It got changed because it is considered redundant, as I said. Adding an extra word for no reason just makes it roll off the tongue worse. It's also greatly shunned by writers of higher calibre as it's seen as padding by them.

In short, it is no longer acceptable, especially when you saying "off" "on" or "from" is just as fine. Imagine how many days you lose throughout your life by saying 'off of' instead of 'off'.

It just irritates me. What irritates me more is when a show switches between the two for no fucking reason.
