Scifi guns are extremely easy to design because they don't actually need to make sense from a gunsmithing perspective. Hire the right team and you'll have a concept, cast and a miniature in under a day.
I'm not saying every movie needs unique guns but seriously? Sub machine guns on a spaceship? Not a riot gun with rubber bullets, or some kind of stungun?
It's fucking stupid, and it's terrible writing.

The Alien franchise died with Aliens. Mass market 80s quipfest that completely destroyed the presence and threat of the Alien. Alien3 was a mess, Resurrection also happened, Prometheus was an absolute pile of shit that introduced awful worldbuilding that never needed to exist, Covenant will be an empty neo-nostalgiafest.
