and thats the problem. it was great during early 00s work, but by the time adult swim picked him up he had no jokes left, and then he made 7 years worth of garbage over 2 shows that literally nobody watched, and didnt even develop a cult following to defend as funny. its the same fate most "talents" face. They spend their entire lives creating and honing a collection of material, whether it be a movie, an album, a joke set, or just some funny animations. and after that, they get hired as professional funny-men, and all of a sudden they have to recreate a life time of material annually. heres brad neelys deal: the dude isnt naturally funny or talented. over the course of 30 years he developed a handulf of funny songs. but he has 0 ability as a writer or comedian outside of that. he needs to get a technical degree or something because his experience in media is over.

Big fan of his professor brothers & baby cakes series. They were very creatively pure. Just one man making stuff he thought he was funny in his own unique style. Even the pilot for China, IL was good, it was way more similar to his individual output than the show ended up being. Despite being irreverent and silly there was still an occasional deft touch of sentimentality in his work that never showed up in the series. The Baby Cakes series had numerous poignant little moments that made the character endearing, like he could be a real human being, whereas in the show he's just a loud retard.

I think to some degree >>79585820 is right. Neely clearly wasn't able to take control of his adult swim show and infuse it with the same qualities that made his earlier work worthwhile. Obviously there's a degree of compromise when you're shifting from being in total creative control and working outside of a regimented TV format to creating something for a network with producers & co-writers & deadlines.

I don't know how much of China, IL's lamentable fate was due to corporate interference or simply Neely's inability to translate his characters into a regular TV format but whatever the case it's disappointing to see what happened.

China was fine, but flawed in comparison to Neely's earlier works. It was Neely's debut for television; thus, some rockiness is permitted. The truest complaint - an almost universal one - is about the existence of Sclopio Peepio. There is nothing to justify its content nor ground upon which it might stand, and it comes as shocking to most that the Neely of former accomplishment would intentionally declare greater value in it than in continuing China or pursuing independent creative works.
