Al deeply loves his family (shown throughout the series) and is in a constant state of self loathing that he never went beyond a Minimum Wage job. Marcy and Steve (and later Jefferson) were the counter foil, a rich couple who don't have to worry much as they have no parental responsibilities.

Al Bundy is a tragic hero, he'll always be sad and defeated but he tries his best to be a good Dad despite his family ultimately treating him like shit for his shortcomings. Note how good of a Dad Al is, after work he's almost always back home and there to help his Wife and Kids. He's very selfless.
