letter published in Star Trek Communicator, claiming that Gene Roddenberry would have never approved of a continuing war in a Star Trek series. Rick Berman has espoused similar sentiments, noting that his opposition "was all based purely on the fact that Gene had been very specific to me about not wanting Star Trek to be a show about intergalactic wars, interspecies wars. He didn't want it to be about humans fighting wars against other species." Responding to the former, Ronald Moore admitted, "She's probably right. It would've been very hard to argue Gene into going this way and maybe he'd have never gone for it."

>TAKEI: The people that really understand and love STAR TREK are no longer there. When Gene Roddenbery passed, that really was the end of STAR TREK, as we knew it. The series that came on immediately after was DEEP SPACE NINE, which was the polar opposite of Gene’s philosophy and vision of the future, so STAR TREK lost it’s way then and now the people at Paramount are all new people. Herb Solow who was the executive in charge of Desilu Studios is now a professor in Wales. We became very good friends and we had dinner with him and his wife before they left, and when I was in London last year I saw an article about a Professor Herb Solow! [Laughs] But, basically the people now at the studio have absolutely no connection with STAR TREK as we knew it, sadly.

Oh boo hoo, doesn't change the fact that it's objectively the best in the franchise. Besides, even though Gene got sperged out about his perfect vision at first I think he could've grown to appreciate DS9 for what it is. He needed to step away for the franchise to reach it's full potential.

Imagine being Tucker in that decon room and having to be all like "damn, T'pol, you fuckin' fine, all sexy with your tight body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally have sex with you, both as a civilian and as an officer." when all he really wants to do is fuck another 16 year old alien qt in some ship. Like seriously imagine having to be Tucker and not only sit in that chair while T'pol flaunts her disgusting body in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing her vascular stomach and just sit there, mission after mission, hour after hour, touching her disgusting skin. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fucking visage but her haughty attitude as everyone on Enterprise tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, T'POL LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and touch her mannish fucking gremlin face, with that gay fucking look where she's supposed to be unemotional, but just looks like a fucking bitch day in and day out. You've been fucking nothing but a healthy diet of alien princesses and xenosupermodels for your ENTIRE CAREER AS A STARFLEET OFFICER coming straight out of the boonies in Florida. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on her dimpled stomach as she sucks it in to writhe it suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and touch her "statuesque (for that is what she calls herself)" beauty, the beauty she worked so hard for with Vulcan officers in some god-forsakes Vulcan academy . And then the captain calls for another mission, and you know you could kill every single person in the bridge before the security could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Tucker. You're not going to lose your future fleet career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Marketing executives know it's the most famous because every sketch show since the 60s has parodied it at some point so they figure it will attract normies as well as Trekkies.
>>
>>79594005
It's frustrating being a fan born in the 90's where there were 5 iterations of Trek. It's like we've been left behind as they pander to normies who only know Kork 'n' Spork and KHAAAAN from all the epic maymays.
Merchandising too; except for the Starships Collection which makes ships from every series, the action figures, novels, Hallmark ornaments, and plush toys are extremely limited to TOS.

Daily Reminder that The Prophets were not Gods and didn't give a single shit about Bajorans:

They used the phrase "We are of Bajor" but never explained this, given the context it was probably the name for where they existed and the stupid ridge heads got the name from a hallucination caused by their time-tech probes they were using to find other 4D lifeforms and were misinterpreted as religious relics.

The only thing they ever cared about was winning their Civil War against a faction of Prophets known as Pah Wraiths. Every action they took to intentionally interfere with mortals was to either win the civil war directly, as in your picture, or to keep their super-weapon in the fight alive (The Sisko).

Agreed, except the first 4 season are shit. DS9 somehow managed to have worse episodes through its run than any other Trek show.

DS9 is worst Trek. Its mostly awful. Horrible actors. Very little, to no development for half the cast.

The only saving grace are all the heavy makeup actors are actually great, love them all.

Ok fine, you can watch them after the series is over. But take a break and consider them a bonus. If you watch them right after TNG you'll be disappointed. Wait until you're half way through Voyager and want to kill yourself, then they'll seem a breath of fresh air by comparison.

TNG had a surprising amount of character development despite being an episodic show.

TOS characters morphed because they were literally inventing the lore as they want.
>>
>>79602641
I agree, but I would argue that they had less than DS9.

Yes, it had. Picard, Data, Beverly, Wesley, Barclay and Troi all changed during the series.
>>
>>79602755
>What's with all the shifty klingon episodes?
The writers wanted to go with more Dominion stories, but the studio ordered them to pause the Dominion stuff and focus on Klingons for a bit.

>Why is Worf such a baby defying Odo every chance he gets as if he's a capable chief of security? The Enterprise got invaded almost every episode
When you reach the episode "Bar Association", Odo will call out Worf on being a bratty little baby in charge of the shitty security on the Enterprise.

TNG.

Worf changed ranks, strong Klingon development
Riker's character changed completely around season 2.5
That's her name died
Data branched out to a lot of different aspects, but usually reverted back
Wesley literally grew up on the show
Geordie turned into a beta
Barcley introduced, and stuck around in Voyager
Troy was always the same useless cunt, but at least she had different outfits
Picard, cant say much, but he had the most interesting character, and best acting.

DNG...
Sisko does not change, just accepts becoming Emissary.
Jake is annoying cunt who becomes a shitty writer
o'Briend is a punching bag the entire time
Bashire only becomes less annoying
That's it.

Only exception are heavy makeup characters with not enough screen time.

>Thank God rottenberry died and the episodic moral posturing humans are perfect in everyday vision died with him.

You do realise Roddenberry had no influence over TNG right?

He was shut out totally after a couple of seasons, which is why the first 2 seasons are childish sex-obsessed camp trash in comparison to the mature sci-fi that followed season 3 and on.

TNG succeeded despite Roddenberry, the first season was just old TOS scripts he had banging around.

Only retards, /pol/ and reddit hate her. She helped jump start character development for both Worf and Data who before her, were just used a token minority charters.

She's also the only doctor who tries to do her job in trying to save extras when. Like the time they ran into that alien who didn't know what the concept of death was so he decided to kill the black helmsmen by having the replicators no longer being able to produce fired chicken. Pulaski is right there and what does she do? Does just do a quick scan, put her finger on his neck and declare he's dead? Fuck no, she does a scan, and immediately uses her hypospray. When that doesn't have an affect, she then uses another substance, then a third one before finally declaring he's dead.

That's 3 times more attempts than those incompetent fucks like Crusher or the Doctor ever did. Bashir tried a few times, but that's it.

Gene wanted to revive the Spock/McCoy feuding. So they had Pulaski have utter contempt for Data's existence and trying to do anything to get a reaction out of him. Which made that fact that they developed an actual relationship where Data became a confidant for Pulaski all the better.

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before teleporting him into space.

>>79593628
Let's not pretend that Roddenberry's word was gospel and that every idea he had was brilliant.

TNG suffered in it's first two seasons when by mandate they couldn't write personal conflict between the characters and the movies got better when they started ignoring his ideas and began to use more naval style battles.

Action and conflict are necessary in drama and I don't think anyone would argue that TNG or the films sullied the series humanist message.

As for Deep Space Nine, would people have tuned in for another show about space exploration at the same time as Next Generation? I seriously doubt it. Did we want another series where the Federations morals were never wrong and always succeeded?

War has been a part of the Star Trek universe since it's inception. They mention war with the Klingons and the Romulans in the past tense in TOS and they speak of the Cardassian war in the same way in TNG. Why not have a series set in one of these wars?

It makes it more fascinating to see the Federations ideals challenged in a more consequential way rather than just resolving every problem in an hour. Humans have achieved peace and tolrance on their world but that doesn't mean every race will be so enlightened.

And it's not like Voyager didn't have more than it's fair share of moral grey areas.

DS9 saved the Ferengi and made them fan favourites.

They also expanded the Cardassians in really interesting ways. The episode where O'brien goes through a Cardassian trial is one of my favourites.

Not to mention they three great new races from the Gamma quadrant. Changelings, Vorta and Jem H'Dar. All interesting in their own right.

The bland crew and uninteresting alien species was why I've never finished Voyager.
>>
>>79606058
There weren't any writers in common, the conspiracy theory B5 fans are pushing is that the script for B5 was submitted to Paramount who rejected it but then Paramount told Rick Berman and Michael Piller to write a new Star Trek show and gave them all the plot points of B5, then they wrote it, filmed it and broadcast it before B5 had a chance.

Everyone involved denies it, which proves it.
>>
>>79606058

J. Michael Straczynski wrote B5 long before there was either show. In trying to get it made he pitched it to paramount, which turned him down.

Then magically 9001 similar plot points appear in their new startrek show.
>>
>>79606216
It is a *fact* that Paramount was given the B5 bible, treatment, sample screenplay, and artwork. This is not open to dispute; we have the paperwork from the Paramount development execs.

It is a *fact* that Paramount and WB were both trying to launch networks at the same time, UPN and PTEN, and that there is a *fierce* competition between them that has been well and widely documented, enough so that Paramount would have a vested interest in attempting to co-opt anything that Warner Bros. was doing. One way to do this (enter supposition stage left) would be to put out their *own* space station series, under the ST banner, which would hopefully undercut the other show and drive it (and PTEN) out of the marketplace.

It is a *fact* that the development of ANY TV show for a studio is guided by that studio's development execs.

It is a *fact* that the two pilots for DS9 and B5 are extremely similar on major, non-generic points. It is also a fact that the two diverge quite a bit therafter, showing that the writers there were capable of doing their own stuff, putting us back again at the studio level.

From day one, Paramount has done everything conceivable to subvert, sabotage, and drive this show out of the market short of firing a LAWS rocket into the middle of stage A. They hate us over there, because they want to have the exclusive lock on space SF. So yeah, I'm quite willing to believe that they could've decided to co-opt our format...and it almost worked, too, when WB wondered if the market could sustain two space station series.

The only one I take issue with is the idea that TOS had good character development.

We got to know Spock, Kirk and Bones the best throughout the series but they didn't exactly grow. Such is the nature of episodic television.

Kirk had an arc throughout the movies and is the best character in TOS.

>Fears growing older
>Meets and loses his son
>Defies Starfleet to rescue Spock
>Comes back to face the consequences
>Overcomes his prejudice with Klingons

Most of the crew had zero development. To this day I couldn't tell you much at all about Uhura, Sulu, Scotty or Chekov. We just liked them because they were familiar and the actors were good.
>>
>>79606745
The series certainly didn't but Kirk got a fair bit in the movies.
>>
>>79602847
I liked that she challenged Data and could be kind of shitty to him sometimes. Everyone else babied him a little too much but I also get that it was too similar to the Bones/Spock dynamic.

Crusher is fine but pretty bland. She doesn't change or do much throughout the series. OK, Picards kind of in love with her. She's Wesleys mother. There are a couple good episodes with her, the one where she's trapped in a shrinking pocket universe comes to mind. But mostly she's just there to fill her role. They needed a doctor. Shrug.
>>
>>79602938
Sisko changes a lot. Overcoming his wifes death, learning to enjoy his assignment, the challenges of fatherhood and intergalactic diplomacy, discovering how far he'll go to justify winning the war (I can live with it) and even accepting his role as the Emissary.

Ok maybe that last one was kind of dumb but consider this

>Odo learning to be less rigid and more outwardly caring. Not to mention being pulled between his people and his friends.
>O'brien going from hating Bashir to being best bros
>Rom going from being Quarks whipping boy to becoming his own man, rejecting his culture, training in a new field and starting a family
>>
>>79603182
I forgot about Kira learning that by categorizing all Cardassians as evil, she was no better than them. In the final season she even helps them with their coup against the Dominion. Never forgetting but learning to overcome her prejudice against all Cardassians for the actions of the Cardassian regime.

>>79603367
Odo was learning and changing pretty early. I'm thinking of that episode with Lwaxana where he becomes comfortable losing form in front of someone. And wasn't it only season 2 or 3 that he met his people and realised they were the Dominion and began the arc of him rejecting his people?
>>
>>79603944
I'm appreciating it more now, since Crusher had so few interesting relationships. She was just the ships Doctor.

She was also Picards unrequited love interest and Wesleys mother but... meh.

If Pulaski had actually had a contemptuous relationship with data like Bones did with Spock, that would have been horrible but I liked Data/Pulaski's interractions.

She didn't baby him and sometimes challenged his nature. Even insisting that he at times was feeling emotions whereas everyone else just assumed he wasn't because he was artificial.

She teased him but was never a bully. Could have been interesting.

I'm the lone one here but not because she hated Data but that their exchanges never gave us dialogue where the two were in a passive aggressive banter session because that's rarely in Data's character. So it turned her into an unprovoked cunt without real cause towards him.

She also seemed to have a sort of Crusher/one-note way of acting that felt a bit stuffy. I can't think of any particular moment right now but she just felt like she was always embracing the same emotive chord and just carefully bending the whammy bar at times.

I liked her interactions with Worf the most.

STO is cool for canon's sake but I personally hate the tiny button layout. It adheres to most of the series quite well so I'd say fans will enjoy it more than non-fans.

Has anyone played the Star Trek game from 1971?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(text_game)
>The game was non-graphical and was played out visually by printing each successive screen following each player command. On early machines this was printed to a printer, which resulted in a lot of paper being used.

Disneyfags hate the Thrawn trilogy.
But what I meant is that it's similar in that it shakes up the whole universe and changes status quo forever, and also isn't canon

So I'm watching DS9 for the second time. On the last season and Ezri is taking about "getting her pronouns correct" and stuff.
Were the Trills like trying to address gender politics 20 years early?

Also, Ezri kinda sucks in comparison to Jadzia, but she's pretty cute. Especially her Mirror Universe self. Hubba hubba.

It was fun, but I wasn't that much into Star Trek back then, shit wasn't as readily accessible as it is today, internet or not.

I have been a computer hobbyist since the 80s but only learned of the 70s Star Trek game recently. I've played Netrek but not this one.

Apparently it's the first roguelike. I learned this from Reddit.com, a site which features news and opinions.

The best ever Star Trek-like game was Starflight. Star Control was pretty good too.
>>
>>79601558
Season 1 has a lot of TOS reboot shit shoehorned into the TNG, Season 2 is largely a train wreck because of the writers strike. 3 is when it hits its stride. I didn't care for a lot of 6 and 7th season episodes, myself. You can tell they've run out of ideas.

I'm fairly certain they knew Jadzia was going to die by the time her and Worf started trying to have a baby, for added drama. Who knows if they would have gone that route if Terry Farrell hadn't asked to leave.

What I want to know is, how would the Next gen movies have handled it if Worf was still married to Jadzia and possibly had a mixed baby. probably would have just ignored it or written around it like they did with Worfs ambassadorship.

"She was not fired." - Rick Berman
>>
>>79613702
>What should they have done besides having him become a Pah Wraith?
They shouldn't have turned him into a goddamn genocidal cartoon nazi cum Space Satan in the first place; the only reason they did so was because (((Ira Behr))) was u shittershattered that the fans of the show unironically liked and sympathized with a nazi allegory more than most of the "good guys". Dukat's story should have ended with him waking up in the rubble of Cardassia after fighting to take it back, seeing what his megalomania wrought upon the people he loved so dearly and forsaking his identity to become a faceless wanderer. The weight of hundreds of millions of Cardassian dead should have been what finally broke him as a person.
>>
>>79613707

>You can't be in a situation on our shows where somebody is just going to do seven out of thirteen.

What a load of shit. There have been plenty of Trek episodes where not everyone appeared or had next to zero screentime. I'm rewatching DS9 now and O'Brien was gone for like three straight episodes. There was another where Kira had about a minute of screentime. Same thing happened plenty of times on TNG. Berman's an asshole.
>>
>>79613748
Was she even asking to be downgraded from Regular to recurring? Sounds like she just wanted less episodes focused on Jadzia.

And Berman could have told her no, you're a regular cast member, people would wonder why you weren't in episodes and you'd be retroactively cutting down Michael Dorn's episodes as well since his character is married to yours and it would be weird having him show up more than you.

DS9 is a business with dozens of part-time employees. She could have been downgraded from full-time to part-time.

That's called an out. He knew she wouldn't accept the terms offered. Wow, you know nothing about firing people.
>>
>>79614297
>So he should have been in Damar's place?
No. He should have been scorned as a traitor but gone to Cardassia to fight anyway - with the full expectation that he would be held accountable for his actions after the dust settled - but then died in the effort for all intents and purposes (complete with disfiguring injuries) and spent the rest of his life wandering the planet anonymously and aiding the rebuilding because he didn't have the strength of character to kill himself.
>>
>>79614508
>He knew she wouldn't accept the terms offered.
Exactly, that's called quitting.

He offered her current job, exactly the same as before, without any changes. That's not firing. I can see that you know nothing about business but you like to shitpost on the internet as if you do whenever you get bored and see a thread that's about to 404 so not many people will be around to call you out on your bullshit.

Yep. A million times better than the stupid bullshit that actually happened. He went from being a charismatic nazi with a trollish streak to being an unhinged genocidal maniac to being a comic book villain and then died to shitty special effects. Dukat's story line even managed to drag down Sisko, and dragging down other characters by association is the marker of truly god-awful character writing.
