The first one was all edgy and artsy. When it came out, it was one of the first movies to have geek reference and "Lmao weed" humor and "regular people" as it's heroes. It was also known for starting a connected cinematic universe.
By the time Clerks II came out, that kind of thing had been done to death. C2 was a much more straightforward comedy film, and people missed the edge of Smith's original work. Honestly, Clerks 2 has some funny fucking scenes, but it lacks the B&W arthouse cred of the first one.
