I think this shows that the main reason for any work of fiction to be considered as art is the potential for various interpretations.

There are these painting like frames which may not have a "correct" explanation but instead makes you think or feel something different.

I watched Evangelion a long time ago before I knew of the hype surrounding it. It was okay in my opinion, though I didn't like the latter episodes all that much since they didn't make much sense to me and I didn't appreciate the multiple attempts at creating a proper/good ending for it.

However I do admit I find it interesting and whenever I see people talk about it I feel like I want to learn more about it.

Is there something I can read that it going to help me understand it? Whether that's some sort of community wiki with facts that are generally regarded to be true by the community or an in depth summary of the plot?

As someone who has only seen the original series and associated films they produced to end it there are elements of the plot (such as Kaworu) that seemed minor yet get such a huge amount of discussion that I'm endlessly confused.

Very little behaviour in Eva could be considered human. Everyone has their own agenda despite fighting a global threat from something beyond most peoples understanding. The tactics employed by Shinji and the rest of the characters are bizarre to say the least. Their reactions are constantly confusing as though they are reacting to something else entirely and not the massive supernatural beings intent on destroying everything they know and understand.

Actual human beings, given the resources seen in Eva, would most likely be able to assemble a defence and strategy that would have eliminated the threat within a week.

In the series Shinji is portrayed as a completely broken individual, but if that's the case then given the enormous importance of his role why wasn't any support given to him?

Shinji should have been kept in a high security facility given the worlds best education and a rigorous training regime. Instead he's assigned a spare bedroom in a shitty apartment in a shitty apartment complex and partially cared for by an alcoholic thirty-something women.

He should have had doctors helping him through his trouble and shaping him into the pilot the world needed. Instead he was kept in an emotionally unstable condition and frequently became unable to perform his job. Even when he did fight you could argue that had he been better cared for/trained he would have been much better.

The same went for all the pilots. Their lives, mental state and support structure didn't make a lick of sense given what they were doing. It's one reason why people have such a hard time understanding the story.

The school they went to was tailored for the potential pilots of evas

Then why is she so upset when 3rd Impact forces her to reveal that one side of her nature that she has hidden from Shinji?

It has a positive effect on the tone and atmosphere of the show and reinforces the idea of a higher, omnipotent force that the characters are ultimately powerless in the face of. Not saying that's what Anno intended, but the imagery definitely evoked that atmosphere for me and certainly worked in the shows favour. Not every symbol has to have implicit meaning, they can simpy reinforce a feeling.

This is such bullshit every time. There are kids and teenagers being recruited every day into guerrillas around the world and their brains have to adapt to their environment. Shinji had extensive military training and fought a whole bunch of giant monsters, he learned how to team up and handle stressful situations, finding solutions. And yet after all of this EoE comes around and Shinji is back to being a useless whiny cunt in square one managing to get the only character who made any actual progress (because she had a vision while being in vegetable state) in the show killed.
If you want to say that it was all part of Gendo's master plan for things to happen exactly how they did, alright, but the characters are garbage and really Anno's idea of compelling characters was "daddy issues".

I have a few questions about the show that I never understood.

The angels are not allowed to "touch" Adam because it will trigger the Third Impact. So all this time the angels are trying to attack the Tokyo III underground city because they believe Adam is there. At some point the twist is that Adam isn't there and the angels are making a mistake. The angel that's trap there is Lillith.

So the point of Nerv is to prevent the angels from making contact with Adam. The one angel that really knew of Adam's location was the one in the water. He was attacking the fleet because he knew Adam was going to be there.

What I don't understand is how Seele has Adam, wants to use Adam for "instrumentality" but in the end doesn't that still mean to cause the Third Impact (which they're trying to prevent in the first place through Nerv)?

So a few other questions:

1. Can the angels touch Lillith?
2. Can the angels be touched by Evangelion?
3. Can the Evangelion touch Lillith?

I know when the Eva unit was going to retrieve the lance everyone didn't want to because they feared it would trigger the Third Impact. Now is this because they believe that Lillith is Adam? But in reality the angel could touch Lillith with no repercussion?

Seele wants to trigger the third impact, but it's pointless if the vessel containing the soul of adam doesn't do exactly what they want, hence they send Kaworu, the final angel into terminal dogma to trigger it.

I think you're confused because you think the Third Impact = Instrumentality. This is not the case. The third impact is referring simply to the creation of a godlike entity from the joining of Adam and Lillith. It does not automatically mean instrumentallity will happen. Remember, The Second Impact evidently didn't cause instrumentality, and God-Rei from the Third Impact allows Shinji the choice of worldwide human instrumentality.
